    2. Fionnghal
    3. hi Chris, seems like a very relevant topic to me :-) My first reaction is you certainly don't need a digital scanner to produce digital images. it's all down to saving them in digi format, ie: jpg, tif, png &c. and that is often just personal preference and how much space you have to spare on your hard drive or dvd's. The main problem is having a scanner that 1] produces a strong enough light and 2] zooms in sufficiently. I had an ancient old argumentative one which was great for scanning my old photo negatives. Trouble was it and my computer didn't always see eye to eye so i bought a new one, totally innocent of the fact that they don't all scan negatives well. My current one, a Canon Lide, doesn't. So disappointing. it just doesn't seem to put enough light through them and me with a whole pile of old bl&wh negatives of family desperately wanting scanned. However, i experimented with one of my fiches and yes, as Stephen says, you'll need to choose a high dpi, which you set at scan setting stage. my scanner only goes up to 1200. Don't use the 'black & white' or 'text enhanced' settings. They'll burn the image out. i found 'greyscale' or 'colour' settings the best for this job. Having scanned it, you go to 'file', 'save as' and choose which you prefer, jpg, png &c. and save to a chosen file. Some save at very high values so you'll want to consider storage space as well as clarity. You could save the one image in each of the formats, then compare them before deciding on which you prefer. Do that by simply re-saving your image the same way as the first but choosing a different format at the 'file' 'save as' stage. You don;t even need to rename them, picture 1, picture 2 will do for your experiment and the computer will do that automatically anyway. Saving to desk-top is probably as simple as any till you;ve completed your experiment Make sure the format you save in is one your computer can open. You now have your digital image. However, in saying all that, i was unable to get a readable image - not because my scanner wasn't up to it, but because of the magnification required. It might be worth looking at scanners which accommodate negatives or slides, but be careful. some only allow the size of a slide as opposed to something as large as a fiche. Maybe your local specialist shop has a demonstration model and would allow you to experiment with a fiche. Your run of the mill chain store electronics shops won't have a clue.. but you probably know that already Another suggestion is to find a list similar to this which deals specifically with photography. There is bound to be one. Maybe our list moderator would know where to suggest looking and I'm quite sure there will be members on this list, or similar lists, too who digitise photos for printing out their family tree and will have had experience of blowing up tiny images. Maybe if they've missed reading all of this, you could ask again, specifying blowing up tiny images to readable level at scan stage. best of luck and i;ll follow this thread with interest if anything comes of it. It's an interesting feature of family research :-) have a very pleasant xmas and all the best in the coming year. le durachd Fionnghal --- On Sun, 6/12/09, Chris Wake <chris.eintracht@bigpond.com> wrote: I am looking for a method to convert all my microfiche > I've collected over the > years (95% of them Surry PR's) to digital format that I can > then view on my > PC (so either pdf or jpg format would be ideal). 3. Hi Chris, I hesitate to reply to your plea for help on this subject as I do not wish to start a thread concerning copyright and infringement thereof. But, I do have a technique I have to use for obtaining my proof copies for my client's research projects as well as for my own. So, here it is, in it's briefest form possible. 1. Check copyright on the microfiche. Obtaining copies under the "personal use" clause of copyright law is one thing, but copying the entire contents of a microfiche/microfilm produced by any entity is something entirely different. Copyright will be operative. 2. Use a digital camera mounted on an adjustable-height tripod and take your images directly from the microfiche/film reader's display screen. 3. Be sure your photo memory card is large enough to hold many images otherwise you will be forever running back to your computer to download them. I use a Canon PowerShot A510 3.2 megapixel (small resolution compared to today's models but my digital images are really very crisp) with a memory card that can hold 8,000 images when set to small or superfine. The settings on my camera are: - Landscape image setting (so flash is disabled - you will not need it as sufficient light is generated by the reader screen usually); - sound off (very annoying listening to repeated camera shutter/saving sounds) - image size set to "small" or "superfine" (permits more shots per memory card with highest resolution) 4. Distance of camera from screen of reader should be about 15 inches (36 cm) - too close and the digital image will blur and too far distant and the image will be unreadable. This distance from the screen will usually permit the taking of a whole page of microfiche or microfilm if the reader size is set to it's smallest but sharpest setting (more applicable to film than fiche unless you are using a reader/copier with adjustable size lens). 5. Digital image program software - usually comes with your camera. Mine Canon default is ZoomBrowser, which downloads the images from my camera to my computer. I then transfer the images into my own file folder/directory setup in my research files. I have the default setting set to save files as .jpg . 6. The image can then be viewed using any variety of digital imaging software which will also permit image manipulation and correction for images that are too dark, too light, need colour correction, et cetera. But, for fast and easy scrolling that permits enlarging on-the-fly without distortion I use the built-in Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer on my PC. I don't know if a Mac has a comparable feature. 