    3. Janet - the fact that he says on the census that he is from the Potteries - If you have any other references that mention Lane End then that is Surely the Lane End around St Johns church Longton . The only other Lane End is in the North of the county and is realy only a meeting of two roads . I would suggest that you look for him in the 1851 census - for Staffordshire- and find him in there, this would also give an indication as to where he was born and potentiall his parents if he is still with them . Steve

Hi Janet. Francis POTTS is not on the 1841 Lane End / Longton census. Still worth checking the 1851 as Steve suggests though. Regards Earl.

    3. Pam - These are both very common names in the potteries and there would be many occurrances in the 100 years that you are seeking . You should give a little more details on who you have - such as Christian names, specific dates and towns . I dont have any connection to nthe names and am just trying to increase your chances of a reply STeve ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pammy" <pjleather@sympatico.ca> To: <ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 19, 2002 6:26 PM Subject: Colcloughs and Podmores > looking for the ancestors of Colcloughs and the podmores that work in > the potteries in the 1800's > >

    1. News From Ancestry !!
    2. Helen Verrall
    3. Friends We have been requested that the following news be passed on to you all- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MyFamily.com, Inc. Announces the Launch of the 1891 Census Online As a result of a meeting between our FFHS Chairman and MyFamily.com Inc, we have been able to obtain a copy of a Press Notice which is being released later this morning (18th September). The following are its main points: Later today, MyFamily.com Inc will announce the launch of the 1891 census online and of a project to make available online indexed, digitised images of census returns for England and Wales from 1841 through to 1891. MyFamily.com has signed a licence agreement with the Public Record Office (PRO) to publish these records. The task involves digitising more than 7 million original census return images and indexing more than 130 million names. As a first step in this process, the 1891 census for Oxfordshire is now available online at http://www.Ancestry.co.uk/ .Visitors are able to search a name index and browse through images of the original census returns, containing information on more than 200,000 individuals living in Oxfordshire in 1891. All of the 1891 Census returns for England and Wales will soon be available, with MyFamily.com publishing additional images weekly throughout the coming months. Upon completion, the collection will be fully indexed, searchable by name, county, and parish, and search results will link directly to images. "We welcome moves to put more of the UK's public records online to reach a wider audience worldwide," said Anne Kilminster, Head of Enterprises at the Public Record Office. "We wish MyFamily.com every success with this project." Note added by the FFHS: Having visited the ancestry.co.uk site, there is currently a 14 day free trial on offer. However, it says "Once your free trial has expired, your subscription will be automatically renewed" and "After your free trial you will be charged just £69.95 for 12 months of unlimited access.". So, if you do take up the offer please make sure you cancel before the end of your free period to avoid your credit card being charged. The Press Release also refers to a quarterly subscription of £29.95. 3. Friends A new type of Anti- Spam Device, is being used by some Listers - This requires each mail to be verified . i.e. mail is returned to sender for verification and then back to recipient. The use of this Anti-Spam Service, on these lists is forbidden. Rootsweb will either bounce mail, using it or forward the mail to me. If I or any lister is sent mail off list, that requires verification, the poster will also be unsubscribed. Listers if you receive mail, from another lister, with such a request, please forward it to me. The particular service in my opinion is Spam in its self, as requires you to visit a site advertising their services, for the verification to take place. There are plenty of other ways to reduce the amount of spam received, talk to your ISP if you are being troubled by a lot of spam. Most ISP's are running anti -spam of devices their own, or if not will be able to suggest one that filters the mail rather than asking for each letter to be verified. 1. Finding Graves in the Potteries
    2. Michelle McKnight
