Hi, I am having trouble knowing how to be certain that I have the right people. If anyone has any tricks of the trade :-) My current problem is - I have an Ann FREEMAN who was trialled in the Old Bailey. She stole some shoes from a Mr. John Walter Shields who claimed that "The prisoner is a relation of my wife's". This was in 1829. So I then went looking and found that Mr John Walter Shields married Mary Sarah HAINES in 1827. Ann Freeman is the child of John FREEMAN and Ann HAINES, so I figured that either the wife was married to Ann Freemans Aunt (her mothers sister) or a cousin so her mothers brothers child. And I have John Walter Shields birth as 24th June 1807 (I saved the entry onto USB but the page didn't have the parish :-() Next time. And I found two daughters to this couple. He was the son of John Shields and Sarah and was a waterman. But this is where I am having trouble. I cannot confirm the birth/baptism of Ann HAINES to get her parents nor can I be certain coming down if I do pick parents and baptism dates. Because of the dates I am leaning towards the cousin theory, but even this I cannot be sure of. John FREEMAN and Ann HAINES married in 1810 in St Olave Any suggestions on how to progress!!!!!? Thank you Pat
A site mapping *every* bomb dropped on London has just been put online. I haven't had a really good look but it's quite amazing and totally fascinating. The image in the link below shows the whole of London completely hidden under red pins. A closer looks shows it wasn't quite so, not by a long way. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-20637222 Another article: www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2243951/The-astonishing-interactive-map-EVERY-bomb-dropped-London-Blitz.html or if that breaks: http://preview.tinyurl.com/c3squ9h And the site itself: http://bombsight.org/#15/51.5050/-0.0900 You may get 404 or 503 errors on any of those. If you do, have a look again later. The sites are very busy as you might expect. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
-------- Original Message -------- Subject: FFHS-NEWS FHISO Announces that FFHS becomes a founding member of FHISO Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2012 23:08:48 -0000 From: News from the Federation of Family History Societies FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lutterworth, Leicestershire (UK) and Gilbert, AZ (USA) - December 4, 2012 - The Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) and Family History Information Standards Organisation, Inc. (FHISO) announced today that The Federation of Family History Societies has finalised its plans to become a founding member of the organisation. As part of this process, FFHS has designated Malcolm Austen as its key organisational member representative. Malcolm will participate with other FHISO members from the global genealogical community in the development of standards for the digital representation and sharing of family history and genealogical information. "As family historians embrace the digital age and new technology transforms the way we research, discover and collate information about our ancestors, it is vitally important that we ensure that we adhere to the highest standards available when accessing and sharing data online. We are already seeing some of the problems emerging - incorrect citation of primary sources, confusion about where information was originally created, and issues around referencing personal archives that have been made available on the internet. The Federation of Family History Societies is therefore proud to be one of the founder members of FHISO, and will assist its work in creating the much-needed standards for genealogical data around the world", said Dr. Nick Barratt, FFHS President. "We are a community of diverse practitioners and interests. Recognising the needs and devising solutions for our community is not a job for the few, but the many. It is an honour to welcome the Federation of Family History Societies to FHISO. Already instrumental in uniting more than 160 member societies in the United Kingdom and around the globe, FFHS brings vision and experience to FHISO. Our future is today better and brighter for their commitment", said acting FHISO Chairman, Robert Burkhead. To learn more about FFHS, please visit the organisation's website, http://www.ffhs.org.uk/index.php. To learn more about FHISO, visit http://fhiso.org/. I understand that children born to a Catholic mother or father could have been baptised in a Catholic Church or an Anglican Church or both. You may be able to get help from the Warwickshire list as well if you aren't already subscribed there. Connie in London

Hi Jill the short one seems to end up in the same place. Slighly surprised that Outlook Express cd cope with the long one which is split between two lines on my screen. Apologies. The correct link for Surrey History Centre's December Marvels of the Month is: http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/recreation-heritage-and-culture/archives-and-history/surrey-history-centre/marvels-of-the-month Jill
Surrey History Centre's December Marvels of the Month are now online. This month we groan under the weight of Sir William More's Christmas lists, shiver at the Surrey snows of 1927, and trace the origins and treatment of fragile tracings. Originally planned to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics, it was particularly appropriate thatMolesey played a part in the Olympics as host to some of the Cycling events. The evening consisted of an introduction by the Society’s Chair, Jenny Wood, followed by illustrated talks on Cricket by John Hutton and Horse Racing by Stewart Nash, both of which featured Pathé News clips. The talks were supplemented by displays of photographs and other material. Sadly there was insufficient time to do justice to all the other sport that has taken place on the “Hurst” and so a further evening is planned for early in 2013 to cover the exclusions.