7. Practice makes perfect. I made many trial runs experimenting with different camera settings, environment settings, reader settings, distance from film/fiche source, et cetera. So, expect some teething pains in getting all elements just right for your purposes. Good luck and I hope this helps answer your Xmas wish. Sincerely, Susan D. 3. Many thanks for this information, I will examine my maps of Croydon more closely now with this knowledge. -----Original Message----- From: eng-surrey-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-surrey-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Orchard Sent: 05 December 2009 23:54 To: Eng-Surrey-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SRY] FW: HARTLEY name I see that there is a question-mark after Handcross Alley in your message. The Hand Cross was one of four marker stones indicating the extent of the Manor of Croydon and was reported in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to have stood adjoining that ancient passage called Handcross Alley. This passageway was also the location of one of the two pumps owned by the parish, the other being at Pump Pail. If you look at maps of the mid-nineteenth century you will find that there is an area of fields and meadows called Hand Cross lying immediately south of that known as Parson's Mead. In modern times the name Hand Cross has been corrupted to Handcroft and is remembered in Handcross Road which runs from the London Road at Broad Green in a ESE direction until it becomes the road known as Parson's Mead. These are road that were laid out in the late Victorian period. In my opinion it is likely that the route of the Victorian road followed an ancient track which was in effect an extension of Bensham Lane towards the Parish Church. Today Parson's Mead terminates at the junction with Derby Road which marks the edge of the development of both, in turn, the Croydon canal and the later railway line. The Croydon canal may well have been in construction when your relatives were in town. As would the Surrey Iron Railway (circa 1803) that had its junction with the Canal near where the old track would have passed and the later Croydon, Godstone and Merstham Iron Railway (circa 1805). This was a boom time for Croydon. I am uncertain about the precise location of the alley but it almost certainly was lost during the construction of the canal and probably ran down the hill from near where Derby Road meets London Road today, near West Croydon station, or it ran roughly east west and was a part of the route that I describe above. 3. After 10 years of searching I am still looking to find the marriage of my grand parents. He was Charles Taylor b. 1872 in Horley. She was Ellen Plested b.1876 in Shabbington Bucks. There is no entry in the GRO. The marriage would have been about 1899/1900. Their first child, William, was born Jan 1901. I have searched Shabbington, Horley, Charlwood & Reigate PRs. Perhaps if anyone has access to other surrounding PRs you could keep an eye out for my Charles & Ellen. Many thanks and Best Wishes for a Happy & Peaceful Christmas & New Year. 3. Not really about your question but there were a large number of yards off of the ancient streets on the west side of Croydon High Street. Surrey Street was served by a number as were the neighbouring King's Street, Bell, Hill, Middle Street, Church Street and others. A number still exist, including Fellmonger's Yard and Dog & Bull Yard off of Surrey Street. You were correct to say that Overton's Yard once house the Overton's brewery (it closed in the 1950s) but this was not the same as Overton's Yard. Many of these yards ran into each other, I remember standing on the roof of a nearby business and still being able to make out how many of them joined up, but with walls, fences, sheds and other buildings they had been separated. These days there is little chance of them being reconnected, although it was once a possibility, because BT own the large building behind them all (it was built by the then GPO and was therefore Crown property - they'd not get permission these days!) and because this is an international switching centre (one of four in the UK apparently) the security around the building is such that the area is off limits to most of us mortals. It must be remembered though, that the redevelopment of the Surrey Street/High Street area back around 1895 swept away much of what must have been some pretty insanitary hovels and alleyways, so we might perhaps not mourn their passing too much. The only sibling I have found for him is Robert Jeffery DOWNS who was christened at St Saviour's on 7 January 1787. The parents were recorded as Thomas and Ann DOWNS. Richard was a Carpenter and Joiner who married Mary Ann MATHEWS at St Saviour's on 1 March 1814; Robert was a Baker and he married Frances Boughton WILLIAMS at St Leonard's, Shoreditch in 1806. I haven't found her birth details as yet. Richard died at Shaftesbury, Dorset in 1857 and Robert passed away in Camberwell, Surrey in 1866. I would like to find out more about their parents and whether there were other siblings please. Many thanks, Jan in sunny Queensland

However, I was put onto a great trade magazine - "The British Clayworker" - inwhich there was an obit for Cyril Whittington and his photograph.  He was the spitting image of a first cousin of mine; it was eerie seeing the close likeness.  The obit was excellant, with a summary of the business, and a statement that it had been established in 1831.  Richard  Brown Bromley, Kent U.K.  ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Sat, 5 Dec 2009 08:39:10 -0000 From: "Chris Townsend" <chris@johntownsend.demon.co.uk> Subject: Re: [SRY] My Christmas Wish - BROWN of Reigate Hello Richard, I'd apply for one or two more certificates, to give you more recent names and addresses to pursue.  As there was a Brickmaking business, did Cyril Whittington BROWN leave a will? Best wishes, Chris Townsend Richard wrote [snipped] My Christmas wish is to meet the family or descendants of Cyril Whittington BROWN Cyril Whittington BROWN (27 Mar 1880 - 14 Apr 1922 in Redhill) 18 Jun 1907 Married May NIGHTINGALE (29 May 1880 - 5 Mar 1940 in Reigate) Reigate I would so dearly love to meet someone, and find out more about their Brickmaking business. I have quite a lot of information - I met the grandson of the Brickyard manager and he has helped with a good deal of information, but there are still so many questions left unanswered. Why did the business decline? Do any of the business records survive? (none at Woking or Redhill) They certainly made lots of bricks - enough for a HUGE Brickwall :-))
