    1. Iain Kerr
    2. Helen Verrall
    3. Friends Many of you will have known Iain. Sadly , I pass on news received today, through the Listowners List. Letters/Mail of condolence may be sent to the address given or if posted to the list, will be passed onto Iain's Family. ---------- Many list admins will have known, or known of, Iain Kerr, who very sadly died last week from cancer after a short illness. For those who did not know him, he contributed on many lists, notably the military ones, being listowner of the WORLDWAR2 list, as well as various regional ones, and the GOONS & SoG lists, (and until a year ago, GENBRIT). Although he wasn't subscribed to my Oxfordshire list, if I had a military question I knew I was always welcome to forward it to him - it would be promptly & fully answered. Various lists have had notes forwarded on to them, circulating pieces of information. I have clarified the family's wishes with Iain's daughter Kirstie. Please feel free to circulate this to your lists if you feel it is appropriate. (Please note she would like to collect all notes of condolence, and give personal thanks for them. May I ask list admins to forward any they have received - after the funeral). His funeral: His funeral service will be on Friday 14th June at Our Lady of Sorrows Church (RC) in Eton, Berkshire at 11 am. Kirstie has confirmed this is not to be a family-only event. Tributes & messages of condolence: These may be sent to Iain's wife & family, either by email, to Iain's address iainkerr@clara.net , or by post. Iain's family's address is listed, as he was a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies, at http://www.one-name.org/cgi-bin/search.pl?find=2404 Kirstie says: " I have been collating the messages of condolence which I will be keeping as a tribute to my Father to pass on the next generation of Kerrs and I do want to reply to them myself so many people have been so kind and there messages have helped my family during this difficult time. I am hoping to have a Obituary ready this weekend which I was going to post on several list and on my Father's web site so other's can share what I have known all my life, that my Father was a rare individual." [His webpage is at http://home.clara.net/iainkerr/index.htm ] Donations in his memory: Kirstie said "We have requested that it be only family flowers but donations to the : Thames Valley Hospice, Hatch Lane Windsor SL4 3RW would be welcomed as they looked after my Father so marvellously during his last weeks. We can not praise or thank them enough for the care they gave him during his final days." I have contacted the hospice about donations. They are *very* grateful for all donations. Donations may be made by cheque, or by credit card. They will accept both sterling cheques and ones in foreign currencies. They have assured me their bank does not make any charges for handling foreign currency cheques. Anyone wishing to make a donation by credit card may telephone them on: 01753 842121, or fax details on 01753 832886. From abroad replace the leading "0" by "44". Email contact to ruthr@tvh.org.uk . Please mention Iain when making a donation. The genealogical community has lost a great man, friend to many, generous with his time & ever keen to help, inform & guide others. -- Helen -------- Helen Verrall Temporary List Administrator STAFFORDSHIRE ENG-STS- POTTERIES DESERTED - VILLAGES PUBS - INNS

    2. Helen Verrall
    3. Friends In the next two weeks Rootsweb is changing over to new servers and there could be delays for some services and others may not be available at all until changeover complete. Mail Lists will not be greatly affected - but there will be about 24 hours when mail is not distributed, this will be list by list, depending on the server used. They are not able to tell us when exactly this will be- So please if you do not receive any mail, do not deluge the list or me with queries as to why not! There will possibly be a few other hitches while the new servers take over - Rootsweb states - "Thank you for your patience and understanding while we go through a few "growing pains." I am sure you will join me in wishing them well! Helen Helen Verrall Temporary List Administrator STAFFORDSHIRE ENG-STS- POTTERIES DESERTED - VILLAGES PUBS - INNS --

