Hello Brian. Gosh, a famous name in Rugeley! At the mention of the Landor Society in history lessons, many a Rugeley schoolchild has nodded off......:-) Seriously, there is a local history society for the town begun by the Landor family, you may well be connected - a search on Google found the following address - www.rugeleyweb.net/landor . We haven't lived in 'Rudge' now for 25 years, but there was also a local doctor by the name of Dillon, I think he was still there when we left. Hope this helps, Regards, Penny Ewing.
I would be most grateful if a list member could help me trace a family named LANDOR, who lived in 'The Riddings', Rugely, in the 1930s, and possibly the 1940s. I recently 'discovered' a 1st cousin (twice removed), named Alan Wilson DUNCAN (b.1892), who served in the 2/8th Gurkha Rifles in India, and retired to England after the 2nd World War. In his military records, which I've seen at the British Library, he listed as his next of kin his uncle, 'R.H. LANDOR, The Riddings, Rugely' ( I don't know if 'The Riddings' should have been 'The Ridings'). I'm puzzled by the surname 'LANDOR', because Alan's mother's maiden name was DILLON. The LANDOR uncle might have been the husband of a hitherto undiscovered female DUNCAN or DILLON. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Carol - I believe the Directories ceased during the War - the one in Hanley Archive are for 1939 and then 1945 . Why not ask the archive if they would just have a quick peek nfor you - Chris and his collegues are very good . you will find their email address on the following web page http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/live/welcome.asp?id=201 Steve On 05 June 2003 05:02, CarolB [SMTP:carolbr@xtra.co.nz] wrote: > Hi > > I just joined for a request for some help from SKS.My g grandfather Philip > BRAITHWAITE occ: Mineral water carter ,from Liverpool took members of the > family to live in Longton during WW2. > If anyone has a Directory for that time could they please lookup his name or > any other BRAITHWAITES in Longton as it may help knock down a brick wall. > I am hoping that he has relatives there, possibly Uncles or Aunts. > Otherwise, could someone point me to a website which has information about > Longton during WW2. > > Much appreciated > > Carol Braithwaite > New Zealand > > > > ==== ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES Mailing List ==== > The List for the Pottery Towns of the Ancient County of Staffordshire
Hi I just joined for a request for some help from SKS.My g grandfather Philip BRAITHWAITE occ: Mineral water carter ,from Liverpool took members of the family to live in Longton during WW2. If anyone has a Directory for that time could they please lookup his name or any other BRAITHWAITES in Longton as it may help knock down a brick wall. I am hoping that he has relatives there, possibly Uncles or Aunts. Otherwise, could someone point me to a website which has information about Longton during WW2. Much appreciated Carol Braithwaite New Zealand
We have just finished scanning The 1851 Census for Wiltshire and it will be flying all over the world on Monday. This 4 CD set now joins Somerset, Bristol, Shropshire, Worcestershire & Staffordshire in the scanned group - some also have been transcribed. Just returned from a 2 night trip to the PRO in Kew and bought 1851 Dorset & 1851 Hereford - 1891 Birmingham & 1851 Oxfordshire should arrive in a day or two. (The prices in London are scary - paid 17 pounds for Fish and Chips.) couldn't get home fast enough. Have a price sheet for Wales - for those waiting. 1851 Birmingham - I have the film now, waiting to find a scanner that can handle oversized film. 1851 Cornwall will be started on Monday. Sorry, I pressed send too earlier, but I was so excited! After I sent the other message I suddenly thought about looking in another piece for my errant Folios and found them in Piece 2009 Cheadle, which was even on a different CD. The Registration district clearly says Leek and the HO ref down the side says 2008, so it was just that Gordon has put them in with the wrong lot. My original question to him was if he could just let me know if they were lurking somewhere else, which they were, but if he had just told me that, instead of refusing point blank that there was a problem, it would have saved me a lot of hassle, and him some bad comments on this list. All's well that ends well, I hope. John I am well aware that sometimes border areas appear in the neighbouring county census, but these are listed on PROCAT as being in piece 2008, but I can't find them. Referring back to the alleged!!! missing Folio's on Gordon Beavinton's Cd's. I wonder if anyone has taken into account that the areas referred to i.e. Longnor; Warslow, Ecton are on the borders of Staffordshire and such areas can appear in the neighbouring County. I am not saying that this is what has actually happened as I haven't checked the Disks against the fiche/film, but please do bear these "borderline" districts in mind before censuring anyone. Such areas appear on Archive CD Books 1861 Census and are having to be reproduced as separate items to the main set. Andy, Correction, John Mellor was my 3rd great grandfather, James was my father. Lisa
