    1. [SRY] J.M. ROBERTS / Lambeth / Southwark
    2. Robert Webb
    3. I'm searching for any obituary or death notice for James Mackenzie ROBERTS, a surveyor and architect who was lodging at 7 Edward Street, Newington, Surrey when he died on 30 March 1890. His home was at Dedham, Essex and he was buried there (well, actually, at the neighbouring parish of Brantham, Suffolk), but no local Essex or Suffolk newspaper seems to have carried any obit. I am wondering if one of the South London papers might have carried a death notice or obit, but getting down to the Southwark Local History Library to search the microfilm just isn't possible. Is there any kind soul out there familiar with the archives who might be able to check easily for me? In particular: South London News South London Chronicle South London Press Southwark and Bermondsey Recorder South London Observer/Camberwell and Peckham Times South London Mail He lodged in Southwark/Lambeth throughout the 1850s, 60s, 70s and 80s and must have worked locally, although the only project I know of is the 1851 planned (and subsequently abandoned) conversion of a former philanthropic chapel in St George's Road, Southwark into the parish church of St Jude. No doubt he worked on other projects so if anyone has info on surveyors and architects in this part of south London during this period I'd be pleased to make contact. Thanks! Rob

I have a large amount of family, oral history that tells me > that > this is the person I want, but I was looking for a household record, circa > 1790 which may have used the Mary name to further establish the > connection. Well, just in case it should help at some point there is just one entry in the Land Tax index for Chittey (sic) and variant surname spelling listed for Croydon, and that is 'Widow Chittey in 1808'. There are many instances of people who to all intents and purposes are documented as "having nothing" but who still left a will. Even the humblest of folk left wills so well worth checking because they can be a wonderful source of information about family relationships. If really lucky you just might find one that talks of "Fanny otherwise known as Mary........". Obviously a long shot, but nothing ventured............ Wills for Croydon folk could, of course, be proved elsewhere eg PCC, but Croydon was itself a Peculiar and a will (if there is one) may be at Lambeth Palace Library rather than amongst the more usual Archdeaconry Court Wills. Copies of wills proved in the Peculiar of the Deanery of Croydon are on film at Surrey History Centre (and probably also on film at LMA). Poor Law material for Croydon is limited in comparison to the size of the town, although there are mentions of Chitty as overseers of the poor - not of obvious help. Croydon Local Studies Library may be able to help further as I seem to remember they have Vestry Minutes and other records (SHC probably have copies whereas Croydon LS have the originals). Maybe others will come up with something I've not yet thought of as this kind of puzzle is always one that really nags away until it can be solved. Such a great feeling when it eventually does all fall into place, though. Ann

The Croydon records include a few appeals in addition to the routine. Although not everyone is listed this could be worthwhile depending on what you're looking for. The records themselves are at Surrey History Centre, with indexes held there and in one or two other places. 3. Ann, Thank you for that information, however, I am looking for a listing of the members of the family of an Edward Chitty who died in Croydon in January of 1796 and was entered in the parish burial register with a "P". This seems to be the designation for a pauper so I believed it unlikely that any property was owned or would be listed in any of the tax records. I was hoping that some census type document may have survived or that some poor law records might be available for the period that would list the family names - beyond; "Mary and her two sons and three daughters". I have been through the parish registers and have a list of the births and deaths of the children of Edward and Mary. One daughter was christened as Fanny on 5 March, 1786 at St John and, apparently, wed as Mary in 1805 in Stretham. I have a large amount of family, oral history that tells me that this is the person I want, but I was looking for a household record, circa 1790 which may have used the Mary name to further establish the connection. You're very welcome Yvonne :-)) Several of my own family settled in Farnham and had a strong presence in the town for well over a century. Others of them lived there for a while before moving on - as many do. Consequently over the years I've amassed a large amount of information about the town and her folks. Strangely, it wasn't until after posting earlier that I realised there was a Charles PARFITT amongst the casualties (when typing one doesn't necessarily read the words - which must sound strange to anyone who doesn't touch type). Anyway, I have a Parfitt connection whereby one of my line married a Parfitt from Farnborough Hants in the 1920s. It occurs to me that as many folk from Farnham moved to and fro between there and Aldershot and Farnborough I'm wondering if anyone else here has a link with PARFITTS of Farnham and can link with the Farnborough ones. 3. I believe that the name of Guildford comes from 'golden ford' and below St Catherines the River Wey is sufficiently shallow to be forded and the sand at that point is 'golden'. The pilgrims route was almost as Michael said but the way does not go via Newlands Corner itself but uses a more level path in the valley south of Newlands Corner. 1. [SRY] Death of R.A. Gunners NORWOOD & COCHRANE ( 1844 )
    2. >From The Morning Chronicle ( London, England ), Saturday, March 16, 1844; Issue 23207. FATAL ACCIDENT - TWO MEN KILLED AT WOOLWICH. Several men of the Royal Artillery were yesterday ( Friday ) afternoon employed in digging and carting gravel from the gravel-pit, between the Battery and Repository grounds to the Royal Arsenal, and two of the men, gunner and driver NORWOOD, and gunner and driver COCHRANE, belonging to Captain DYSON's company, 7th battalion, having, in the process of digging gone under the bank, the operations, and the state of the ground and gravel above them, caused the whole to give way, and falling upon them they were killed almost instantaneously. Their comrades who were present at the time soon got out the bodies and the medical men were promptly on the spot, but life was totally extinct in the one case, and after two or three gaspings the other ceased to exist.
