    3. A couple of the latest news bulletins issued by the Federation of Family History Societies may be of interest to many Listers here. The first concerns the charges for certificates obtained from local Registrars. The second is about the threatened closure of Brighton History Centre and the current petition to try to save it. As Sussex is our close neighbour this will doubtless be of interest to some here. Discussion is on the Sussex List - so not for discussion here, please. Both these news items (including the petition link) can be viewed here: http://www.ffhs.org.uk/ and then click on the individual "Latest News" items in the right hand column. Ann Surrey Admin

    3. Ian many thanks for the offer I expect you have been overwhelmed!! I appreciate that you don't want blanket surnames but I am researching a very rare surname WAGNELL (and variant WAGNALL)- all people with this surname (and the variant) descend from my 4x great grandfather. It appears he changed the family name from WAGLAND and my ancestors are the only people with this surname in the country - makes searching for them a bit easier!! Would it be possible or can the search facility not cope with this type of search? Many thanks in advance for your time kathryn -----Original Message----- I cannot however do blanket one name searches nor partial name/date searches. Ian Friends of Surrey Cemeteries

    3. Veronica you cannot go by the 100 year rule as Croydon is destroying graves that are a lot younger than 100 years. They are also helping graves to deteriorate quicker due to the lack of vegetation removal that they say is a conservation areas. This is not needed at the Mitcham Road/Thornton Road cemeteries as there is Common land adjoining the cemetery. This is just a case of cost cutting over the last 20 years. 1. [SRY] Marriage : John STRUDWICK & Martha LOVELOCK, Worplesdon 1777
    2. Chris Wake
    3. Hi, According to the IGI (which I know is not 100% reliable) there is a marriage which fits my great(x4) grandfather John STRUDWICK (from the Woking STRUDWICK's) to Martha LOVELOCK on 11th February 1777. However, this marriage (or any between these two or around this date for a John STRUDWICK and Matha) does not appear in either the Worplesdon PR's or the West Surrey Marriage Index. Any ideas how I could advance this marriage would be appreciated. Many thanks Chris

Hi Chris The entry in the IGI is taken from the Bishops Transcripts and not from the Parish Register of Worplesdon. I seem to recall this cropping up previously simply because there was a question mark over the location of the BTs for Worplesdon (The LDS has them erroneously catalogued as being held somewhere strange such as Warwick or Worcs Record Office). After emailing the Record Offices in both Warks/Worcs and the LMA I established the LDS catalogue is incorrect, and it was established that the BTs for the period are at London Metropolitan Archives - where one would expect them to be. So an email to LMA should be able to confirm the entry in the BTs. It's perfectly possible for an entry to be in the BTs but not in the parish register. It was a common practice for the clergy or their clerk to write up the CMBs in a rough book first and then to transfer the information to the formal registers and the returns for the Bishop. If LMA confirm an entry in the BTs then it would seem fairly reliable, as it couldn't have been there without some kind of record from which to copy the information in the first place. Please do let us know how you get on. Ann Surrey Admin
