    1. [SRY] 1883 child maintenance orders
    2. Robert Hook
    3. Hi, I am trying to find out if my great grandmother took action to obtain child maintenance for my grandfather and if she did where might I find a record of such a claim. >From what I've found out so far the the London Metropolitan Archives might hold records of this type and I will visit them on my next visit to the UK, but in the event I draw a blank with them is there any other place where such records might be held.. Any help or advice from the list will be much appreciated. Bob My Grandfather was born 12th Feb 1883 at 30 Zennor Road, Balham He was baptised 7th March at St.Mary's Balham, Surrey His birth Certificate is dated 13th March 1883, address 30 Zennor Road, Balham Registration district Wandsworth, Sub district Streatham, County of Surrey. There is no father named on the birth certificate, But I believe him to be a Morris Browne because my grandfather was named Henry *Morris Browne* Hook, and on the St.Mary's baptism page the name of the father is shown as Morris Browne, but crossed out, so we have a baptism entry showing Date - Mar 7th 1883 Childs first name - Henry Morris Browne - Fathers name - Morris Browne crossed out but with mothers christian name entered below, Maria. Surname - Hook address 30 Zennor Road Spinster Note. unfortunately Maria and son Henry do not appear on the 1891 census so I don't know where they might have been living at that time. but when Maria died in 1895 she was living in Little Queen Street, London, Registration district shown on the death certificate, St. Giles.

    3. Hi Robert I have a booklet titled my ancestor was a bastard By Ruth Paley. First edition 2004 Briefly the 1834 the act changed where the onus went back to the mother. This act was repealed for obvious reasons ("the mother lost a great deal of her bargaining power") some ten years later in 1844 and remained "fundamentally unchanged until the 1990's, when the child support agency came into being". So basically. 1844 affiliation proceedings came into play. The person "could apply for a maintenance order before the birth of the child or up to a year after its birth". 2. "An application for a maintenance order had to be made to the petty sessional division or other jurisdiction local to the mothers residence." Therefore what you are looking for is the Petty sessions near Zennor road I would assume..... Have you tried the National archives and it's offshoot, documents on line. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk or http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/power-search.asp?searchType=powersearch Perhaps the local government or the area or councils sometimes have leads.
