    3. I am looking for the SHEMILT family, in 1891 there was seven children from two families - there was at least two males but as yet I cannot find any trace of any of the children or their off spring. They were based around the Chorlton on Medlock area. If anyone can help I would be very grateful, I seem to have hit the proverbial brick wall. Hi, maybe not much use but you never know. Back in about 1971 I was serving my time as an apprentice fitter at Akron Engineers in Trentham. There came a young man, surname SHEMILT to work on the bench along side us. He would be of a similar age to me ( b1953 ), he was a student in I guess engineering. He attended Newcastle College, now the bad news. He got killed in a car accident on the A34 north bound carriageway just above the college toward Milehouse Lane. This info may help you to piece a jigsaw together sometime, who knows ? Kindest regards de Dave

    1. Royal Engineers Militia
    2. Ron Snape
    3. My Grandfather Charles SNAPE served in South Africa and later in WW1. He was in the Militia of the North Staffs Regiment (The Prince of Wales's). I have found both his Militia attestation and his WW1 records at the PRO in Kew. It has always been my understanding that his elder brother Albert also served in South Africa with him. I have a studio photograph of two soldiers in colonial uniform and believe(d) the other soldier to be Albert. I could find no corresponding attestation for Albert in the North Staffs Militia papers. In the WW1 enlistment documents for my grandfather Charles, under the heading of Previous Service, it gives his service in the Militia and states that he served in South Africa. The corresponding entry for Albert says that he had previous service in the Militia but states simply "Served time", no mention of South Africa or of any other embodied service. Albert was evidently not in the North Staffs but (during WW1) in the Royal Engineers. Was there any Militia regiment attached to the Royal Engineers? Did the Royal Engineers serve in South Africa? Did the Royal Engineers have any sort of recruiting base in north Staffs (Tunstall)? Where is Albert's Militia documentation? Any thoughts very welcome. Ron S

    3. Dear Colin, I have just read the emails which I saved to reply to and find that there is no reply shown to your email. I must apologise. I have not come across a Thomas Hulme yet but I have three branches of Hulmes to find, two for my husband whose grandfathers both married ladies name Hulme in Fenton and I have Hulmes in my ancestry on the Parr side, these mainly lived in the Burslem/Tunstall area. However this does not signify as even tho transport was not as easy they moved about quite alot. Once again, apologies for not replying earlier.
