As promised the next update from Archive CD Books NB The free directory with the Census offer ceases at midnight (BST) 1 September. But the Free Directory for first time orders to ACDB will remain open at present. Access at http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/books/census/index.htm Helen -----Original Message----- From: Rod Neep [mailto:rod.neep@archivecdbooks.org] Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 12:44 PM To: CDBOOKS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CDBOOKS] 1861 Census CD Project Report - Archive CD Books - 29 Aug. Archive CD Books 1861 Census CD Project Report - 29 August. In keeping with my policy of keeping you in touch with what is happening with the Archive CD Books 1861 census CD projects, I can now report the following: The Top 10 by numbers of sales price ===== Nottinghamshire 35.00 was 40.00 Cornwall 30.00 was 35.00 Dorset 20.00 Devon 47.00 was 52.00 Norfolk 33.00 was 35.00 Essex 30.00 was 31.00 Lincolnshire 40.00 was 42.00 Middlesex 20.00 Gloucestershire 35.00 was 37.00 Staffordshire 80.00 was 85.00 and the bottom 3 price Bedfordshire 20.00 Northumberland 49.00 Oxfordshire 20.00 It is obvious that price does not necessarily affect number of advance orders, as illustrated by two of the worst sellers, Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire. In fact, Oxfordshire is so *far* short of covering its costs at this stage that I may even consider cutting my losses and scrapping it. If that happens I'll have a set of films that I don't know what to do with. Bedfordshire does not worry me, as although the orders are low, the costs are also low. Oxfordshire and Northumberland do cause me concern. I know why advance orders are very low. And that concerns me even more. =================================================================== COVERING INITIAL COSTS - AND PRICE REDUCTIONS Although *numbers* of advance orders are interesting, to me, the real factor is how close they are to covering their initial costs. That is the point at which prices can begin to be reduced. start current price price Cornwall 35.00 30.00 Dorset 20.00 (already minimum price) Nottinghamshire 40.00 35.00 Norfolk 35.00 33.00 * Staffordshire 85.00 80.00 * Essex 31.00 30.00 * Gloucestershire 37.00 35.00 * Lincolnshire 42.00 40.00 * Pembrokeshire 20.00 (already minimum price) Middlesex 20.00 (already minimum price) All of the above have now reached their first target. That of covering the initial costs. (Those costs still do not include the costs of making the CDs). * denotes new reductions today. ======================================================================== == ! Remember, *everyone* pays the final lowest price. ! The more advance orders, the lower the price will become. ! It will be *very* much easier to reach the next target and reduce the prices further. Those with reduced prices can still reduce further when more advance orders are received! ======================================================================== == Note that Devon, which does not appear now in my list above, has already been reduced in price from 52.00 to 47.00. Therefore it no longer appears in my own top 10, as it is now running at a small loss. What I am doing at this stage, is to sometimes purposely *over-reduce* the price once its first target has been reached. Therefore as soon as the price is reduced, it alters the order in *my* top 10. The counties that are now close to reaching their first target, and therefore to have their first price reduction are (in this order): current price Kent 52.00 Suffolk 31.00 Devon 47.00 Started at 52.00 already reduced to 47.00 now close to another reduction. Derbyshire 32.00 Leicestershire 22.00 Durham 48.00 I have purposely omitted those that are already at GBP 20.00 as that is probably going to be my minimum price for any census CD set. (I may change my mind if they reach a higher number of advance orders though). Those further away from their first reduction (by meeting their first target of covering their initial costs) are: Sussex at 76% of first target Hampshire 75% Worcestershire 71% Warwickshire 71% Cheshire 69% Northumberland 50% SUMMARY After a week and a half since the 1861 census project was announced, I am starting to become happier ;-) I am happy with 17 of the counties (out of the 27), but unhappy with 2 of the counties. Staffordshire, the expensive one, has now come through its first target and the price has started to reduce. I have every faith that I will be able to reduce the prices on all of those that have not yet been reduced yet, and every faith that those that have already been reduced will be reduced further. It is still very early days as yet. There is only one way that prices will be reduced further, and that is by people placing advance orders. You folks can set the price. However, if you wait to see what happens, then it won't happen! As an added incentive: 1. For all advance orders received by midnight Sunday September 1 (British time! - and it is a *strict deadline*) you will receive a FREE CD of a relevant county directory. Order two counties, get two free directories. 2. We are still running the special offer for new buyers from the Archive CD Books Project. With your first order, you will get a FREE copy of the superb *1791 Universal British Directory*. That's 5 large books which cover all of England & Wales! Worth GBP 29.74! You won't wait for the census CDs to be released, the free one will be sent out immediately to you! (Note: if you are a new buyer then you get both the 1791 Directory *and* the relevant county directory free!) Hi to everyone, I've been trying to find any information on my G.Grandparents,Thomas and Catherine Alford/Allford,nee Curless. They lived in Tunstall, though Catherine was born in Goldenhill.Thomas was born about 1874 and Catherine about 1878. Both of their sets of parents were from Ireland, according to the 1881 census, and I'm sure that one of them, if not both were Catholic. If anyone has any advice or information on either of the families,PLEASE get in touch, Best Wishes, Helen.

