    2. >From Caledonian Mercury ( Edinburgh, Scotland ), Monday, June 15, 1818; Issue 15096. At Cobham, Surrey, Charles BARTHOLOMEW , aged 76. He was the third and last of the family, who were deaf and dumb; and although he was possessed of a large estate, and ( some say ) several thousand pounds in cash, he employed himself in serving bricklayers, catching moles, and any kind of drudgery.

    1. [SRY] Executition of Thomas ANSELL , smuggler, Thomas COLE shot. ( 1759
    2. >From Public Advertiser ( London, England ), Wednesday, August 15, 1759; Issue 7730. On Thursday last in the Afternoon, Thomas ANSELL , a noted Smuggler, known by the Name of Surry Tom , was executed at Horsham in Sussex, pursuant to his Sentence at the Assizes held at Lewes for that County, for being concerned with other Smugglers in shooting Thomas COLE , a Dragoon, near Elmer, in the Year 1757. The Deceased, and other Dragoons, was assisting the Custom-House Officers in hindering Smugglers from carrying off a large Quantity of Tea, etc., which they had landed out of a Cutter from Bologne, on which the Smugglers fired, and shot COLE dead on the Spot, and wounded several others; and for this Fact two of the Gang were executed, and hung in Chains last August. ANSELL declared that he was not the Man who fired off the Blunderbuss, that Day. He was a stout bold Man, and died with great Resolution, but very penitent. There was the greatest Concourse of People at the Gallows that was ever known, to whom he spoke for about a Quarter of an Hour, and said Women and excessive Drinking had brought him to this untimely End. After Execution his Body was delivered to the Surgeons to be dissected and anatomized.

    3. Thank you Pam & Judy, you've both been most helpful and it's now fingers crossed that Maria made a claim and that it's been recorded in Petty Sessions. Will visit the UK early next year, before the Olympics !! and if I find anything I'll post it to the list with any helpful tips I gain from researching Petty Sessions records. Kind Regards. 3. Hi Robert I have a booklet titled my ancestor was a bastard By Ruth Paley. First edition 2004 Briefly the 1834 the act changed where the onus went back to the mother. This act was repealed for obvious reasons ("the mother lost a great deal of her bargaining power") some ten years later in 1844 and remained "fundamentally unchanged until the 1990's, when the child support agency came into being". So basically. 1844 affiliation proceedings came into play. The person "could apply for a maintenance order before the birth of the child or up to a year after its birth". 2. "An application for a maintenance order had to be made to the petty sessional division or other jurisdiction local to the mothers residence." Therefore what you are looking for is the Petty sessions near Zennor road I would assume..... Have you tried the National archives and it's offshoot, documents on line. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk or http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/power-search.asp?searchType=powersearch Perhaps the local government or the area or councils sometimes have leads. 3. Hi Madeleine I used to live in Consort Road, not too far from the Bus Station in Queens Road. My school was John Donne Primary School, which I believe is now called Woods Road School. This would have been from about 1950 - 1956. I don't think your dad would have gone to this school as I believe it would have been considered to far out of his area. Unfortunatley I cant remember any other schools, except the ones that have already been mentioned. I do, however, think that if you contact Southwark Council, they will be able to advise you. 3. Hi Madeleine The 1907ish "Board School Map" (West Surrey FHS CD) shows Furley street and Marmont road is two streets to the east (they both run more or less north-south). Here was "The Peckham Park" an LCC Elementary School. A centre for Laundry and Woodwork was attached. Further south, across Goldsmith road and further east along the latter was Stafford Street school. It was another Elementary, a Wesleyan "non-provided school" (in LCC terms). You wd probably have to have lived west of Hill street (much west of Furley street) to have gone to Sumner Road. Probably Southwark Archives is the place to contact. 3. Hi, I am trying to find out if my great grandmother took action to obtain child maintenance for my grandfather and if she did where might I find a record of such a claim. >From what I've found out so far the the London Metropolitan Archives might hold records of this type and I will visit them on my next visit to the UK, but in the event I draw a blank with them is there any other place where such records might be held.. Any help or advice from the list will be much appreciated. Bob My Grandfather was born 12th Feb 1883 at 30 Zennor Road, Balham He was baptised 7th March at St.Mary's Balham, Surrey His birth Certificate is dated 13th March 1883, address 30 Zennor Road, Balham Registration district Wandsworth, Sub district Streatham, County of Surrey. There is no father named on the birth certificate, But I believe him to be a Morris Browne because my grandfather was named Henry *Morris Browne* Hook, and on the St.Mary's baptism page the name of the father is shown as Morris Browne, but crossed out, so we have a baptism entry showing Date - Mar 7th 1883 Childs first name - Henry Morris Browne - Fathers name - Morris Browne crossed out but with mothers christian name entered below, Maria. Surname - Hook address 30 Zennor Road Spinster Note. unfortunately Maria and son Henry do not appear on the 1891 census so I don't know where they might have been living at that time. but when Maria died in 1895 she was living in Little Queen Street, London, Registration district shown on the death certificate, St. Giles.
