Jacqui The complications of Baptismal Records.!<g> Received = Child was Privately Baptised ( at home) This Reception into the congregation is part of the Public Baptism Service, so would take place possiblly on the first time the child attended church! Private Received - as above but not during a Public Service. i.e. privately. Private - Baptisms performed at home by Clergy, usually because infant was too ill to take to church, once recovered they would be received into the church!! Conditional- Baptism performed at home by other than Clergy e.g. Midwife or other Confirmed C of E. person - usually Clergy required a full Baptism to take place in the Church at a latter date!! To quote from the 'Book of Common Prayer" When the time for Baptism comes ( in church ) the Priest will preface the Baptismal words with- "If thou art not already baptised, <name> I Baptise ... etc. " hth Helen -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, 23 March 2003 11:43 a.m. To: [email protected] Subject: [Pots] Terminology used for Baptism records Hi list, Whilst searching Parish Registers a few days ago I came across several terms used for a number of records for Baptism: Received Private Received Private Conditional Several of these entries gave a date of the Baptism, a birth date and a Received date. The record for my grandfather gave his birth date of 16th September 1894, Baptism date of 26th October 1894 and Received date of 25th November 1894. I would appreciate suggestions regarding the meanings of these additional notes.
