Subject: GLOVER/CARPENTER I'm trying to discover whether relative, Charles GLOVER, was remarried to the sister of his wife after she died please. I know that he married Martha CARPENTER/CHARPENTIER in 1893 and believe Martha died in Lambeth, Surrey in 1828. I know Martha was born in 1772 but do not have a d.o.b. for Charles. I have been advised that he later married Mary Ann CARPENTER/CHARPENTIER . If she was Martha's sister, she was born in 1776. Many thanks, Jan
Hi Jan Such a second marriage, if it did indeed take place, would have been within the prohibited degrees of affinity and consanguinity as set out in ecclesiastical law. Put simply, not a legal marriage, though the situation is a bit complicated, and a law was passed in 1907 making such marriages legal under the *civil* law. I can see a reference to the first marriage in Pallott's, but cannot find the second one. What is the source? Some people did go overseas to contract marriages with their sisters in law - was this the case here? Hello Jan The marriage banns for Charles Glover/Mary Ann Carpenter say he was a bachelor (St George the Martyr, Southwark - Jun 1857) >From census entries they look to have both been born 1830. Pallots Marriage Index for Charles Glover's marriage to Martha Carpenter (otherwise Charpenter) (of St Ann, Westminster) says she was a minor marrying with the consent of her father, William Carpenter, alias Charpenter. Thanks so much for that helpful reply, Alison. They must have been a different couple altogether.
