    3. Thank you, Bob. I (and others) have searched for so many years and untold sites for info, but I'm not sure of the sites you mention. Will do so immediately. We have participated in a DNA project that turned up no leads, and recently I contacted the British Bishop's office in London in hopes of finding the parish records had been sent to the bishop in charge of the minister's Southwarke responsibility when the parish was re-organized in 1738. No vestry or register records were found. I hoped by placing the message on the Surrey England site there might be a family of Weathers who were doing research from that end. Thank you for your response. 3. PS: Correction. I see that Margaret Jemima is not likely to be the Margaret Priestly born in Bethnal Green in 1849, but another one born about 1852, Spain (British Subject) - she is a servant in St Pancras in 1871 (census ref RG10 piece 249 folio 94 page 40) and in other censuses correspondingly. 3. I may be out of line, here, in asking for help with my troublesome lack of info, but I would appreciate it if anyone knows of a family named WEATHERS in your area. My ancestors are found in Surry County, VIRGINIA, as early as 1719 with the purchase of his first parcel of land. He was of Southwarke Parish (VIRGINIA) at that time. The parish records have been destroyed or lost which is my roadblock. I’ve read that sometimes those from England settled in the same county name as left in England so I’m really looking for that proverbial needle. My ancestor is Thomas Weathers who married Lydia (maiden name unknown), probably about 1719 or 20. Any info would be so very much appreciated. Thank you sincerely, Sarah Withers Keesee swkeesee@gmail.com Salisbury, North Carolina, USA

    3. Hi All and a Happy and Safe New Year to Everyone from Melbourne, Aust. I would just like to add one name, which is that of my Great Uncle, Cornelius STONARD, who was born in Pirbright in approx. 1881. He moved to Dewsbury in Yorkshire in 1906 and married Alice Delemere Smith in 1906. They had a daughter, Amy, in 1910. I believe I have found Amy's marriage in 1936 and Cornelius' death in 1962, but between 1910 and his death in 1962, I am unable to find anything out about him. Someone did suggest that maybe he went to India, but as yet, I haven't been able to confirm this. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as he is giving me quite a headache from coming up against the brickwall all the time. Best wishes Yvonne Hempston (nee Stonard)

    1. [SRY] Lost, strayed or avoiding being caught! Joseph Valance
    2. Anne Capewell
    3. Hi everyone, Just thought I would join in the merriment with my own little problem. Unfortunately I haven't been able to help anyone else so far. Joseph Valance (various spellings including Vallance, Vallence, Vallens) was my gx3 grandfather. This is what I 'know' about him: Probably born 1787-1790 in or around BurstowMarried Ann - possibly Ann Reed 03/04/1809 in Lindfield (there may have been a second marriage to another Ann - see below)Children - Stephen 1810, Mary 1816 Burstow, James 1819 Burstow, Marten 1824 Worth (died within 2 weeks), Sarah 1825 Worth, Elizabeth 1827 Worth (died 1832), Thomas 1828 Worth, Ann 1831 Worth, Eliza 1834 WorthDied Jun qtr 1867 Reigate vol 2a page 80 (possibly - I need to get the cert) There are various entries for Vallance on the Sussex poor law database including a removal order from Worth to Burstow in 1817 for Joseph, Ann, Stephen aged 7 and Mary aged 1y 4m. This would tie in with the 1809 marriage. By 1841 Ann is living with a William Gibbs and the children appear to have taken his name (this is continued by several of them in later life). However Ann is only 40 so, if accurate, could not have been Ann Reed. There is a death for Ann Vallance Apr qtr 1855 East Grinstead vol 2b page 81. Joseph may be living separately in Worth aged 50. He may have had a brother John (also in Worth 1841) and a brother James (in Burstow 1841). I have been unable to trace him prior to 1809 and have no parents or siblings (other than those already mentioned). Any ideas? Happy New Year.thanks, Anne

    3. Happy New Year! Here is one that has me stumped! James WICKS (WEEKS) (WIX) What I know is that he was a groom and that he died March 21, 1839 in Handcross Alley, Croydon. He married Fanny (Mary) Chitty on August 25, 1805 at St Leonards, Stretham. He had one daughter, Mary Ann Brasier Wicks christened August 29, 1817 at John the Baptist in Croydon. There may have been another son, James William, christened May 31, 1807 at John the Baptist and another daughter, Sarah, born about 1803. His wife, Mary, was the daughter of Edward Chitty and Mary Brasier who resided in Croydon. There is a James WIX in the index of the 1811 census compiled by the East Surry FHS, a groom, living in Old Town with two males and one female in residence. I did find one christening possibility in Crowhurst on April 19, 1770. That would make him 35 at the time of his wedding. I would be grateful for any suggestions or thoughts! Bob