    1. ADELINE MARTHA JACKSON/JOSEPH HOLDCROFT Leonard Road, Northwood
    2. Keith Jackson
    3. I wonder if anyone with a knowledge of the streets in this area can help me pin it down? Adeline is a half great aunt and is something of a mystery in my family. I'm slowly working out her life but she's not making it easy! My Dad's particularly fascinated by her as she was completely unknown to him until I started to delve a bit deeper into our background. She was only child of my Great grandfather, William JACKSON, and his first wife, Adeline BOULTON, and was born in September 1868. Unfortunately, her mother died of child bed fever less than a fortnight after the birth. In 1881, William and Adeline are living with William's parents on North Road, Burslem. William didn't remarry for several years so Adeline was significantly older than his other children. In the 1891 census, young Adeline is living with her father and step mother in Langley Mill, Derbyshire, where William had moved for work in 1890 - he was a saggar maker - but they had kept contact with the family back in the Burslem area as William's mother is also listed, as a visitor. It may well be that Adeline returned to the Potteries to nurse her widowed grandmother as she was missing from the family in 1901. I eventually found her marrying Joseph HOLDCROFT, a coal miner, at Holy Trinity Church, Northwood, on December 7th 1896 (which explains why my grandfather didn't know her as he wasn't born until 1898). Joseph gave his address as 17 Leonard Road and Adeline's said to be living at No. 2. I can find a Leonard Street in Burslem up near Smallthorne but wouldn't have expected a couple living there to have married in Northwood, particularly after banns had been called. Was Leonard Road one of those renamed at the turn of the 20th century? Any suggestions gratefully received. And, of course, if there are any descendants of this couple who'd like to make contact that would ice the cake! :-) Keith -- Web Site: http://www.cix.co.uk/~kjackson Salt - Butterton Staffs, Swadlincote Derbys, Lloydminster & Pugwash Canada Wright - White Houses Moira Leics. According to the 1901 census he was a "beerseller pub" working for himself at home. I assume therefore that 1 Peel Street was a Public House. My Grandma Jane BURNS/BYRNE was born at Hanover Street , Hanley in 1884, I am trying to establish if her and her family were still in Hanley in 1891. Her Mother was Margaret (nee Dixon), Father Patrick, there should be other siblings, names unknown as yet. I am trying to find this information for an 81 year old Aunt who knows little of her Aunts and Uncles. Many thanks in advance Rosemary.

Normally our helpers come from the London area, but now we are looking for members or non-members who are willing to help by stewarding or manning stands who live in, or who have easy access to the Midlands. 1. Interpreting a Baptism Entry
    2. Ron Snape
    3. My father and his next two siblings were all christened at St Mary's, Tunstall, Staffordshire in 1908, 1911 and 1913. Beneath the date of baptism is the symbol "C" (or, perhaps, a letter "e" lying on its back), in all three cases. There are a few other scattered entries that also have this symbol but it is not usual. The symbol is in the same position that is used on some entries to denote private baptisms with the words "[Privately]" or "[Privately dd mmm yy, Received dd mmm yy]". The archivist at Stafford Record Office could offer no help. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? -- Ron S

    3. I've been asked by Dominic Johnson, FFHS Director of Education, to publicise the FFHS Genealogy Award for Young People. I've confirmed that the entrant does not need to have family members who belong to Family History Societies. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Federation of Family History Societies is holding a competition for the Genealogy Award for Young People. There are two categories, one for those who are 14 or under on 31st July 2002 and one for those who are 15 to 18 on that date. Full details are at http://www.ffhs.org.uk/General/YoungPeople.htm Although the Federation covers Family History Societies world-wide, the decision has been made to restrict entrants to this, the first such competition, to residents of the United Kingdom. The venture is somewhat of a pilot scheme. Quoting from the web page: "Enter for the Genealogy Award for Young People by writing a story about some character or family history event that is of interest to you." ========================= That could keep them quiet while you do the spring cleaning! I know that there is a listed remains of a foundry in the grounds of a cottage in Spring Wood rd and I have a relative Thomas HOWELL who gives Spring Wood as an address on 1881 census - he was a blast furnace labourer. On the 1851 census there is another brother James HOWELL at Old Furnace Bank, also an iron worker. Where was Old Furnace Bank (as I can't find it on current maps)? More upto date, I would like to find out more about the George and Dragon pub in Chesterton - now demolished I believe. It was a coaching in I believe. In the 1950's or 60's another relative George Howell was the landlord. Many thanks in anticipation.
