Hi All, This is just a short message to those who are also subbed to the main Staffordshire List. The List server (Lists2) has had to be taken off-line for remedial works following its' recent crash. The main Staffordshire List (and all other Lists on Lists2 ie Axhlome, Workhouses etc.,) will be offline for a minimum of 24 hours. Please DON'T keep sending test messages to the list, it's extremely irritating and pointless! Also, any mail that is sent to the List Admin address will not be delivered as that service also relies on the Lists2 server. Dave Listowner: Staffordshire, Black Country, Potteries etc.,

Hi All, There has been a major server failure at Rootsweb, as most of you know different lists use different servers to process the mailings. This has led to lists such as Polly's Midmarch, My Black Country, Potteries etc having no problems, but lists such as my Staffordshire, Sheila's Isle of Axholme etc going offline. Please DON'T keep sending test messages to the affected lists, all that this is doing is adding to the problem of backed up mail. Advice now given by Rootsweb is that the afected lists will gradually come back on-line by Monday. Most posts have been queued for delivery over the next two days, but if you've posted a mail, and not seen it by Wednesday evening GMT (not your local times) repost. Some of you may have been or are about to be auto-unsubbed from the affected lists, wait for the problems to die down and then resub. Don't expect to see your mails show up in the List Archive as quickly as usual, there will be a delay. I personally now have a backlog of over 220 mails that have been sent to me asking what is happening. With the best will in the World I'll never get around to answering them. This mail should have answered most of your questions, if not, please give it a few days before you ask again. FYI the Lists affected all use what is known as Lists2 on Rootsweb, you may see this in headers that are sent with List posts. Dave : Listowner Staffordshire, Black Country, Potteries etc., And for those of you who are subbed to Isle of Axholme Sheila Wilson : Listowner for ENG-LIN-AXHOLME
Wish that I knew, haven't got the faintest idea. BC and Potteries which run on a different server to Staffordshire were ok. All lists that were on the same server as Staffs were also off-line. Staffs seems to have come back within the last 40 mins or so, but no news of what went wrong. To all who are subbed to the Staffordshire County List as well as being subbed to either the Black Country List or the Potteries List (can't post directly to Staffs subs). Staffs isn't there at the moment, it's gone on it's hols. Please don't keep sending test messages to see if it's working, you'll know that it's back when posting start again. Your "test" message will end up on the Staffs Archive, just think about it, in 100 years time some poor researcher will be looking around and wondering who this person "test" was, and just think of the problems if the surname researched is TEST!!!!! (it isn't an unknown name in the County!) Dave 8-)) Listowner : Staffordshire, Black Country, Potteries etc.,

With Their Ages, the Localities Where They Formerly Lived in the Mother Country, the Names of the Ships in Which They Embarked and Other Interesting Particulars." From the introduction: "Little could even the most sanguine of the early emigrants to America have contemplated the subsequent effect which their action would work upon history. Some of them, it is true, were men of position at home...... but by far the greater number was composed of comparatively obscure men." see Emigration page http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/acatalog/Archive_CD_Books_Emigration_23.html 2. As an example I have taken a page at random and here is what I found; Entries from *one* page of the RN Hospital 3 were born in Cornwall. 3 in Devon, 1 in Lancashire, 1 in Wiltshire, 2 in Middlesex, 1 in Somerset, 2 in Berkshire, 3 in Ireland, 1 in Yorkshire, 1 in Kent, 1 in Cheshire, 1 in Staffordshire, 2 in Scotland, 1 in Sussex and 1 in Isle of Man. Their ages range from 19 to 51. The Hospital is enumerated in 11 folios (22 pages), then there are the Barracks (11 folios), Plymouth Citadel (20 folios) and Millbay Barrack (8 folios).... no doubt there will be more! Food for thought.....? After more than a fortnight's work, indexing should be finished in the next two or three days, so the Devon census should start shipping next week :-) ________________________________________________________________ It may interest readers to know that Rod has recently opened a new website at http://www.british-genealogy.com dedicated to assisting people with their British family history research. This new site, which is still under development, contains details of the various resources of use to family history research, allowing the researcher to see how resources have developed over the years and what each resource actually contains. Also included is a tutorial of how to transcribe registers plus other useful resources. ________________________________________________________________ It is very pleasing to note that the orders for a number of counties census cds have now reached the level to allow some reduction in price, some have even qualified for three price reductions. Details of this may be seen at - http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/books/census/index.htm The potential is there to reduce these prices still further, if you are considering ordering a census cd do not delay, the final price of many of these census cds depends on the number orders that are received before the release date. Once the cd has been released that is the price everyone will pay. Do not delay order now and benefit. _________________________________________________________________ Don't forget to visit the Archive CD Books web page news where we bring you news, family history hints & tips, interesting articles, extracts from books and instructions on how to get the best from available resources all at : http://www.archivecdbooks.com/news/ To contribute stories, articles & snippets mail to : guy.etchells@virgin.net Cheers Guy ==== CDBOOKS-NEWS Mailing List ==== The "Latest Releases" page on the web site gives regular details of special offers - and free CDs! Hi All, From what I can find out, which isn't probably much more than everyone else. All Rootsweb Lists run from what is known as Lists2 servers are offline at present. The Staffs list came back on for a short time earlier today, but is now off again. Good excuse to utilise the Potteries List for the Northern part of the County and Black-Country for the South. I'll keep you all up to date as info comes in, but as our Listowners info comes from Lists2, it's rather sparse <g> Best Wishes Dave 8-)) Listowner : Potteries, Staffs, Black Country etc., -----Original Message----- From: Eric HARRISON [mailto:ric.kidsgrove61@btinternet.com] Sent: 28 March 2003 20:58 To: ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Pots] StaffsBMD update All, We have updated the StaffsBMD site with 17,000 plus births for Cheadle. The Family History Widow My Husband is gone, no Longer around The grass needs mowing and he's nowhere to be found! The sink needs fixen and the house needs some paint. So many Honeydoos I think I will faint! No he hasn't passed on and he isn't dead He's off with his relatives who have gone on ahead! He's studying their pasts, off in his own little room, And if I don't get some attention he'll be with them soon! So when I'm not sure where he is. It's never a Mystery! He's off working on his Family History ! by J.C. Hoskins
Many thanks (again) to Helen Verrall for coming to my rescue. I knew that there would be a "simple" explanation to my confusion somewhere!!! Regards Jacqui
