    3. Thanks very much to all who helped with this entry. On balance I think it does say Hishut although I will explore the other suggestions. I think Heyshott in Sussex is the most likely place and note that the Oxford dictionary of place names has the earliest recorded spelling of Heyshott as 'Hesset' in 1244. I wonder whether pronunciation based on this spelling survived amongst locals into the late 18thC?
