Jean - Mathers is definitely the Arnold Bennett ancestor. Unfortunately, the pamphlet I have doesn't name all twelve children of Sampson and Phoebe. John is supposed to be the oldest. He and Ann were baptized together in 1813, and may have been twins. They, and the next two (in 1814 and 1816), were baptized at St John's Church, Burslem, and I know that the registers of that church have been published (Hanley Reference Library has a copy). Then the next six were baptized at Swan Bank Wesleyan Methodist Church, Burslem between 1820 and 1830, but the baptisms of the other two have not been traced (I'm paraphrasing the pamphlet here, this is not anything I've found out for myself). An 1818 Directory shows Sampson as a potter living at Star Croft (later called Church Street), Burslem. If I find out any more, I'll let you know. I have not got very far into this side of my genealogy, My greatgrandmother Eliza was the daughter of Sampson Bennet and Phoebe but I only found one Sampson and Phoebe marriage that was about the right time and she was Mathers. I have not proved it yet. Any information you can give me I will be grateful.
