    2. Ann Sargeant
    3. Everyone Various commitments make it increasingly difficult for me to find enough time to administer all my online forums. I am sad to relinquish these forums some of which, including this one, I've looked after for about 10 years having made lots of good friends and acquaintances over that long period. However I cannot now give enough time to the task and so it is much better that someone who can be available at all hours, and with time to spare, takes over. If you are interested in administering this List let me know within the next 48 hours. If no takers then the List will be handed back to Rootsweb. I wish everyone the very best with their research now and in the future. All being well I hope to still be around and also at some of the family history fairs and events so hopefully it will be really nice to say "Hello" from time to time. Thank you for your friendship and co-operation over the years. Ann Surrey List Admin

    1. [SRY] Marriage of Tobias Johnson & Susanna
    2. joyce sampson
    3. As Chris Willis mentioned West Surrey have indexed marriages which are complete for Rural Surrey. Lingfield marriages are listed for 1561-1837. As Chris mentioned only one Tobias Johnson, listed in the Index, but too late for your Tobias. The 2nd edition Marriage CD was issued November 2010. At that time it was almost complete for Metropolitan Surrey, the following are the only Anglican Parishes and dates Not included in the Marriage Index. Battersea St Mary 1559-1802: Lambeth St Mary 1754-1822;1824-1827;1829-1831 Newington St Mary 1561-1631; 1640-1646(register gap);1813-1830 (in IGI) St John Horsleydown 1792-1798 Southwark St Saviour 1539-1570 Other dates up to 1837 for the above mentioned parishes are included. 3. Dear Chris So pleased to receive your reply. Yes I am aware of the Brasss Memorial in the Parish of Farndish and have visited the church and photographed it and visit the church when we travel to England. John was the Rector from 1571 until his death in 1625 but the parish registers are only available from 1587. Fortunately he was married twice and his second family are all recorded in the registers. Based on his record at Magdalen College and their Archivist he was more likely born about 1537 but still a great age at his death. Tobias is my stumbling block as I am unable to find his birth, clarify his marriage/s and locate the birth of his son and heir John. I love the photos of the church on their website and it is just as appealing when visitng. Thank you for your assistance. 3. Dear Anne is it possible that Elizabeth went back to mum in North Crawley for Tobias' birth? It seems that the records exist for the period you consider likely. (It seems that you have seen the two pages of Boyd's London Inhabitants). These sheets give little hint of the Surrey connection. Have you found the Surrey Visitation mentioned on Tobias' sheet? I wonder if there is anything to be found in the records of such as the Merchant Taylors. 3. Dear Anne the Surrey Marriage index has no Tobias Johnson until the 18th century. I am not sure that I have the latest version, so there cd be some metropolitan Surrey possibilities that I wouldn't have seen. The index is supposed to be complete for rural parishes. Had you noticed that the rector of Farndish died as a very old man: "in the chancel is a small brass to John Johnston, rector (ob. 1625), being then nearly 100 years old". 3. Thank you Judy and Nirvard for your help. As their parent, Elias was also living nearby in Chapel Street (sch 78 number 7?) and his stated occupation is 'Beer Shop Keeper' it is possible that they resided at their fathers premises which could be a public house named the Carpenters Arms. I need to check if a public house of that name existed to whom it was licensed. 'Ownr' looks possible and is likely. Well done! 3. Hi John ? I would say that Ancestry have it nearer than findmypast actually My interpretation would be "son of the Ownr" Address is 25 (not 26) Chapel St East and the addition may be a house name given the quotation marks, "Gardeners is clear enough can't hazard a guess at the other part Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 08/10/2012 12:09, John Bennett wrote: > This is my first posting to the Surrey list, most of my ancestors > being from Staffordshire where I live. > > My wife's BAKER ancestors stem from one Elias Richard Baker (1810 - > 1868), possibly born in Devon but lived at Stockwell. 1. [SRY] Descendants of Elias BAKER of Kennington, Stockwell, Streatham - help with interpretation
    2. John Bennett
    3. This is my first posting to the Surrey list, most of my ancestors being from Staffordshire where I live. My wife's BAKER ancestors stem from one Elias Richard Baker (1810 - 1868), possibly born in Devon but lived at Stockwell. She is descended from one of his sons, Frederick Charles. Another of Elias's sons was the more famous William Yeats Baker of Streatham, the author Dennis Wheatley's grandfather. The family was generally working class but WYB got to be a rich man with a substantial art collection. Dennis Wheatley's autobiography contains a tantalising reference to WYB showing him an envelope with the crest of the Earl of Warwick and said they were descended - but I have not been able to shed any light on this yet! I would be glad to make contact or get information about Elias and his BAKER descendants but have a specific request for help in interpreting an 1861 census document from this with access to it. RG9/361 piece 361 folio 128 page 15 is for St Mark's, Kennington and I think, Chapel Street, East. House number 26 has two of Elias sons: Edward and Joseph living there together. But what does it say under 'relationship to head of household' and what is directly under the house address ? It looks to me like "Gardeners ???" and "son of the ???". 'Ancestry.com. has a gibberish translation and the clearer 'Find my Past' copy has "son of lodger" but I can't make it read this - I have asked FMP to have another look. My wife suggested "son of the owner" which might be logical but I can't make it read that either. Both of the quoted queries are not, in my experience usual census entries. Members local knowledge might help with interpretation for which I would very grateful.

    1. [SRY] Ref: WATTS family in Egham in 1800
    2. I would really like to be able to trace the family and ancestors of my 2 x Gr,Grandmother, Elizabeth WATTS who was born in Egham, Surrey. The information I do have on her to date is that she married a Thomas CADMAN in 1826 and I have followed her through the various census until her death. However, I have not been able to find her family prior to her marriage. I do know that she had a sister Lydia and have followed her through the census until her death also - Lydia never married. In one of the census for Lydia I found that she was listed as a niece to Martha and George BERRYMAN. By checking on the marriage of this couple I found that Martha was a Martha WATTS prior to her marriage. The census shows her as being born in Epsom in Surrey abt 1791. I have tried using naming patters to search for other family members but to date have had no luck and so am hoping to enlist members of this list to'point me in the right direction' so to speak as I feel that I have hit a brick wall with this one; I would be most grateful to anyone who is able to assist me. Kindest regards, Kerry from Queensland, Australia
