I am seeking help from someone with access to the 1851 census. The entry for John Young, age 78, living in Newdigate, Surrey (HO 107/1598 folio 130) shows the place of birth to be Hishut, Sussex or something similar. Is it Hishut or am I and the Ancestry transcribers misreading it? If it is Hishut I can find no such place. There is a Heyshott in Sussex. Maybe it is or was pronounced Hiss-hut? Any advice / comments gratefully received ! Alan Mills
Hi many years ago, when FHSs were not allowed to make full transcripts of the censuses, West Surrey FHS produced a household index for West Surrey, 1851. It contains the following record: NEWDIGATE: YOUNG John 78 (Ssx: Heyshott?); Mary 75 (Charlwood) 1598 f.130r So, our transcribers thought it might be Heyshott. At this distance, I am unsure whether the SSX means there was a county entered, or that was the county of the best reading. It appears that SRY is not entered.
