Hi there Listers. Have only just subscribed to the Potteries List. I am currently reseaeching the Johnson Families and associated families from Tean & Checkley. Other Surnames involved with and part of these families are Nash Howard Hurst Sanders,Beaman Chell Walker, Wright and Farmer.. Most of the families come from round Tean,Checkley,Rocester,Winnoth Dale, Cheadle and various addresses in the Potteries. Any help or knowlege of these would help. Oldest Date for the Johnsons is 1690 Marriage of George Johnson to Ann Brierly. No knowledge of parents at this stage, hopefully when I receive the Microfiches for Checkley from the Salt Library at Stafford more will be recvealed. 1. Charles and Annice GATER
    2. Linda Fawcett
    3. Hello again Paula, I've looked for Annice on the whole census -no luck. Tried all Agnes' born 5 years either side of 1879( up to the census of course)- 1 in Oxford and 2 in Surrey. Apart from one in St. Olaves workhouse in Southwark(no father's name), the other fathers are not Charles or coal miner. Tried all Alices same dates - 2 in Staffs-one father Thomas(tailor) and the other John (coal miner). It seems to me most likely that she lied about her age on her marriage. It is very, very common. Therefore she probably would not have been born by the 1881 census. Got a list of all Charles Gaters on the census. They were in London, Berks, Cheshire, Staffs, Warks, Herts, Monmth, Surr, Wilts, and Kent. Can't really check them all to see if any are coal miners, but they have not got Alices or Agnes' of the right age. Only checked the ones in Staffordshire. Found two possibles: Church St., Audley, Talk O Th Hill, Staffs. Charles Gater, Wid., Coal Miner, 49, Born Cheshire Sons 12 and 10 years Married Dau Sarah Shenton 26 ( her husband could have been on nightshift) her sons 9,5,2months, and dau 4. 98 Queen St, Rugely, Staffs Charles Gater, 20, collier, born Newport, Shropsshire Mary Ann, 19,collier's wife, born Brereton, Staffs (noticed at 90 Queen St. William, 27, Iron miner, born Newport) I think you will have to try to find Annice on the 1891census. I hope that these will help you to begin looking. Best wishes, Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paula J Myers" <pjayem1964@btinternet.com> To: <linda-fawcett1@supanet.com> Sent: Sunday, June 16, 2002 12:20 PM Subject: re Annice & Charles GATER - Thank You > > Hello, > > Just to say thank you for looking up Charles and Annice for me, I truly > appreciate it. > > I believe that Charles Gater was a coal miner. 1. Re: Mossfield Colliery
    2. J. Roberts
    3. There is no certain date for the opening of Mossfield colliery. From personal memory of the Colliery Plans, as Surveyor there, it was working in the 1700's. At that time it was not run by the Mossfield Colliery Company. In 1855 there was a deed of Co-partnership between Hawley & Bridgewood, coal masters. At this time Mossfield belonged to a company under the partnership of First part: Martha Harper, widow, Second Part: Mary Walker (wife of the Rev. J H Walker) and Walter J Napier (Barrister). Third part: Felix Hulse Hawley (colliery proprietor): Fourth part: James Glover Bakewell (colliery manager), Fifth Part: Herbert Hawley (colliery proprietor) and several others quite a few of which were women. Following a very varied career, the Colliery came eventually into the hands of The Mossfield Colliery Company on 31st December 1902. There were two explosions at Mossfield. The first being on 16th October 1889 when 66 lives were lost. Five bodies were never recovered. The second Explosion happened in 1940, and there is a memorial in Longton Cemetery listing all those killed. On a lighter note, Mossfield was known as "The Old Sal". It derived this name from the fact that in it's early days there was an old "Beam Pump" used to remove water from the workings. Tom Jones was the pump man and also Hauling Engine worker. His wife, Sarah, used to keep her eye on the pumping engine when Tom was dealing with the hauling of coal. To make this duty less of a burden She was always to be found near the Pit Top Knitting, or in the nearby George Salt's Cottage. As a result, the men dubbed the Pumping Engine "Old Sal" and the name stuck right up to the closure of the Colliery in the 1960's. There is no known picture of the colliery that now exists. There used to be one in my Office but it was "lost". Hope this is of interest.
