I too received a rather curt reply from him, I bought the census only to find that two weeks after there was a more comprehensive set, i asked what it would cost to purchace the missings discs, I was not given the opportunity to do so, just the price of the new complete set. I'm not to sure that i wou;ld use his service again. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Russell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 3:23 PM Subject: [Pots] Missing Folios from Beavington CD's > Hello list > > Has anyone who has the 1851 census for North Staffordshire from Gordon Beavington had any problems with whole batches of Folios missing? > > I recently received the 1851 name index from BMSGH, and yesterday was looking for some of my GRINDEY family on the Beavington CD's. I couldn't find some of the folios in HO 107/2008 for Leek, and on closer examination found several chunks of folios missing, along with some individual pages. I e-mailed Gordon and he checked the first missing lot, which he found, and I admit I was mistaken with that batch.. He said he didn't have time to check the others. > > This morning I have gone through 2008 with a fine tooth comb, and am convinced that the missing folios are not there. I have also checked the ED nos and there are some missing too, which correspond to the missing folios. I also spent some time on PROCAT trying to pinpoint the missing folios, which I think I have. I sent this info to Gordon, but his reply was that it was *my* problem and he didn't gaurantee perfection and offered me a refund, which I don't want. Admittedly, this was at 4.30 am Canadian time. > > Before I take this any further with Gordon I would like to check that it isn't just me missing something. I also found about 8 individual pages missing. Am I being unreasonable in expecting all of the pages in any piece to be there? > > I must say I am dissapointed in Gordon's attitude. Has anyone else had this sort of response from him? It is a shame as I truly believe he is doing a good service in making the censuses available at a reasonable price, but in his haste to get out as many censuses as possible he skimps on the quality control. I should add that although some of the scans are difficult to read, I don't have a problem with the quality of the scans, as I have done some census transcribing myself so am aware of the difficulties. My problem is that I have paid for something which isn't there. I would be really dissapointed if I knew that some of my family were on the missing folios, and I had bought the CD's specifically to find them. > > Hope someone can help > Thanks > Jackie Russell > > > > ==== ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES Mailing List ==== > The List for the Pottery Towns of the Ancient County of Staffordshire > >
I bought a set of Staffs cds from Gordon, one cd wouldn't read and he immediately offered me a complete new set at no charge. In the end I opted for just the faulty cd replaced, which arrived very quickly. I haven't checked for missing folios, they'll all be the same I suppose? Keith in New Zealand
