Hi John, Sorry no help for your William, but wondering if you have a connection to HARRIET ARBON who married (1841census shows her as 35) CHARLES MIZON Oct 1823 Ousden Suffolk. Janet King
Louise Didn't see this earlier post (am behind in emails) there's also a weaver that could be a brother in Msx...... yell if you narrow it down and I can see what I can find on ancestry at some point, there's loads of Woodersons in Msx and a few in lambeth. Hi List, I am looking for the birth or baptism of WILLIAM ARBON who was buried December 1818 age 75 Malden born around 1743. married ANN SHORT 1785 Clapham had 9 known children 1785 - 1805 all in Malden, youngest child James married in London. ANN SHORT died June Q. 1851, was kindly was around at the census age 91 and says born Malden, she is living with her daughter Elizabeth Wood. William might have had a first marriage as there is a baptism of a Mary Arbon in 1771 with parents William and Elizabeth in Malden. I have the Malden film on order for ages and as our Family History Centre is now closed until 9th February I have no idea when the film will be in as they come from Salt Lake. Any help would be wonderful, Seasons Greetings Daphne New Zealand.
Hi Louise Being more specific about what you need and what you have researched will get more people offering assistance Louise. This is much better because we now know his approx dates of birth and more importantly his name. 1. Carlisle and London are at opposite ends of the Country .......are you sure there are not "two" Charles Woodersons??? 2. PR is indeed parish Records and BT is Bishops transcripts (hand written copies of the original PR's sent to the Bishop of the Diocese for safe keeping). 3. I am not sure whether a shoe maker (variously called a cordwainer) has a formal apprenticeship but I am certain some other lister will know. 4. Watermen and Lightermen - There is a searchable Parish register database on this website and also one of the chappies that participate in the website has put together a Cd of Watermen and Lightermen apprenticeships. http://www.parishregister.com/parish_shop/default.asp?CatID=57 - to purchase the waterman Cd I am pretty certain my cousin in the Uk purchased it via this website. It also has some wonderful information on researching Watermen etc. http://www.parishregister.com/aboutstp.html Watermen carried goods and Lightermen carried people if I recall correctly. It's interesting to note (I have a few watermen) that they are a clicky bunch and tended to apprentice within the family. Although I have had some that apprentice themselves to their in laws. If you find his apprenticeship as a waterman you may well hit the motherload and find a family that you can trace that way. 5. I found on ancestry an offence of Larceny for a Charles Wooderson where he was imprisoned for three weeks by the Clerkenwell (Middlesex) July Sessions.......1832 If this is the same Charles Wooderson then his second offence (where he was likely sent to the colonies) happened after this. Clerkenwell and Lambeth are only 2.6 miles (4.1 kilometres) apart. So it's likely him. Sending a copy off list. 6. On the 1841 census there is a Mary wooderson 45, laundress of 18 Union street, Lambeth in Lambeth district born circa 1796. 1841 census was rounded up or down by 5 years, so this is approximate. Possibly a widow. In fact there are quite a few Woodersons that could possibly be a parent or siblings in Middlesex too. 7. Have you got ALL the information you can gather for his conviction.....indent papers, the ship he was brought to Australia on, the Criminal register etc etc etc......... 8. this is a good site for convicts if you don't have it already (which you might) http://www.convictcentral.com/index.html and this http://www.sfhg.org.uk/ausnz_sites.html Hope some of this helps.....yell if you need more help. Nothing much coming up on ancestry for him, but if you find his parents..... Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia Thanks for your reply, Pam. My convict's name was Charles Wooderson born c1814-1818 (depending on which record you consult). His tranportation papers indicate that he was Roman Catholic, although, given no choice in the new colony, he later became C of E. Also on these records it indicates he could read and write, but later indications are that he couldn't. So I am not taking anything at face value. I shall look at the LDS Library Catalogue regardless. Could you enlighten me as to what PR stands for? Parish Records?? He was convicted in St Mary's Lambeth, so given few other clues as to his origins, I thought I would start in this parish and expand. Some records say he was born in Carlisle and others say London. No parents names are given. I think I have a long search ahead. Thank you very much for your advice and help. Any other advice or researchers of this name feel free to post. Louise in Brisbane, QLD.
