John Weston Born January 1853 at 30 The Abbey, Bucknall. Would " 30 " be the house number ? And does anyone know where " The Abbey " would be in Bucknall ? Dave, In Local terms "The Abbey" has always refered to the area now covered by the council estates at Abbey Hulton and took its name from the medieval Abbey at Carmountside (next to the school). In the 1850s this area was all farming area and a few houses along Leek Road. I would suggest that you contact Hanley Reference Library and ask them what is the best map they have of the Abbey Hulton Area around 1850 ( this predates the 1st OS map) If they have a copy you can get A3 sheets printed for 40p - If that aint value then I dont know what is ... If you are still local then I would look around the junction of Leek Road and Greasley Road. On the west side you will see Abbey Street leading down to Mill farm. These are about the oldest houses in that area . At that time "Th'Abbey" was in the Parish of "Bucknall cum Bagnall - so their records may also help.... Steve