Once again, thank you George. Blessings on you, my Jaquiss genie angel. If SKS has any information about these couples or about Jaqu*s or research guidance please contact me. I appreciate your sending these. Obviously Benjamin & Hannah Jaquiss nee Cooper are my 3x great grandparents. Somehow I had everything but the name of the church. All I had was "parish church". Richard & Harriet Jaquiss nee Hallam were Ben & Hannah's first born and his wife. I had been given this once before but I'll have to try to find the witnesses. I'm not sure about the rest yet but we have an Issachar b 1764 purported brother to Benjamin so perhaps the Issachar below is his son or in some way not yet known related. Another branch of the family (brothers to Benjamin's father Thomas) have quite a lot of John's but I wasn't aware they went to Suffolk - but who knows. As for Sarah we have heard of Jaquiss' in Warwickshire but I don't have them tied into our tree yet. So you did it again. And I thank you for sharing. I do appreciate this information. Every little bit helps. I am sharing this with other Jaqu*s reseachers so all your good deeds shall be as widely as possible appreciated. Hi, list, I have bought several CD's from Ron 's ARCHIVE CD catalog, and have been very pleased. The price is reasonable , even for shipping to the US, so don't hesitate if you find something you want. Thought you would interested in this Note the more who buy Staffordshire, the more likely the price is to come down. Helen NEW CENSUS CDs FROM THE ARCHIVE CD BOOKS PROJECT I have now finalised on a list of censuses (for the first batch) that will be released by the Archive CD Books Project. (Most are for 1861, and some are for 1891). RG 9/985-1015 Bedfordshire 1861 RG 9/4110-4145 Carmarthenshire 1861 RG 9/4328-4360 Carnarvonshire 1861 RG 9/2556-2649 Cheshire 1861 RG 9/1512-1600 Cornwall 1861 RG 9/2487-2555 Derbyshire 1861 RG 12/2719-2787 Derbyshire 1891 RG 9/1370-1511 Devon 1861 RG 9/1325-1369 Dorset 1861 RG 9/3678-3809 Durham 1861 RG 9/1054-1123 Essex 1861 RG 9/1712-1807 Gloucestershire 1861 RG 9/631-718 Hampshire 1861 RG 9/462-556 Kent 1861 RG 9/2244-2304 Leicestershire 1861 RG 9/2311-2411 Lincolnshire 1861 RG 12/2552-2637 Lincolnshire 1891 RG 9/762-802 Middlesex 1861 RG 9/1190-1267 Norfolk 1861 RG 9/3810-3896 Northumberland 1861 RG 9/2435-2486 Nottinghamshire 1861 RG 12/2638-2718 Nottinghamshire 1891 RG 9/880-920 Oxfordshire 1861 RG 9/4146-4172 Pembrokeshire 1861 RG 9/1601-1711 Somerset 1861 RG 9/1905-2062 Staffordshire 1861 RG 9/1124-1189 Suffolk 1861 RG 9/557-630 Sussex 1861 RG 9/2128-2243 Warwickshire 1861 RG 9/2063-2127 Worcestershire 1861 (more are scheduled) I am very proud of the superb quality of the scanned images. We have worked from really excellent films (not microfiche) copied from the first generation films at the PRO, and have then used the very best possible film scanner currently available to digitise the images at a high resolution. That's £45,000 worth of scanner. QUALITY. Using Adobe Acrobat Reader you can zoom in and in to read the pages. You really don't have to squint to read the them. Zoom in to 100% without any loss of detail. That's because of the very high quality of the scanning. Yes, that's right..... UP TO 100% (and beyond). The detail is perfectly readable at a much lower magnification of course. Rather than digitise to a lower quality and then have magnification and distortion start to make it hard to read, we have given you the best QUALITY to start with. Print quality is excellent too! Even on a standard bubble jet printer you can get superb results. You can print first class copies of any page for use in your family history documents. QUALITY DO print out pages of the census enumerator's books to include in your family history files. Not only are they the proof to support your research, but other family members find it absolutely fascinating to see these actual old original documents (no matter how sceptical they may be about your hobby). Download the samples from the project web page, and see for yourself. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Advance orders will be accepted, but credit cards will not charged until the CDs are ready for despatch. Orders placed in advance will be charged at the stated price or *less*. That's right... or LESS. IMPORTANT. READ THIS With some of the sets, I have a very good idea of the quantities that may sell. With those, the price has now been fixed, to cover the costs. The final price *may* reduce a little. BUT Some of the sets are subject to sufficient advance orders being received. The maximum price of these if you order now will be shown. The more advance orders over 100 that we receive, the cheaper the final price will become, and everyone pays the cheaper price. Some of these projects are very large and very expensive to produce. Prices are based on the anticipated number of sales of each set (which varies from county to county). The object of the exercise is to make the censuses *available*, and *not* to make huge profits. That is one of the basic principles of the Archive CD Books Project. Therefore, the more people who pre-order those marked as such, then the cheaper the price will become - for everybody! I hope that you like this idea! For example, if the stated "starting price" of a particular county is 50.00 and lots more people order before the final release date, then the finishing price could become substantially lower. Say, 30.00. Whatever happens, then *everyone* will be charged at the lower price. Credit cards will not charged until the CDs are made and ready for despatch. It is in everyone's interest to place advance orders early. For more details, samples and prices, see: http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/books/census/index.htm So.... go and have a look, and then please do tell your friends on the relevant mailing lists. The more that order in advance, the cheaper they become! Dear Helen, thank you for the message. Where is the 1861 census obtained from as I have not seen it advertised. Also as I have received this message does it mean that I am still subscribed to the Potteries list. I think that I am having trouble you mentioned with the Staffs list so I had better resubscribe to that. Thanks Ann Simcock. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Helen Verrall" <hverrall@ihug.co.nz> To: <ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 18, 2002 12:40 AM Subject: 1861 CENSUS on CD > Thought you would interested in this - > > Note the more who buy Staffordshire, the more likely the price is to > come down. > > Helen > > > > NEW CENSUS CDs FROM THE ARCHIVE CD BOOKS PROJECT > > I have now finalised on a list of censuses (for the first batch) that > will be released by the Archive CD Books Project.