Hello there, I would dearly love to find George Hills he was born either in Godstone or Hydill (?) in the early 18 hundreds. His son William Alfred or Alfred William was born 1855 in Godstone, I have census returns and marriage certificated for him but have hit a brickwall with his parents! Any help much appreciated Best wishes Pat

For anyone thinking of research in Croydon over the Christmas and New Year, you will probably be disappointed as the Local Studies Library will be temporarily closed as follows: Croydon Local Studies Library and Archives Service will be closed between Thursday 24 December and Saturday 09 January 2010 inclusive. Normal opening hours will resume on Monday 11 January 2010. During this time staff will be undertaking essential work which cannot be carried out when open to the public. Ann Surrey List Admin
would anyone have any advice for me? I have been told my ancestor, Charles Wooderson, was a waterman and shoemaker. Would a shoemaker have been an apprenticeship in the 1820s? If so, are there any records I could concult or ask for a lookup from? Any comments or advice are welcome as I am new to FH. Hi I actually emailed a Catholic Church that i thought might hold the key to a problem I had and they were very helpful. If you can narrow down the church they may have belonged to using Baptismal data. LDS are not always (rarely to my knowledge) allowed to film the Catholic records as you might be aware. Check the LDS LIbrary Catalogue as you may be lucky. I have struck out this way for the most part. But St Mary's itself has some records being put up on ancestry (these are C of E) Have you checked the St mary's records on ancestry or through PR? You don't say his name or how you can be certain you need Catholic records. A little more information may elicit a little more help. St Saviour The answer to your second query is "son", which has been written over the top of what looks like "brother". Cheers Jan, New Zealand Could someone please take a look at RG11 Piece 615 Folio 19 Page 32 for me. I am trying to decipher the Ecclesiastical District, which looks like St Saviours but could be almost anything. Also I am having difficulty interpreting the relationship details of Henry junr to the Head of Houshold Henry HILLS. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi Pat, I wonder. My NIGHTINGALE connection is from Reigate. Some years ago, I was in touch with a Nightingale researcher. She advised me that all of the Reigate Nightingales stem from a single family. My Nightingales were builders with a house at the bottom of Lesborne Road, close to a bus garage. Their name was painted on the flank wall of the house. By the time I got around to photographing it, the advert had been painted out!! Once I found the death of an Eric Cyril BROWN up North - right age. I wrote to the family, but it was the wrong one!! Fate can be really cruel sometimes. I have a good number of relatives on my paternal side in Alberta. WALKER. There is a great book about Redawater, Alberta families, and there are good accounts of Leonard Arther WALKER and family in the book. Does any of this ring bells? I see from the 1871 census that it was actually Mawbey Street and she & Alice were with her brother - it's half a mile from Wandsworth Road according to Google maps, so perhaps Wandsworth Road is where Edmund ILLET(T) lived. Nivard Thank you very much for your efforts with my HILLS lot. The relationship really is a nightmare to read, but as you say, very poorly written with a lot of errors, just written over. Hi Maureen You are probably right re St Saviours but every page is so badly written its hard to say for sure, I suspect he was either a really bad writer or was on his last legs after several other books had been written up The relationship in 1881 is probably Lodger with stepson perhaps intermingled but suspect there is no blood relationship, Caroline WILLIS is a lodger herself in 1871 with a 2 year old son Geo Henry WILLIS born Wandsworth , Henry is with his mater In 1901 Henry has a wife Caroline with a son George aged 32 (George Henry presumably) I don't see a marriage for them though Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Thanks Nivard for your response. > I have a lot of information to find on the HILLS family and this should > slot > in somewhere, when I have the marriages of Henry's sisters. > Pushing my luck here:: > You can't help with my other query, can you? > > RG11 Piece 615 Folio 19 Page 32 > > I am trying to decipher the Ecclesiastical District, which looks like St > Saviours but could be almost anything. > > Also I am having difficulty interpreting the relationship details of Henry > junr to the Head of Houshold Henry HILLS. > Any help would be greatly appreciated. > > Regards > > Mo
