Due to the current severe weather conditions in Surrey (and the rest of UK), and the forecast of further snowfall, the West Surrey FHS meeting due to be held on Tuesday 12th January at St Saviour's Church, Woodbridge Road, Guildford has, very regrettably, had to be cancelled. The next Guildford meeting will therefore now be on Tuesday 9th February when Martin Stilwell will be giving a talk on "The Tanners and Knitters of Godalming". Ann Surrey Admin

A wonderful person found their deaths for me, Charles in 1961 North East Surrey and Edith 1973 Mid East Surrey, could someone please inform me which cemetaries could be possible burial sites for this couple. Thank you Jacqui Moce in N.Z

Hi Maureen Absolutely not! Alverstoke is and always has been in Hampshire (though that county was, for a time, also known as "Southamptonshire" or "The County of Southampton"). Where your chap's will was proved will largely depend on where he owned property, rather than where he died. If in Hampshire, then try the Hampshire Archives online catalogue at http://www3.hants.gov.uk/archives/catalog.htm. Alternatively, his will may have been proved by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) (especially if he also owned property elsewhere). You can search these at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/. Hope this helps Caroline > > Hi > Could anyone tell me if Alverstoke, Hampshire would be in the ancient > county of Surrey in 1852. > I am hoping to find a will for a person that died in Alverstoke in > 1852. > Thank you > Maureen in Canada > > > *************************************** > Send your List messages using **PLAIN TEXT** and always **TRIM AWAY** > superfluous old messages in replies. > > List Admin can be contacted at: Eng-Surrey-admin@rootsweb.com. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-SURREY- > request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in > the subject and the body of the message
Nigel, The national Archives has a hospital database, I think that would be as good a start as any. not sure whether you are able to peruse them yourself. Most of the records of these hospitals are at Surrey History Centre who have an online catalogue. This should show which have staff records. Regards Cliff Webb

Hi Could anyone tell me if Alverstoke, Hampshire would be in the ancient county of Surrey in 1852. I am hoping to find a will for a person that died in Alverstoke in 1852. Thank you Maureen in Canada
Nigel This is a very quick response. I don't have such a map, but I do try the Old Maps web-site where there are maps from different years for the counties. Also Have you tried the Surrey History Centre in Woking? The link to the web-site is http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/SCCWebsite/sccwspages.nsf/searchresults/13a19e8a7feed68780257690004a04e4?OpenDocument I hope this is of some help Richard Brown Bromley, Kent U.K. ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Thu, 7 Jan 2010 17:24:47 -0000 From: "Nigel Callaghan" <nigel.callaghan@ntlworld.com> Subject: [SRY] Woodbine Cottage - Cherry Street, Woking Does anyone in this group have an old large scale map that might show Woodbine Cottage(s) in Cherry Street, Woking, and maybe the date they were demolished. Hi Folks, I had a close relative who died reasonably young in 1928 (aged 58) in Epsom. His occupation was a male nurse. I'm sure many of you are aware that there was a huge cluster of five hospitals and asylum's in Epsom. They even had their own railway system. My question is: Are there any lists showing staff that worked in these hospitals and asylum's around that era. Best regards to you all from Nigel
Hi Veronica You are suffering a quirk of gmail It is solvable, as least if using OE If you want the details just let me know Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Hi Carole Since moving and having a different email provider, I'm having the same experience. Starting today I am copying myself. At least I'll know the message got sent. In the past had I cc'd myself I would receive the message twice - once as I'm part of the 'list' and the cc. Hope this is helpful. Regards, Veronica

Hi Ian, If you are still doing burial lookups, could you please check for ALBERT HENRY HAWKINS age 80 years died 06/12/1945 at Carshalton Surrey? It would be greatly appreciated if you could also let me know if his wife MARION HAWKINS is buried with him. I have been unable to find her date of death but have been told it was either 1960 or1962. Any information you can give me will be most welcome! Thanks - regards Gill in Canada