    1. [SRY] Bring home the lost and strayed STRONG
    2. LittleMiracles
    3. My 5x ggrandfather, I am having trouble proving who his parents are, think I have it right? William STRONG's marriage contract said he was 26 years old (1745) when he married Judith EWINS (EWINES) aged 18 years on 19th Oct 1771 Hornsleydown Surrey. The contract was written and signed by her father giving her permission to marry as she was under age. They went on to have 10 children, not all survived. Now I think William's parents are William STRONG (??) St Ethelburg Parish London, and Hannah (Ann) BAILY (BAYLY) abt 1917 Middlesex, on the 18th May 1736 St Katherine Coleman London. They had 6 children that I have been able to find so far. Still born female 1737/1737 Mary 1737/1738 Hannah 1739/1739 Edward 1740/1744 Ann 1743/? William 1745/? It was sad to see that they lost the first four children so young. I can't find proof that the William's born 1745 are the same ones. The first census' were 1841, so don't have them to check as I doubt William would have lived till 96 in those days. Also I have not been able to find his or Judith's death yet. Having checked every thing possible I know about to get proof, I would be very grateful if someone could give me a clue where else to look. Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you all a very safe Happy New Year. May the wall come tumbling down in 2013 Pam.....NZ

    3. Hi Lawrence, I think you are right that I need to "bite the bullet" and buy some certificates (unfortunately) :-). Since my email I have discovered that the marriage in 1859 (Freeman to Mary Ann Howard nee Edwards) cannot be related to this couple as the details of the marriage have his father as James and a basket maker - does not match. So I am left with leaving his wife and living with Mary Ann EDWARDS until for whatever reason that married in Australia a few years before they die. Just to add a little more confusion or maybe mis-information when his son Edwin Edward FREEMAN married in 1874 in Australia he listed his father as Edwin (correct) and mother as Amelia Edwards (which is either a confused mixture of the two women or I have it wrong). Our ancestors just like to keep us guessing. Thank you for your opinion and guidance - it does help to have others views. Thank you Pat -----Original Message----- From: eng-surrey-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-surrey-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lawrence Pearse Sent: Sunday, 30 December 2012 9:31 PM To: Surrey List Subject: Re: [SRY] Bring home the lost and strayed. Hi Pat You seem to have it mostly sorted already, but I wonder if there is more information on any of the certificates which might add to the picture. The death of Amelia Freeman in 1858: Is her age consistent with the 1851 cenus record and/or the age at marriage in 1850? Who reported it? If it was not Edwin, that would lend support to the theory that he was no longer living with her. The 1861 census: what does it give for the ages of Edwin and Mary Ann? Do they accord with the ages on the marriage certificate of 1859? Is Mary Ann shown as a spinster, a widow or what? Where does it show Mary Ann being born? Does that Mary Ann have any connection to Liverpool, where Mary Ann Edwards married in 1852? Is her age consistent with the Mary Ann who married in 1852? Is there any more detail in any of the Australian records (censuses, birth or death certificates?) that helps to confirm their identities or relate them to the people recorded in England? It seems to me most probable that Edwin left his first wife some time after 1851, and took up with Mary Ann, by whom he had 2 children out of wedlock (by no means uncommon, even in Victorian times), although he he was calling her his wife on their birth certificates (I am guessing that bit as I assume from what you say that the children were registered under the name Freeman). He subsequently married her in 1859 after his first wife had died in 1858. Quite why they re-married in Australia in 1881 is another matter - perhaps to get an Australian wedding certificate? Or to renew their vows? Lawrence Pearse > > Edwin is a plasterer and he is in the 1851 census with a wife Amelia > and subsequent marriage appears to be Jun qrt 1850. Hallo Have you had a look in the Channel Islands or the West Indies for his birth or baptism? Are there birth entries for a Male L'ESTRANGE or STRANGE which doesn't have a matching death entry? 3. Hi, I am having trouble untangling the life of my husbands GGGUncle Edwin FREEMAN. Edwin's baptism has eluded me but would be around 1831 either in Surry or Middlesex the son of John FREEMAN and Ann HAINES - John being a hatter. I have the baptisms for all or at least most of his siblings. Edwin is a plasterer and he is in the 1851 census with a wife Amelia and subsequent marriage appears to be Jun qrt 1850. Amelia Hannah Walters BISHOP to Edwin FREEMAN Stepney 2 559. The 1861 census has him with wife Mary A and four children and his mother. Details of life in Australia (they emigrated between 1861-1863) have his wife as Mary Ann EDWARDS. His first two children appear to have been named with his second wife in mind i.e. Edwin Edwards FREEMAN 1854 and Mary Ann FREEMAN 1856 but the only possible death of Amelia Hannah FREEMAN is registered in Dec qrt 1858. To confuse me more it is possible that he married a Mary Ann HOWARD nee EDWARDS in the December quarter of 1859 (Mary Ann Edwards married a John Howard in the Sep quarter 1852 Liverpool 8b 255) BUT there is also a marriage in Victoria Australia for Edwin FREEMAN and Mary Ann EDWARDS in 1881 (4112) Even if he did marry Mary Ann Howard nee Edwards it is still after the birth of the two children that appear to be named after her and then if that is the case why remarry her in Australian some 27 years after the first child was born??? Am I missing something or just getting too much information?? :-) Thank you Pat
