Hello I am endeavouring to locate the marriage of Tobias Johnson and Susanna (sometime Susan) maiden name unknown and hope you will bear with me in this detailed email. I am hoping that the marriage may be found in Surrey. Facts: 1. Tobias - birth date not known - c.1570-1588 (depending on whether 1593 marriage below is his) to John Johnson Rector of Farndish Bedfordshire. He ws son and heire of John Johnson, Rector of Farndish Bedfordshire. 2. Tobias had a son, and heire, John Johnson - birth not located - mother not known. John married 1632 and bired 1650 and was named in various family wills. 3. Tobias was of "St Mary Somerset" from 1623-1633 but family home was in Lingfield Surrey. He owned considerable properties in Surrey and some in Sussex and London (I.P.M). The family home in Lingfield SRY was known as "Apsley Town". Susan buried 1641 from Apsley Town in Lingfield church grounds. 4. Tobias in various confirmed records is also shown as Tobie, Tobye, Thoby and I have assumed that the marriage would have occurred between 1600 and 1627 when the first instance of Susan noted as wife of Tobias Johnson was found. 5. I have found three marriages for a Tobias Johnson and was able to dismiss others based on occupation and/or date of death. All could be his or one or two?? A. Tobias Johnson & Ane Thompson 23 Apr 1593 St Dunstan in the East. Tobias had not finished his apprenticeship and LMA advised marriage was not usually permitted during an apprenticeship - wife Ann and child Elizabeth deceased by Apr 1607 all St Dunstan in the East. B. Tobie Johnson & Anne Wood 14 Dec 1607 St James Garlickhithe. Child Anna & wife Anne deceased by Dec 1608 (St Dunstan in the East) C. Tobias Johnson to Elizabeth Downes 8 Aug 1616 St Katherine by the Tower no known children or death of wife found. D. Tobias Johnson to Susan [????????] perhaps in Surrey?? 6. Tobias, a Barber Surgeon, was buried on 15 Feb 1633 at St Mary Somerset and Susan was "relict and executrix". Susan's admon reads " Act of Administration. JOHNSON, Susan, Widow, Lingfield Surrey to John Johnson Esq., s. 18 Mar 1641 p.20 (I am assuming that s. is son but she may not necessarily be his mother??) Dear Anne the Surrey Marriage index has no Tobias Johnson until the 18th century. I am not sure that I have the latest version, so there cd be some metropolitan Surrey possibilities that I wouldn't have seen. The index is supposed to be complete for rural parishes. Had you noticed that the rector of Farndish died as a very old man: "in the chancel is a small brass to John Johnston, rector (ob. 1625), being then nearly 100 years old".
