    1. [Pots] LEIGHS Endon China man

    3. Hello I am totally stuck with my 2 great grandfather, Henry LEIGHS, and would welcome anything to break down this particular brick wall. I am looking for his baptism, and therefore his parents. In fact, anything. According to the 1851 and onwards censuses Henry had a thriving china and glass business in Guildford, but was born in Endon, Staffs about 1809. He married Emma DEW in Lambeth in 1838 and the china business was thriving in 1839 as it was in Pigots 1839 Guildford. This pattern of movement puzzles me. Why did he move such a distance? and why Lambeth? His father's name was John on the marriage cert, and John was also a "china man". The Guildford move I can understand because Emma was born in East Clandon, just up the road. Staffordshire records are unable to find a baptism for Henry in Endon or Leek, and it is now suspected from another family historian researching his second marriage (after 1861to an Ellen) and family in Egham, Surrey, that he may have been a Quaker. There is also a suspicion that the other LEIGHS shop (John LEIGHS, grocery) in Guildford in 1839 might have belonged to his father, or perhaps a brother. None of the censuses show up a John LEIGHS, however, so he may have died before 1841. Can anyone suggest where else I might look in Staffordshire for Henry LEIGHS' birth or baptism, or to help answer the question as to the move to Lambeth/Guildford? Or am I stuck forever? I have also posted this to the Staffordshire list so forgive me if you read it twice. Thanks Yours Vicki Turner
