    1. [ENG-SURNAMES] Sprouse Brothers
    2. George K. Sprouse
    3. I've been told of two Sprouse brothers who left Germany for England where they served the King. They may have lost favor with the King because of their temper. One brother is said to have left England for Virginia. The earliest ancestor I have is George Sprouse born abt 1777 in Virginia. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    1. [ENG-SURNAMES] C. RYMAN (an enigma!) grandson of William HARRISON
    2. Christopher and Joy Dean
    3. On the death certificate of my great-great-grandfather, William Harrison (who died 24 May 1888 at 3 Victoria Street, Forton, USD), the informant, present at the death, was named as 'C. Ryman, Grandson, Florence Cottage, Upper Mill Lane, Elson'. However, before I obtained the death certificate, I had not heard of C. Ryman! He is not at that address on the 1881 census nor on the 1891 census. However, having looked at C. RYMANs on the 1881, the following is possible because William Harrison was, at one time, based at the Royal Marine Barracks at Forton. I.C.J RYMAN U 21 M Madras British Subject, India Occ: Corporal R M L I Institution: "Royal Marine Barracks" Forton Census Place: Alverstoke, Hampshire, England. On the 1891 census, he is age 31, Sergeant R Marines, with his wife Mary and children, at 6 Alexandra Road, Forton, Alverstoke, and his place of birth is given as Bath, Somerset! Can anyone, please, help solve this puzzle? because I would love to know if this RYMAN is the informant referred to above, and, if so, how he fits into my family! TIA. Joy Dean nee Brooks, born in Beckenham, Kent PS Cannot easily get to a records office or family records centre at present because of an ill husband.

    1. [ENG-SURNAMES] STOTT Website update
    2. Greg Stott
    3. Hello All: A terrific new entry has been added to the STOTT website at www.stottshot.com. It is a STOTT History by Dr. Richard Stott of California. Richard has been an active Stott historian for many years and he has kindly agreed to share the results of his considerable research on the Stott site. You don't have to be related to Richard to benefit from or enjoy his good work. A useful portion of his research focuses on such matters as the origins of the STOTT name, Viking roots, coats or arms and various lines of Stotts in Lancashire and Yorkshire. These two neighbouring counties in England are home to about 90 percent of English Stotts. Richard has gathered much detail on the early Stotts in northern England right back to the 11th century. Many photos and maps add visual interest. He also chronicles the experiences of the line of Stotts who were among the first converts to the Mormon religion. This is fascinating history with a branch of Stotts in Lancashire making a perilous journey from England, across the Atlantic and eventually to Utah. It was an extraordinary testament to faith and the promises of a new land. Polygamy was part of the Mormon lifestyle in the 19th-century and Richard addresses this interesting topic as well. Richard also recounts some of the more cherished moments from his visits to Lancashire in search of old family locations. Here's a portion of text of text from his discovery of Ladywell Farm: "The barkeep, aware that I was a foreign tourist, asked me what I was doing in Ripponden & I told him that I was seeking information about my English family, their birthplaces & history. I told him that my great-grandfather was born in a place called Ladywell, Soyland & that other family members had lived in Ripponden & Rishworth for many generations. To my utter astonishment, he replied, 'You're standing about a hundred yards from Ladywell Farm, the property goes up the hill for about a quarter mile'. He added, 'I'll introduce you to the owner, he's standing over there having a pint with his friends.' " There is lots of browsing to be done with this new entry (actually several entries as you'll see on the "Contents" page). Enjoy and look to "What's New" link to find out what else has been added recently. There are two links to Richard's Stott History, both near the top of the page and further down the Home Page. I'm hoping to add a Search feature on this website in the near future to facilitate the tracking of names but, in the meantime, you'll have to rely on the "Find" feature found under edit on your browser to locate names on individual pages. 1. [ENG-SURNAMES] Batley - Wisbech, CAM
    2. Nick Batley
    3. Hello everyone, This is my first post to this list, and I hope it will be a succesful one !! I am researching the descendants of my great-great grandparents, Isaac Westerby Batley and Eliza Batley (nee Sketcher). Isaac (Westerby) Batley was born in 1855 at Walsoken, Norfolk & Cambridge - his mother was Susan Batley, while the birth certifcate does not show his father's name. However, he used the middle name Westerby throughout his life, and I have found two Westerbee brothers in the Wisbech union workhouse in the 1851 Census, so I assume one of these fellows was my Isaac's father. Isaac Westerby Batley married Eliza Sketcher in 1877 at Wisbech, Cambridge. Their children were as follows: Charles Batley b 1879 Wisbech, Cambridge Thomas William Batley b 1880 Wisbech, Cambridge Susan Elizabeth Batley b 1881 Peterborough, Northampton Horace Batley b 1884 Wisbech, Cambridge George Batley b 1886 Wisbech, Cambridge Herbert Batley b 1889 Wisbech, Cambridge George Batley was my great grandfather, and he married Minnie Parker in 1910 in Hull, Yorkshire. George Batley was killed in action in October 1918, five weeks before the end of the First World War. The only other information that I have on George Batley's siblings is that Susan Elizabeth Batley married George Charles Fox in 1911 at Wisbech, Cambridge. If anybody is researching this family, or knows any other information about this family, I would be most interested, and I would be pleased to hear from you. Thank you, and regards, Nick Batley Sydney, Australia ###################################################################### This e-mail message has been scanned and cleared by MailMarshal http://www.marshalsoftware.com ######################################################################
