    2. Shirley Watkin
    3. Hi: could someone tell me if Marsh Street, Newcastle Under Lyme is still on the map and if so, is it still residential? One of my husband's ancestors, Richard Watkin, occupation - hatter lived on Marsh St. in 1818. We are tentatively planning a trip to England next June and want to see all places in Newcastle and Stoke where his family once lived/worked. After 1818, most of the Watkins were potters. Still looking for info re John Watkin b. 1846 in Newcastle, was in the 35th Regiment of Foot and at one time was stationed in Surrey. Cannot find his service records or any info abt. him after the 1881 census. Yvonne Watkin Yvonne Watkin

    1. [Pots] Well Street and the Captain of the Titanic
    2. Jack Leigh
    3. Andy has asked for an extraction of the 1851 census of 107 Well Street, Hanley, which I have sent directly to him. It is at 1851 census, HO107/p2004/f147. By coincidence, I had recently looked at Well Street myself. My own interest was 51 Well Street where Edward John SMITH, future Captain of the Titanic, was living with his family as a one year old in 1851. So it was easy for me to find 107. I am trying to track down the truth (or otherwise) of a family story that my gt grandmother Ann Eliza DISSINGTON (born Hanley 1849) was a cousin of Capt. SMITH. If any listers have information about the family of Captain SMITH (or any DISSINGTON/DEASINGTONs or other variants) I would appreciate hearing from them. ....... 1. [Pots] Thomas Cartwright/Elizabeth Pane - son William 1807 Burslem
    2. Good Evening Listers, New to this list and posing a query. My ggg-grandfather was WILLIAM CARTWRIGHT born in Burslem 1807. He married Charlotte Hood (who was born in Hartshorne, Derybshire) in 1831 in Burslem, they then lived/remained in Church Greasley, Derbyshire, I am assuming this is because her parents/family were there. I have IGI ref for William's birth/bapt with his parents being Thomas CARTWRIGHT and Elizabeth PANE. The descendency of William Cartwright is known, and can be confirmed through various sources I have. However, I have a problem with his ancestors. I was sent some information last year about this couple (Thomas and Elizabeth) and whilst the marriage of William and Charlotte is correct, there is a major problem. There is a 'brother' (George) of William's on a list of children for Thomas Cartwright and Elizabeth Pane who was 2 months younger than him. All these supposed siblings were born/baptised - all shown in one batch on the IGI parents named as Thomas and Elizabeth (no Pane mentioned) - in a different placeto William and I am desperately trying to establish what is actual fact. Does anybody know of this family? This is driving me round the twist! Thanking anyone who can confirm information for me. Jen

    3. There's one more chance of error, Steve. 1a the Vicar or parish clerk ( who may not have been the person taking the wedding ) copies all the marriage entries for a quarter in longhand onto a sheet and sends to the registrar. I've done it, and I know how much concentration it takes - and how you have to guess at some names, especially witnesses! 3. Spot on Steve, Also remember that the GRO indexes were further copied (notice the typed GRO pages) these were done by typists brought in many years later, and that can account for yet more errors and omissions. When I have ordered marriage certs from Southport I look at which church it was at and then go up Hanley and check it against the entry in the parish records .....You'd be surprised how often there is a slight difference.
