Hello I'm not even sure if I'm on the correct list, but perhaps someone can help me. I have an 1881 dwelling place census entry in Caverswall as I-" Staffordshire. This appears to be a school (perhaps for naughty boys). There is a superintendant, matron, teachers, domestic staff and a large number of boys of school age. The superintendant is listed as Superinendant of Indus. Would be grateful if anyone could tell me what kind of establishment this was. Thanks. Winifred
Hello Winifred, I think that your school was the Industrial School located at Werrington. At the time of the 1881 census Werrington was within the Parish of Caverswall. As Steve has already explained the premises are still in use today as a Young Offenders Institute. I think it is interesting to note that many of the `guests` in 1881 were not from Parish or the immediate area.