    3. Hi All I wonder if anyone can advise me please? I have obtained the funeral announcements from the Sentinel of my grandparents. As recommended by an e-mail on this site I telephoned Carmountside and asked them if they could give me the grave details, that is where the plot is and who is buried in it. I had understood that this information was easily available. The lady whom I spoke to asked me to write in regarding the Carmountside entry and said that they would not be able to help with the Bucknall one. My parents are visiting Stoke-on-Trent next week for a couple days and hoped to visit the graves. The lady in Carmountside has said that if I write in they will have the Carmountside information available for my parents. Does anyone know how I can find directions to the burial plot in Bucknall? My mother has never seen her mother's grave, her mother died when she was 7 months old. The relevant details are Alice Leigh - died 12 Oct 1931 - Service New Connexion Chapel, Bucknall Buried Sat 21 Oct at Bucknall Church (I believe this is Marychurch) Charles Leigh - died 24 Aug 1965 - Service Blurton Church Buried Fri 27 Aug 1965 at Carmountside Any advice would be gratefully received. For anyone researching CUTTS or with CUTTS connections - we are having a get-together next weekend. Date: Sunday, 22nd September, 2002 Time: 10.30 a.m.- 4.30 p.m. Venue: The Peacock Inn, Four Lane Ends, Oakerthorpe, South Wingfield, Derbyshire. Plenty of Parking! Access is by outside steps from car park, but Take Care.... Upper Function Room. - Refreshments available Bars Downstairs - Meals available. This is an old coaching inn which no doubt some of our ancestors would have known and used as it was the main coaching run from Derby to Sheffield. No doubt horses were changed over at this point ready for the hills ahead. A warning to all those who imbibe too enthusiastically, or dally too long, is seen through a glass panel in the floor of the main bar!! Look out for it as you arrive..... (For those of you who do not know the area, it is situated by the traffic lights at the crossroads of the main road (A615 in my old atlas) from M1-J28 via Alfreton following Matlock signs , and the road from Chesterfield to Pentrichlane End - between Ripley and Ambergate on the Ripley-Ambergate Road (The Excavator Pub at this junction). Map ref SK3955.) The aim of the get-together is for anyone researching CUTTS to meet and exchange information and have a pleasant day. Please come along whether you feel you know everything, or nothing, about your own particular Cutts family...Bring any charts/family trees/photos, lists from family bibles, 'brick walls', letters, etc.. etc. We want to make the day as interesting as possible for everyone. Also there are many places of interest in the area for those who want to make a weekend of it with their families. Matlock Illuminations take place that weekend so a chance to kill two birds with one stone! The new Derwent Valley Heritage Site is centred around the old Cotton Mills at Belper, Cromford and Matlock Bath and you can learn more about the Industrial Revolution and the way it affected our forefathers here than in many libraries......and it is ' Reality'. A good way to re-learn the history we did not pay attention to at school, and to enthuse your children into not doing the same.....(We know that a Henry Cutts was in charge of Cromford Canal Wharf in 1811 and need to know more......) John Frawley is working hard on the last minute arrangements and agenda for the day, Lesley Bayston, our List leader, has been gathering in as many non-listers as she knows who may wish to join us, Jim Cutts has promised to bring his chart showing all who descend from Ralph Cutts and Elizabeth Amrie who married in 1630 (probably most of us in the East Midlands!) as well as all his GRO refs, and as many other records as his car boot will hold, Tony Cutt will be talking about DNA and Fingerprinting for future researchers, I will bring a few of my many files showing the family groupings I am trying to build, (too many to bring all) and I am adding my 'twopenn'orth' by trying to enthuse as many of you as can make it to come along and make our first Get Together a success. Summer has drawn us all away from our computers and charts and we are all promising ourselves that we WILL spend more time on it this Winter (I have not even managed to find time to extract my 1901 census yet) I will be travelling up to the area for a family event towards the end of next week, but will be staying locally over the Saturday/Sunday evenings and maybe spend some time in the Matlock Record Office or Local Studies before returning to Nottingham on the Monday or Tuesday evening. Anyone else staying in the area overnight, please let me know and I would love to meet you and have a meal/chat/stroll among the lights/whatever. Watch the List for more details. Hope to see many of you next week (with apologies to those overseas who cannot - but we may find out more about your relatives' families in the process). Lesley lesley.bayston@lineone.net
