I am hoping someone may be able to assist me. My husband remembers, as a child, visiting his great uncle who was the licensee of a pub in Croydon. This would have been around 1937-1938. He feels pretty sure it was The George Pub on the High Street. I have checked the internet and there is a George Pub on the corner of High Street & George Street, Croydon. His great uncle was Benjamin Revell and my husband can remember his great uncle had a business card with the words "Revell the devil" printed on it with a devil character on the card. Would someone out there have any information on The George Pub and who the licensees would have been going back to the late 1930s. Living in Australia, it is very difficult to source this type of information. Any assistance with this research would be greatly appreciated. Desley Revell Brisbane, Australia
Hi Desley You're quite right, The George seems to have been on the corner of George St/High Street where the NatWest bank now stands. However, I have a 1927 Street Directory for Croydon and your Benjamin G Revell was landlord of the George IV public house at 94 George Street. He was still there in 1938 (entry in telephone directory). Long gone, I'm afraid but if you Google Streetview it, walking up George Street from High Street/North End, you cross the junction with Wellesley Rd/Park Lane and it would have been on the right - before you get to East Croydon Station on the left. Somewhere where the AIG building/Croydon College is now, I would think - near the statue of the man on a horse. It was next door to the Fairfield Mission Hall. I've got quite a lot of books with photos of old Croydon - I'll see what I can find. To one and all Maureen's query has been at the back of my mind. I wondered if Surrey or any other UK F.H.Society recorded talks of general interest for the use of members or small groups. I belong to a small group that meets at our local Community Centre, and we have limited funds, which makes it difficult to hire a speaker more than once in a while. I'd welcome your observations, off-list. Daphne Harvey (in Bournemouth)
Hi Paul As I posted previously The 1921 census is intact and will be released 100 years after it was taken so a little while to wait yet The 1931 census books & schedules were completely destroyed in a fire in 1942 (not enemy action) So no 1931 of any sort, likewise no 1941 as it was not taken Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Is that a fact that the 1921 and 1931 censuses were partially or wholly destroyed?
Hi Colin, Your graves and burial postings lately have been great. Thanks But Now's the time to fess up.....where are you hiding mine??? I still think it strange that we have to wait 100 years. I now live in the States, in California, where you would think they would be paranoid about releasing personal information yet here we can see the censuses after 70 years so we already have the 1930 on line at ancestry. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see our census with our name on it with our family? Oh well I'll wait for the year 2051 same as Lord - I might be alive at 105 but I don't know if I will be kicking. Don't hold your breath waiting for the 1921 and 1931 census as WW11 put paid to most of those records, there wasn't one in 1941 as the country was otherwise engaged so we now have to wait for the 1951 census which probably won't be released until 2051. I won't be alive by then so maybe SKS will dig me up when it is released. lol Regards Lord Martyn *************************************** Send your List messages using **PLAIN TEXT** and always **TRIM AWAY** superfluous old messages in replies. Hi All Not strictly a Surrey question but here goes. Does anyone belong to a UK Family History society that records or videos the talks given at meetings? If so, please could you let me know, Off List, who they are. Thanks very much. Maureen -- Maureen Burton Member ESFHS

Hi Paul I have seen Herbert May from Horley but I am quite confident that it is not our fellow. Our understanding is that only Herbert migrated to Australia and I have heard that he never made contact with his family in England after he came out here. We'll just keep on searching and one day something may turn up that ties all our ideas together. Thanks for your reply. Denise

It is very nice of you to post your list of graves that are in danger of being swallowed up by vegetation at Mitcham Road Cemetery and generous of you to offer to provide further info and photographs of graves. However, you may also wish to consider posting your list on Find A Grave _http://www.findagrave.com/_ (http://www.findagrave.com/) where you may be able assist many more people who may not be subscribed to the Surrey Lists. Find A Grave already has details of 368 graves at Mitcham Road Cemetery (aka.Croydon Cemetery and Crematorium) but a random search of around ten of your names suggests that none of your names are listed so far. Find A Grave is a free to use site and maintains itself with limited advertising and donations. Anyone searching for the resting place of their relatives in the Mitcham area would greatly welcome your additional graves - particuarly as it would appear that they may soon be hidden from view. Best wishes, David

Hi all This was for Dorset list, but I thought it would be of interest to SRY & MDX as well as there are connections within both of these counties. "This is my first foray into Dorset, having been on other lists since 1993. At present I am attempting to track down some descendants of Bennett people from St. Anne Soho 1700's. I appear to have done so within the past couple of days. My g.grandfather, Frederick Bennett emigrated to Australia c.1852 and during the 1990's I found his parents and siblings at Soho, Westminster on the 1841 census etc., found marriages for most of them from original parish registers, children and grand-children. Frederick's sister Emily proved difficult. She had married a George Wiltshire, carpenter/painter at St. Anne's in 1865 and by 1872 they had four children - James 1865, George William A 1868, Frederick Benjamin 1869 and Emily Ellen Eliza (named after her Bennett aunts) 1872 - all born Marylebone. Sadly George Wiltshire had died prior to the 1881 census and I was stuck with Emily and her children (surname changed to Willsher) living at 5 Saville Row, Marylebone, not found in 1891,1901 or 1911. For about 15 years, nothing found until now. Almost by accident, attempting to correct a FindMyPast census page, I found that the surname had been changed again, to Willshen. And what happened next was what all genealogists wish for -- virtually only two families by that surname in the whole of England. 1891 found the family in Kingston upon Thames and to cut a long story short, George William A Willshen had married Alice Hannah MERCER 1893, then six children - one in particular William Leslie R Willshen married Alice M Hill 1930, Bournemouth, two known children, boy and girl both born Bournemouth district, (May not be able to mention them as they are probably still living!). Again, Edith Ada Willshen b. 1894 had married Frederick A.J. SARGENT, Kingston 1920, two male children born 1922 and 1920, Christchurch, the first child marrying a lass named DRAYTON 1943, Bournemouth. Once again, Hettie Willshen b. 1902 appears to have married (as far as can be gathered) a gent surname of WRIGHT 1928 Bournemouth and two 'known' children from that marriage, a girl 1930 Bournemouth and a boy 1934 Bournemouth. As this early information is only gleaned through FindMyPast and FreeBMD some of it is open for questioning. I have not been able to find a probable marriage for James or for Frederick Benjamin Willshen, though there is a death of a Frederick Benjamin 1908, age 39, which fits perfectly, and as he was 32 and single in the 1901 census, seems not to have married. Another surname that is connected to the Willshens is HOUSTON, so if any of this rings bells with anyone on this list, please email." Cheers Graham Melbourne Australia