Andy, If you are referring to Hannah Mellor, this may be a relation of mine. I can tell you that Enoch Mellor and Frederick G. Mellor came to Trenton and started the Cook Pottery. If memory serves me correctly (which it isn't what it used to be) Frederick G. Mellor was associated with Mellor and Venables pottery. Story goes that Frederick G. Mellor recruited potters from Stoke on Trent to work for him in the States. Some actually believed that Trenton was named after the English town, but it was not. There are 2 families named Mellor that came to Trenton, one is mine and the other is not, or at least we have made no solid connection, although the family names seem to repeat through the generations. I know that James Mellor was my 3rd great grandfather and he married Jemima ??? (I recently moved and have not unpacked my family book yet). I have heard mention of an Oliver connection but not sure if it is mine or not. He had a son Reuben Mellor who married Elizabeth Pennington who died at an early age and remarried Agnes Haywood. You can go to http://trentonhistory.org/Services.htm and see if this will help you out. You can also check http://www.trentonlibrary.state.nj.us/trentoniana.htm I have found a lot of information there. Does any of this ring a bell?? Lisa
Janet I didn't go in all guns blaring. I merely asked him if he knew if the missing folios were lurking somewhere I couldn't find them. Unfortunately, the one lot he did check were there, and I admit I had missed them, but on my CD he had transposed two critical pages with the relevant Folio numbers, so I had missed them. He said he hadn't time to go on a wild goose chase to look for the others, but did send me a copy of a single missing page I had told him about. Fair enough, I thought, maybe I missed the other folios too. So I spent all of yesterday morning going through Piece 2008 page by page and also checking on the ED number. I still couldn't find the other batches, and also spent considerable time on PROCAT to see if I could work out which villages were missing. By this time I had quite a headache!! I think I found the relevant details, so sent the information to Gordon so that he wouldn't have to go off on a wild goose chase. I was surprised to get an immediate reply as it was about 4.30am in Canada. All I wanted and expected was a quick note to say thanks for pointing out the errors, and that he hadn't time to look into it at the moment, but would get back to me later, even if it took a couple of weeks. Instead, he basically said it was my problem, not his, and I could have my money back, and that he couldn't gaurantee perfection. The total of the missing pages came to about 8% of the total for that piece, which to me is too large an error. This is only one piece, and I only noticed the errors because I was looking for someone that I had the details of from the surnames index and couldn't find the pages. If I didn't know they should be there I wouldn't know they were missing. It was at that point that I felt a bit ****** so I wrote a reply, which is still in my drafts folder, and decided to see if anyone else had had any problems. I think, if the CD is actually faulty, then Gordon does put things right, but is not willing to look into any issues concerning the *content* of the CD. Now, 24 hours later, and after a night's sleep, which is probably what Gordon needed, I think I may have been a bit harsh on him. I think I'll just chalk it up to experience. Time to close this thread. I bought a set of Staffs cds from Gordon, one cd wouldn't read and he immediately offered me a complete new set at no charge. In the end I opted for just the faulty cd replaced, which arrived very quickly. I haven't checked for missing folios, they'll all be the same I suppose? Keith in New Zealand
i feel i must add comment to this discussion. I bought these c.d.s as soon as they were released and a long time later found that one would not reproduce anything on my screen. I contacted him and the following day received a reply with instructions on how to rectify the problem and a note saying that in case this was not possible he was replacing the faulty disc. To add to this when i originally bought them my method of payment didn't work and he allowed me to send a cheque drawn on a British bank account although and he sent the discs without prior payment. The cheque was cash at least a month after i received the discs andbefore my problem All i can think is that some folk may have gone in all guns blaring and not calm and rational as this approach always works for me. Hello All - I wondered if S.K.S. who has access to non-conformist records for Hanley of which I understand there could be a few, could do me look ups for a marriage and a baptism. The records would be Independent Congregationalist or Methodist as I know these religions were used by the family before and after 1858. 1. Marriage of James Gibson LOGAN - 1853 to 1858 (Bride unknown) 2. Baptism of John Alexander LOGAN in 1858/59. He was the son of the above. I would be very much obliged if someone could help me. My warmest regards to the List - Norman Woods, County Durham.
Thanks to Christine, Shirley, and Ann for confirming my impressions of Gordon's service. He says on his web site that he will sort out any problems as soon as possible or refund the money. I think this is his "get-out" clause. He refuses to even look at the problems I have found, and as others have said, we don't want a refund, we just want it to "do what it says on the tin". My first response when I received his second message was to reply, but then took a deep breath and decided to see if anyone else had any problems. I'd rather pay extra to a reputable company and get good support from them. According to his web site he has lots more censuses in the pipeline, but I personally would be wary of any more purchases. Buyer beware. Thank you for your time Jackie
