Pls see John Aysnsley on 1901 RG13/2575 Folio 73. Occupation - China Manufacturer. "Earth" scrawled across this. (I picked his name at random, as I knew his occupation.) I was not for 1 moment suggesting that all pottery is earthenware, but that this seems to be some sort of classification, maybe for statistical purposes. It possibly harks back to the old term "earth potter". It wld explain how the 2nd person knew that it was "Earth", as there was no alternative. I must confess that I have not noticed the word "china" used instead in this context, but maybe some enumerators got it wrong.
