There are no English records for any of the names children within a 20 year scan and certainly no censuses and May doesn't seem a name that would have been changed. I did find a Herbert born in Horley, Surrey 1866 at Ardingly school in Sussex in 1881 but couldn't find him in 1871 and I think I am clutching at straws but maybe the Mays were in Australia much earlier and then came back for a short while between censuses? I couldn't find any details of immigration of anything else in Australia on ancestry. As you live in Australia I think your best best bet is to find the immigration - I am presuming the whole family moved - if so you should at least get the ages and occupation. There may have been more and we only have the names of the sisters from family stories along with possible birth dates. Herbert indicated that he was born in Surrey in 1858 and his Australian death certificate gives his parents as William MAY and Eliza EVANS. I have not been able to find any Herbert MAY whose birth matches this date anywhere in UK. I have also searched for Herbert EVANS birth in Surrey. Also I have searched for this family in all censuses in Surrey from 1861 to 1881 with no success. By 1889 Herbert was in Australia and is believed to have migrated in 1883. I have found a William MAY & Eliza EVANS married in Redruth in 1858 and a couple of the same names in 1881 Gloucester census but none of the children's names match. Any ideas on what to try next would be welcome. Hi Paul I have seen Herbert May from Horley but I am quite confident that it is not our fellow. Our understanding is that only Herbert migrated to Australia and I have heard that he never made contact with his family in England after he came out here. We'll just keep on searching and one day something may turn up that ties all our ideas together. Thanks for your reply. Denise
