This was a correctional school at Werrington. My great uncles Elijah and John KIDD were also inmates in 1881. Regards Earl.
Hello Winifred, I think that your school was the Industrial School located at Werrington. At the time of the 1881 census Werrington was within the Parish of Caverswall. As Steve has already explained the premises are still in use today as a Young Offenders Institute. I think it is interesting to note that many of the `guests` in 1881 were not from Parish or the immediate area. Its not actually in Caverswall . The superintendant was of the Industrial School - On the 1881 lots of things get shortened . go to http://www.streetmap.co.uk and put in Werrington as aUK place and select the Staffordshire one - HM detention centre is bottom right Steve > > > ==== ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES Mailing List ==== > The List for the Pottery Towns of the Ancient County of Staffordshire > >
Hello I'm not even sure if I'm on the correct list, but perhaps someone can help me. I have an 1881 dwelling place census entry in Caverswall as I-" Staffordshire. This appears to be a school (perhaps for naughty boys). There is a superintendant, matron, teachers, domestic staff and a large number of boys of school age. The superintendant is listed as Superinendant of Indus. Would be grateful if anyone could tell me what kind of establishment this was. Thanks. Winifred

Dear All, I'm looking for any ideas, or concrete information, of course, about how to find out my ggggreat-grandmother Elizabeth BARTON. According to the „International Genealogical Index“ website, she was baptized on Feb 17, 1794 (All Saints, West Bromwich, Stafford). Eight brothers and sisters of hers were baptized there as well between Nov 6, 1785, and April 14, 1800. In all cases the parents are given as „James BARTON“ and „Sarah“. The Staffordshire archives told me the originals of the West Bromwich All Saints registers are held at Sandwell Archives, Smethwick Library, Smethwick. Elizabeth BARTON and John James KENT were married on Feb 4, 1815, in Newcastle-under-Lyme. I was also told there was no obvious short cut to finding this marriage, and it might be easier to use the Staffordshire Marriage Index. Thanks a lot for any hint. Phillip Minden
Several people have been asking about BENNETTs in recent days. There is a Rootsweb mailing list specifically for UK Bennetts. The address is BENNETT-UK-L@rootsweb.com, and of course, to subscribe, the address is BENNETT-UK-L-request@rootsweb.com. Best Wishes, Graham
Hi, my father was pals with the Proctor brothers who ran the local " Proctors " bus company. There was Ken, Ray and Frank at least. Frank lived in Malthouse Road Bucknall and had a daughter Helen who would be in her fifties by now. One other brother lived near to Weston Coyney crossroads. Not a lot of use this info I suppose, but one day it may be of help ? Regards de Dave.
Dear Steve I know very little about my Procters. I have a John Bradbury who married Emma Procter on the marriage certificate it states that her father was William Procter. Subject: Re: [Pots] St Johns Church Hanley In a "History of Hanley" by M.W.Greenslade page 154....... The registers date from 1754.*1 A house was built near the junction of Albion Street and Old Hall Street for the curate in 1813 with money raised by subscriptionand the mortgaging of the living. This was burnt down down during the chartist riots of 1842 and a new house was built soon afterwards in Old Hall Street, the rector receiving £2,000 compensation from the Hundred *1 = S.W.Hutchinson, ARchdeaconry of Stoke-on-Trent, 129. If memory servs me well - theer is also some info to this effect on the MIs etc as published by BMSGH. Steve
Thanks Steve. By the way, when I said it was good news, I meant about the Chartists being active in Hanley, not the loss of the records! I hope some of my ancestors were at the riotous meeting. Many thanks Pammy. I had noticed Solomon Burton in the 1881 census but looking at the info you just gave, gave me an idea of where to look next. I'll try the 1851 census of Longton to see if I can find the birth place of Solomon husband of Milicent Burton. Thanks again.
