    1. [SRY] Hunt Family
    2. Rowena Gough
    3. Dear List Would someone be able to help me with this Hunt family? My GG grandmother is Barbara Ann HUNT, born Christ Church, Surrey. She emigrated to Australia in 1853, and married a Cornishman John SHUGG in 1854. I've found her parents and siblings in the 1841 and 51 Census, and her siblings baptisms. But I would dearly like to find her parents marriage, and if possible, their baptisms. John Richard HUNT was born c. 1808 Christ Church. He married Ann Clark Unknown c.1831, presumably in Surrey. FreeBMD gives his death as Sept Qtr 1854, Lambeth RD. His wife Ann Clark Unknown was born in Surrey c. 1811 (1841 Census), and her death was registered in the Sep Qtr of 1849, Newington RD. Their children were: * Barbara Ann bpt. 21 Feb 1832 Christ Church, Surrey * Samuel John bpt. 9 May 1834, Lambeth, Surrey * John Richard bpt. 5 Apr 1837 Christ Church, Surrey * James Charles born March Qtr 1830, Camberwell RD * William Frederick born Sept Qtr 1841, Camberwell RD * Louisa Jane Still born Sept Qtr 1848, Newington RD If anyone has researched or is connected to this family, I would be happy to hear from you. With kind regards, Rowena

    3. Hi Alan Now that Caroline has kindly found the marriage..... enter Savage into ancestry (no chrisitan name) and then down the bottom under parents put William Savage and Mary..... for the marriage of course you just put the fathers name...... It will then bring up children baptised for people with these names. There is probable more than one family though as it is a rather common name and Christian names. 3. Hi Andrew Unless you can get more information from the person that told you this.......my only suggestion would be to get the Parish registers for Great Bookham......either via CD or by seeing if they are available for hire through a LDS Family History group..... You really are not giving us all much to go on I am afraid. You are in Surrey I notice, so perhaps a few well placed phone calls to Family history groups, councils etc for the area of Great Bookham, but give you some ideas? 1. [SRY] Parish Records for William Savage & Mary Chillcott
    2. I have been able to trace the branch of the Savage family in Australia back to the Victorian death certificate of John Savage which shows the following; d 1918 Fitzroy, Australia, age 58 yrs Father; William Savage Mother; Mary Elizabeth Chillicott With that information I have been able to locate the probable marriage of William Savage & Mary Elizabeth Chillicott on Free BMD Sept Qtr 1850, Newington, 4/406. However at this point the British census information becomes rather uncertain as do the family trees on Ancestry.com Are parish records available which might further record William’s Savage family & Mary Elizabeth’s Chillicott family? Any help would be appreciated Alan

    3. Hi Elaine H J Dios in his "Victorian Suburb: a study of the growth of Camberwell" mentions Barkwith rd estate, in rather discouraging terms:     http://books.google.co.uk/books?ei=ybJCToHeB4G48gOg6KHjCQ&ct=result&id=t9_ZAAAAMAAJ&dq=Dyos&q=Barkworth Not sure what the little table tells us. May be worth getting the book from the library. I found it pretty solid, but it may appeal to you. There are line drawings of some of the developments, but I can't remember which ones. 1. [SRY] Thomas LICKFOLD of Wrecklesham. ( 1831 )
    2. >From Hampshire Advertiser & Salisbury Guardian Royal Yacht Club Gazette, Southampton Town and County Herald, Isle of Wight Journal, Winchester Chronicle, and General Reporter ( Southampton, England ), Saturday, December 31, 1831; Issue 441. The power of the toad is thus described in a note on the subject of animal poisons:- " Thomas LICKFOLD , of the village of Wrecklesham, near Farnham, in Surrey, whilst in the act of irritating a toad, found some liquid of intense bitterness fall upon his lips. Not being aware of its nature he repeatedly licked the external parts of his mouth to get rid of the taste. In about an hour, he felt a nausea, accompanied with the same intense bitterness, arising from his stomach. His lips, tongue, and pharynx now began to swell - so much that he could scarcely swallow or articulate. The abdomen became generally tumid, tense, and sore; and he felt a sense of trembling of the stomach, accompanied with a drowsiness, vertigo, and dimness of sight. By the advice of a medical man, he applied an oily mixture to his lips, internal parts of the mouth, and pharynx, and took some castor oil. The latter operated by vomiting and purging, and great relieved him. The swelling of the mouth subsided in about three days, but the abdomen was not reduced to its natural size for several weeks."

    3. Hi Alan Indeed they are. Thanks to Ancestry's collaboration with the London Metropolitan Archives, the vast majority of London CofE parish registers are available online. William SAVAGE and Mary Elizabeth CHILLCOTT married at St Mary's Newington on 11 August 1850. Both were "of full age" (i.e. over 21) and gave their place of residence as Kennington Place. William was a Cooper and his father was James SAVAGE (deceased). Mary's father was James CHILLCOTT, a blacksmith. Witnesses were James SAVAGE and Sarah SAVAGE. Hope this helps Caroline > Are parish records available which might further record William’s > Savage family & Mary Elizabeth’s Chillicott family? > > Any help would be appreciated > > Alan

    3. Dear all, Thank you for all the positive responses; we appreciate any help or tips on how to proceed. We don't have much at all about my g-gm and g-gf. 1. I've put a copy of the fragment of the certificate at: http://famdocs.s3.amazonaws.com/birth.pdf 2. My grandmother was born in 1902 and based on this and a photo from the 1940s, I think they were born in the early or mid 1870s, but this could be 5 or so years earlier or later. 3. From a wife of a distant cousin, we think that her name was Olga Ellen, and we know that Maxwell was a family surname. My grandmother was Edith Ellen, so Ellen seems a family name. 4. My great-grandfather's name was Edwin Peter Clarke. We don't have any documentation about him. We know that he served in the Boer war -- and I did find him listed as fighting at the siege of Kimberley, and I'll try to follow that lead, though he did not serve in a regular army unit so I am not too hopeful. I have searched on the various free and paid on-line services for a record of his birth, or their marriage, but without luck. Could the name of the mother on the certificate be "Olga" rather than "Eliza" on the certificate? We have studied the original carefully and it does seem to be Eliza, but we can't rule out Olga. I have wondered whether it could be my grandmother's certificate rather than my g-gm's. But this doesn't really gel with with other snippets of family history. The other question I have about the certificate is that it says the name of the mother was "Corlass formerly Maxwell". Does this imply that this is a second marriage of the mother? Many thanks for any help, Scott
