    1. [Pots] KNAPPERS GATE
    2. Hi List, I have just looked up the Old Maps site and found a reference to Knappers T P on the London Rd close to Grindley House. I believe the houses on the left hand side may be the location of 10 & 12 Knappers Gate and also that of the White Cottage by the bridge over the Trent and Mersey Canal. A number of Gentlemen of the Road would seek shelter in the Workhouse where they would receive two nights accommodation and food for one day. To avoid contributing to the cost of food [1d] they would hide their money behind the loose bricks under the bridge. One day a Gentleman called on my Great Aunt Elsie to complain that his hidden money had been stolen. My GAunt suggested that when he next came this way to give it to hersg for safekeeping which he did later. News got around and there would be several jamjars with a few pennies in each on the mantle and no matter how hard up she was the jamjar money was never touched. TP may refer to Turnpike of which there were several Trusts in the 18th Century responsible for road maintenance. Would be grateful if someone could confirm I have the right location. 2. If you find out about this connection, I would be interested to know more. My great-grandmother Emily Sparkes worked for both the Pankhursts at their offices in Edgbaston and the Chamberlain's. I am, as yet, to find out when though. Jennifer

    3. Hi Gang! Thurs 10th Oct 2003 is the centenary of the founding of the Women's Political and Social Union by Emmeline PANKHURST. I found out this week that my ggg-mother was Mary PANKHURST. I was wondering about a connection... Emmeline GOULDEN m. Richard Marsden PANKHURST, a lawyer, educated at Manchester GS. (according to a brief biography I found via Google) Richard was born in Stoke in 1834 (altho' on the 1881 census his age is 44? - Emmeline is 22) 'My' Mary was b. 1835 Hanley the dau. of William Horatio and Edna PANKHURST. Wm was born in Clerkenwell, Middlesex and was a manufacturer. I found on the 1881 census that a possible candidate for Richard's father is James W. PANKHURST living at Villa, Barlaston, b. Middlesex, by coincidence(?), also a manufacturer. Are these guys brothers? Has anyone come across any info which might help? In view of the centenary, I thought I'd ask. TIA Andy.

    2. Thanks for trying Anne. Its the name of a road or lane not far from Trentham. At the turn of the century (1900) the family lived in White Cottage or White Bridge Cottage and were there until the late 1920's. This cottage was destroyed when the road was widened. Mike Waterlooville

    3. Tim if you are into reading LDS films try no. 1655359 parish of Astbury, Cheshire, mostly bishops transcripts for nearly 300 years, which means page after page of fine handwriting, some of it very dark, a lot of it photographed 2 or 3 times. At the end it goes into direct copies of the parish (both Astbury and Congleton) from about 1780-1817. I noticed a lot of Wootons there while looking for Wildbloods, (VERY few of them ) and Vernons. Good luck. S.G.Stubbs P.S. If you order it, give yourself at least 6 weeks to read it thru.SGS ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Callaghan" <tim.callaghan@4hstc.freeserve.co.uk> To: <ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2003 10:02 PM Subject: [Pots] Reposting Interests > I am researching the following names - > > BANKS : Stretton (Cheshire), Manchester (Lancs) > BRADBURY : Lymm (Cheshire) > BROWNBILL : St Helens (Lancs) > CALLAGHAN : St Helens (Lancs), Ireland > DANIELS : Bowdon (Cheshire) > GABRIEL : St Helens (Lancs), Liverpool (Lancs) > GRATWICH : Barlaston (Staffs) > HIGHAM : Lymm (Cheshire), Leigh (Lancs) > JOHNSON : Over Peover (Cheshire) > JOHNS(T)ON : Wallasey (Cheshire), Birkenhead (Cheshire), Hull (East Riding), > North Shields/Tynemouth (Northumberland), Ryton (Co. 3. Linda: Try just the first name, approximate age, and place of birth. You might have to slog through quite a few, but I found my friend's William Fox transcribed as William Fos. I never would have thought to try that spelling. Happy Hunting!
