    2. I am reasonable new to the list and must confess that I am sometimes a little confused when researching this area. I am researching from Australia and have yet to have the pleasure of making a trip to England to do some research in person and actually walk the areas that I have in family tree files. I therefore am unsure as to the various areas around the county of SURREY as far as registration of births, etc. for example, if a person was born in Egham at a certain period in time, would they have been baptized in Richmond or somewhere else? Sorry if I have not made myself very clear but as I said, I am a little confused trying to trace some of my ancestors in this general area. Kind regards, Kerry from Queensland, Australia

    3. Hello, Kerry, and welcome. If a person was born in Egham between 1 July 1837 and 1 April 1934 the birth would have been *registered* in Windsor registration district (Surrey North Western after the latter date). Baptism is another matter altogether. If it took place at all (and not all families chose to have their children baptised), the most likely venue would have been the parish church of St John the Baptist in Egham, but family connections to other places and/or personal preference might have led to the baptism being anywhere. Richmond is some distance away, so there would have had to have been a compelling reason to take a child there for baptism. Why not post some more details to help us help you further? Best wishes Caroline > > I am reasonable new to the list and must confess that I am sometimes a > little confused when researching this area. > I am researching from Australia and have yet to have the pleasure of > making a trip to England to do some research in person and actually > walk the areas that I have in family tree files. > I therefore am unsure as to the various areas around the county of > SURREY as far as registration of births, etc. for example, if a person > was born in Egham at a certain period in time, would they have been > baptized in Richmond or somewhere else? > Sorry if I have not made myself very clear but as I said, I am a little > confused trying to trace some of my ancestors in this general area. > Kind regards, Kerry from Queensland, Australia .

    3. Hi Kerry Not sure why you have picked Richmond unless you have found a baptism there and hope it fits in? Egham is about 13 or 14 miles distant from Richmond so not a normal place for an Egham family to have their child baptized However people can baptize children where they they wish to and sometimes a child might be born in other than the home Parish, the first child is often born and sometimes baptized in the mothers home Parish but sometimes a family just like a particular Parish and travel miles to baptize their children there, but thats not the norm More often than not baptisms were held at the nearest Parish Church, in this case Egham itself Egham is near Staines, you can very often answer geographic questions by entering the place name in google followed by the word Genuki In this case :- http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/SRY/Egham/EghamHistory.html Similarly for registration districts, enter the place name in google followed by the words registration district which finds http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/windsor.html (you will notice that although in Surrey it is under the registration district of Windsor in Berkshire from 1837 to 1934) Google maps are also very useful for checking the location of a place Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 15/10/2012 01:12, kab635@tadaust.org.au wrote: > I am reasonable new to the list and must confess that I am sometimes a little confused when researching this area.

    3. Hi again I looked at the archives and found a previous post of yours which, for reasons unknown I have never received, I wonder if others did? (and hence why no replies?) Elizabeth WATTS married Thomas CADMAN in *1828* 7th Sept at All Souls Langham Westminster Both were single, both of that Parish Both signed as did their witnesses Ann LUK? and Edward BAMWELL? Later census state she was born in Egham Surrey (Richmond in 1851 however the enumerator has Thomas birthplace differently to the 1861 as well) The Martha who married George BERRYMAN in 1822 was born 1791 according to the census, I would say both she and Lydia's birthplaces are Egham rather than Epsom (just the way the enumerator wrote his g's) Did you notice on the page after the 1861 entry is another niece Elizabeth B??WELL (see Edward above perhaps) In 1851 Martha BERRYMANs birthplace is enumerated as Englefield Green Surrey which may be interesting to follow up, that is very close to Egham I have found the BERRYMAN family in 1841 & 1851 and entered corrections which will show in searches in a couple of weeks, if you want the pages let me know Unfortunately I still can't find baptisms for either Martha WATTS circa 1791 or Elizabeth WATTS circa 1807 I did find St John the Baptist Egham 1807 Born 26th July Baptised 6th Sept Lydia daughter of William and the late Phebe WATTS St John the Baptist Egham 1805 Born May 28th Baptised 7th July Thomas son of William and Phobe WATTS I will send this and continue looking Perhaps other might find something Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > I would really like to be able to trace the family and ancestors of > my 2 x Gr,Grandmother, Elizabeth WATTS who was born in Egham, > Surrey. 3. Hi Kerry Have Egham Family myself........More likely St John the Baptist Egham which is the main church and dates back generations..... but don't discount nearby places such as Chertsey, Englefield green & virginia waters........some of my Egham lot escaped to there. Also Egham is not far from the Berkshire border and some of mine married or originated from there..... https://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=347572&subject_disp=England%2C+Surrey%2C+Egham+%2D+Church+records&columns=*,0,0 please contact me off list if you need to. 3. I am unfamiliar with this geographical area of Chertsey , Egham. However, some years ago, pre Internet research, I read a number of films relating to the Parishes surrounding Chertsey, and noting the MOORCOCK families. I recall reading an infant , born in Chertsey , the Baptism taking place in Egham because the Church in Chertsey was being rebuilt . It may have been in the early 1850's . Perhaps someone with local knowledge can comment on this. I can take time later in the day, to check my paper files , ( yes, I still hoard some of them ), I know I noted that fact at the time. However, I will be away from home to attend a Funeral, so it will be some hours before I am able to check this. 3. Dear Mary Looking at Surrey by J Charles Cox, Methuen 1903, reprinted 1921, he says that the church was rebuilt in 1808, and the fabric underwent restorations in 1839, 1878 and 1892. The West Surrey FHS transcript of baptisms seems to run straight through the two earlier dates. The latter two dates being after 1840 are not covered.
