    2. I note with interest the request for information of a Port Vale player. My mothers cousin was Wilf Kirkham, who I understand still holds 2 records for Port Vale. I would be very grateful for further information regarding his football career and achievements, as well as details of the man himself. Regards Jacqui Cooper

Absolutely no reason to apologise - trying to get evidence of what your relatives did, IS Family history and I am happy to offer the following to your grandson. I will ask Jeff Kent if he has anything more on Jack when I see him at the next home match. these are the games your Jack played in. Though I have none myself, I would suspect that you would see little of Jack in programmes other than his names on the team sheet section Season 29/30 Played 5 times in second divn at No 4 but never scored - not played in FA Cup Carlisle (H) Won 4-0 Nelson (A) won 3-2 Southport(H) won 1-0 Doncaster(H) Won 2-0 Crewe (H) Won 2-0 Season 30/31 Played 7 times in second divn at No 4 but never scored - not playued in FA Cup Everton (A) Won 3-2 Bradford PA (H) los 8-2 Bury (H) won 1-0 Plymouth (A) Los 1-2 Barnsley (A) Los 2-5 Milwall (A) Won 1-0 Bradford C (H) Won 1-0 Season 31/32 Played 12 times in second divn at No 4 but never scored - not playued in FA Cup Season 32/33 Played 24 times in second divn (7 @ No 2, 1 @ No 5 and 16 at No 4) scored 3 goals - not playued in FA Cup scoring matches were :- West Ham (h) won 4-0 penalty Manch Utd (h) draw 3-3 Grimsby (h) won 4-2 penalty The above is extracted from "The Port Vale Record 1879-1993) Author is and the ISBN number is 0 9508981 9 8 In the photo section, plate 15 is the 1930/31 team and plate 16 is the 1932/33 - though the players are not identified. 3. Dear Mike, it does not always signify that a middle name was the mother's maiden name. It is always a starting point but both my grandfather's had a middle name. Elijah Cook Mayer and Arthur Maddock Parr. I have discovered that the Cook had come from a family friend James Cook and went back to the 1830s several children in previous generations having had this middle name. I still have to discover why it was Maddock for Arthur as there are no Maddocks in the family. If the school teacher was very helpful to the family perhaps with one of the parents or elder children they would have given the next child that middle name from respect. Sorry it makes things difficult but it is often interesting trying to find the answer, it certainly was in my Cook case. 2. Hi Ann thanks to a copy of the 1851 Census sheet from Pam in Canada I believe the mystery is solved. John ORME lived next door to Robert MOORLEY in Clarence Street so it looks like a very close friend was being honoured. I shall have great delight in phoning 78 yr old Harry Orme MOORLEY to tell him how he got his name! Many thanks Mike Waterlooville

    2. Hi list, I'm stuck! My great grandfather was christened Harry Orme MOORLEY which would usually signify that his mother's maiden name was ORME. My GGrandfather was Robert MOORLEY but deceased at the time of his son's marriage. I believe Robert was born in Derby 22 Sept 1816 since this ties in with a Robert MOORLEY whose death was registered in 1878 age 62yrs. Likewise the same Robert might have been the guy that married Mary Ann GRIFFITHS in 1839. So where did the Orme come from? I am aware that a Rev ORME set up a school in Newcastle but one doesn't normally name your children after a schoolmaster or school! If some kind soul out there can help me I would be very grateful.
