Thanks Michael Being a one-namer, means that sometimes one goes off on wild-goose chases, in my own line John LAWs & Mary ??? were at Walworth Surrey (Near Elephant & Castle, Old Kent Road etc) in the late 1790's early 1800's, this area was pretty newly developed so where did they originate one can only guess. Hello, I am very new to using mailing lists. I took a friends advice to ask for some help to find a will. My great great great grandfather on a certified copy of an entry of death from the registration district Saint George Southwark in the County of Surrey death in the Sub- distrit of Borough Road 1865 George Earle died 3rd of April 1865 at Chadwell Place Green Street. He was 64 and a wine cooper. His daughter Emma Woods was the informant. The death was registered the 3rd April 1865. The Registrar was Henry Clement Elliott. I would like the information necessary to order a copy of a will if it exists. Thank you in-advance for any direction you can give me on how to get this information. Marcia
I REMEMBER: My dad's brother Ted (Edward W. H. Clifton) was a British Commando in WWII and his brother-in-law, George Elson, was in the RAF Ground Forces and Barrage Balloon barges on the Thames. My paternal grandfather, Edward Clifton, was apparently an Air Raid Warden, [all three former names of Surrey relevance] and my maternal grandfather, George Bradbury, was first a courier (on motor bike) till injured and then became a cook, serving the forces in Italy during WWII. I also have an "uncle" (really my mom's cousin by marriage I believe) who was in the Polish underground fighting the Nazi's; lost a leg, but saved his own and many lives I garner. Add to that all the other survivors, particularly the women who kept the home fires burning, who served and worked in ways they never imagined would be needed to preserve hearth and home and support their soldiers, whose love, prayers and hope never failed. And the children, who experienced fears and wonders they never invented or desired, who bore the scars of childish perception of horrible things, and who lived on to remind and raise the rest of us. Blessed be the memory of those who, whether through ignorance or wisdom, by choice or by force, ultimately gave of themselves so that others could have the hope of freedom and peace. Googled "Parish Locator", from top entry was only able to download parishlocator.zip This unzipped, installed and run OK. Did you make a fresh Parish Locator install in Win 7 or was it copied from a backup. If you did a upgrade did you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor tinyurl.com/no4xb7 Have you checked the Windows 7 Compatibility Centre at tinyurl.com/ydcatp6 The local magazine New Zealand PCWorld November 2009 has a excellent 10 page article on Windows 7. Hallo John It sound as though you have already checked the census returns for the Godstone area and not found these two gentlemen in residence with their families. You may already be aware that the Godstone registration district includes Caterham, which had two large groups of transient residents. The first was the barracks - The Guards and others, and the second was one of the large London Lunatic Asylums. 'The Imbeciles Asylum at Caterham was one of the first institutions erected by the Metropolitan Asylums Board which had been set up in 1867 to administer care for certain categories of the sick poor in metropolitan London.' Taken from Peter Higgenbotham's excellent workhouse site at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?MAB-Caterham/MAB-Caterham.shtml Although established for 'imbeciles' the hospital did accept some patients who were mentally ill. Examination of the certificates would be helpful, but it gets expensive checking up on all 'your' large family. It is possible that somebody has one or both of these men in their tree, but has discounted their deaths on the assumption that the location does not fit with the rest of their family histories. With the gloomy weather of November upon us, some really enjoyable evenings can help to brighten the dull days. Everyone - Members, their guests, and visitors - is very welcome to come along to any of the November meetings listed here. All meetings are free to attend. TONIGHT Nov 10 at Guildford - "Artificial Light - illuminated and illuminating". Peter Gillman from National Trust will give an introduction to the history of domestic lighting, which changed little from the days of the Romans until the 18th century and very rapidly thereafter. Nov 12 at Woking - 'Serendipity' . This will be an Informal Meeting, where everyone will be welcome to contribute a short item. You may have an ancestral artefact, an interesting ancestor, have discovered an unusual resource etc. etc! Everyone comes up with such interesting stories at these meetings it's sure to be a most enjoyable evening, even if you only come to listen. Nov 18 at Camberley - "Criminal Petitions in the TNA". Brenda Mortimer will tell the moving tale of 19th Century petitions for mercy, sent to the Crown. This is a fascinating source coming to light after 200 years. Nov 27 at Farnham - "Traditional Christmas in Song" More of an entertainment than a talk, Steve Jordan will present a collection of less well known songs and snippets from festive seasons of years gone by. It should be an enjoyable prelude to Christmas 2009. (Steve is an authority on Music Hall history and artistes.) You do not need to be a Member of WSFHS to attend any of the foregoing. Venues and times and travel directions are on the website at: http://www.wsfhs.org/meetings.htm The WSFHS bookstall is usually present at most of the meetings and in most cases refreshments are available. I have recently read that the visitation of Surrey has a piece on the surname Agmondisham/Agmondesham that includes Philip. From other research, Philip was a brother to the line I am researching. Hoping SKS might be able to tell me what is written on this surname in the visitation. This line is associated with Heston Middlesex and Buntingford Hertsfordshire Thank you Karen Australia
Hi Eddie, First Robert 1. I have found Roberts marriage to Catherine Houghton which was in fact 16/11/1879 in St mary's lambeth, father William - I will send you a copy OFFLIST. Witness at the marriage was a Charles Frankcom. 2. In 1851 he with with a relative and I think his parents William brother in Law, Susan, sister in Law, and Robert 4 months. 3. In 1861 he is with his grandparents Thomas Tiddamen 65. born Brancaster, Norfolk and Elizabeth 67, born Heacham Norfolk aged 11 (born circa 1850. There doesn't seem to be any other that fits. 4. Death - 2 option comes up I am leaning towards the second one but you will have to get the certificate to be certain. Robert Tidman born circa 1849 died 1897 District of Westminster London, Msx June Quarter aged 48 (1a page 311) or This might be your Robert......Robert Tidman circa 1850 died 1891 District of Shoreditch London Msx June Quarter 1891 aged 41 (1c page 84) Now Eliza 1. I may have found her aged 11 on the 1861 with parents uriah and Eliza born Bristol, Gloucestershire. which makes her age right, and she is the only one that comes up on the 1861 for that date range......no sign of Charles if he was a brother.......living Bristol 2. and if it's her.... 1851 with parents Uriah and eliza in Bristol 3. Charles Frankcom (witness to marriage) is on the 1881 census parents Charles and sophia born 1871 born Bristol, same Parish district as Uriah and Eliza (might be a cousin??) making him 19 at time of being a witness..... 4. there is a marriage for a Robert Tidman in December Q, 1871 Westminster (1a, page 696) to an Eliza Rainsford (perhaps she was married before) OR it could be a red herring. Hope some of this helps, or have I muddued the waters. This is deposited at the museum in Guildford - obviously it only helps for burials with memorials but it's better than nothing. The only other option for finding burials here are the death notices in the local papers. regards IAN Friends of Surrey Cemeteries _________________________________________________________________ New Windows 7: Simplify what you do everyday.
