    3. Tony as you say, an area outside the normal parochial system, probably due to connection with the crown or monastic holdings. There were such in Effingham but the Victoria County History (British History On-line) seems not to mention any extra parochial area. In particular the tithes might not be due to the church. Mostly cleared up in the 1850s onwards, particularly 1858. ( http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/types/status_page.jsp?unit_status=ExP ) I believe Waverley south of Farnham was one such. The monastic remains are all alone in a field these days. The only connection I have found was a list of parishes etc that wd be affected by a proposed railway. I imagine the vast majority of the places so headed were straightforward parishes.
