    3. Can anyone fill me in on details of the lottery amongst potters in Burslem c. 1840? Was this organized by unions to protect jobs? by the government? My gggrandfather was required to emmigrate in January 1842 because "his number came up "and "by special permission" came to the U.S. The story is that he had two weeks to settle his affairs--and family--purchase his own passage and get out of England. Did the program last a long time? Reading suggestions welcome. Thank you. Anne B. Wagner Portsmouth, RI USA

    3. Thanks, Eric. Conditions were even worse than I imagined. GGGrandfather Goodwin emigrated in January 1842, I guess before the riots and very early in the Emigration Scheme. He was a key player in East Liverpool, Ohio, pottery history. Lucky for me, eh? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At 09:06 AM 9/14/2005, you wrote: >Anne, > >Try the following:- > >http://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/features/history/archive.shtml > >click on - Pottersville > > >Regards - Eric > > > >----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne B.
