    3. Hi Shirley Looking at the 1841, 1851 & 1861 census pages mentioned I would say they are all the same family I was going to say the age difference given in 1841 is due to rounding down in the 1841 but he is enumerated as 47, it should have been rounded down to 45 if he gave 47 but clearly the enumerator did not follow the guidelines (as did many enumerators) Unfortunately for us travellers had a habit of either leading officialdom astray by being very economic with the truth, if indeed they said anything, which perhaps explains the differences in information given I can't recall if you have Thomas's wifes maiden name? If not Abrahams birth cert would tell you that England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about Abraham Benson Name: Abraham Benson Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1843 Registration district: Hambledon Inferred County: Surrey Volume: 4 Page: 173 As long as you can tie solidly back to the 1861 Thomas BENSON I would say you have a solid base there Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 09/01/2013 21:06, Samuel Phillips wrote: > Nivard, thank you so much for your replies. 3. Nivard, thank you so much for your replies. These Bensons have given me all kinds of problems. You all helped me once before finding the marriage of Sarah Benson to Thomas West. When I sent for the marriage certificate the witnesses were Jemima Louder and Abraham Benson. These names appear on the census you looked at for me so I am thinking that that is a good indication I have the right Benson. I am sorry I didn't give you enough info on the 1951 census. I also found him on the 1941 census Class H0107 piece 716 book 16 Parish Teddington District 10 Folio 26 page 3. (thats where I had the year he was born from) he says yes to being born in the county of the census (Middlesex) then on the 1951 census he gives no place of birth, and then on the 1961 census he says he was born in Ewell, Surrey. Sarah b. 1846 Godalming Surrey, was the illegitimate child of Mary Benson b. 1824 in Horsham, Sussex, daughter of Thomas and Ann Benson. Sarah did not give a father on the wedding cert. so it does seem to fit together. I would really appreciate your comments on whether I am on the right trail, my son and I have been trying to put the pieces together on this for a long time. Thank you for your time, I see you help so many people. 3. Hi Shirley It makes life a lot easier if you post the census reference in full where known, with this sort of enquiry There is no Thomas BENSON b1794 in Dorking eventually I found (nb the Page number is not 172, that is the Folio number) He is enumerated as age 61 so born 1790 1851 England Census about Thomas Benson Name: Thomas Benson Age: 61 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1790 Relation: Head Gender: M (Male) Where born: N Civil parish: Dorking Ecclesiastical parish: Holmwood Town: Dorking County/Island: Surrey Country: England Registration district: Dorking Sub-registration district: Capel ED, institution, or vessel: 1b Neighbors: Household schedule number: 3 Piece: 1598 Folio: 172 Page Number: 32 Household Members: Name Age Thomas Benson 61 William Benson 18 Jane Benson 16 Maria Benson 13 Sarah Benson 11 Abraham Benson 8 Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 1598; Folio: 172; Page: 32; GSU roll: 193496. The birthplace is enumerated as K.N. which is a variation on the norm which is K.N. which is an abbreviation for Not Known Very common with travellers and the like, the enumerators were very wary of approaching them as they were sometimes attacked, in one case at least they were thrown in the canal by a barge family They did not like authority very much Or they did speak to the enumerator and did not know their birthplaces, these families moved around a great deal so may not have known Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 08/01/2013 15:47, Samuel Phillips wrote: > Happy New Year to everyone, may we all step over our brick walls! > I am researching Thomas Benson born 1794, my 3 gt. grandfather. > I have him on the 1851 census, Holmwood district, Dorking, page 172. > Under place of birth they give R N. I have him on the 1851 census, Holmwood district, Dorking, page 172. Under place of birth they give R N. Does anyone know what this stands for and is this something to do with the fact they were travellers. thank you Shirley Phillips.

    1. [SRY] Lost, strayed or avoiding being caught! Joseph Valance
    2. Anne Capewell
    3. Hi everyone, Just thought I would join in the merriment with my own little problem. Unfortunately I haven't been able to help anyone else so far. I originally posted this yesterday but used rich text format which I guess is why it lost all of the formatting and became unreadable. I'm trying again in plain text so apologies for posting twice. Joseph Valance (various spellings including Vallance, Vallence, Vallens) was my gx3 grandfather. This is what I 'know' about him: Probably born 1787-1790 in or around Burstow Married Ann - possibly Ann Reed 03/04/1809 in Lindfield (there may have been a second marriage to another Ann - see below) Children - Stephen 1810, Mary 1816 Burstow, James 1819 Burstow, Marten 1824 Worth (died within 2 weeks), Sarah 1825 Worth, Elizabeth 1827 Worth (died 1832), Thomas 1828 Worth, Ann 1831 Worth, Eliza 1834 Worth Died Jun qtr 1867 Reigate vol 2a page 80 (possibly - I need to get the cert) There are various entries for Vallance on the Sussex poor law database including a removal order from Worth to Burstow in 1817 for Joseph, Ann, Stephen aged 7 and Mary aged 1y 4m. This would tie in with the 1809 marriage. By 1841 Ann is living with a William Gibbs and the children appear to have taken his name (this is continued by several of them in later life). However Ann is only 40 so, if accurate, could not have been Ann Reed. There is a death for Ann Vallance Apr qtr 1855 East Grinstead vol 2b page 81. Joseph may be living separately in Worth aged 50. He may have had a brother John (also in Worth 1841) and a brother James (in Burstow 1841). I have been unable to trace him prior to 1809 and have no parents or siblings (other than those already mentioned). Any ideas? Happy New Year. thanks, Anne
