    1. [Pots] re: POTS Firemen
    2. Hello-I have just returned from Staffordshire, attended a family reunion at The Stone House Hotel. We visited the Gladstone Pottery Museum and saw their video about the various jobs/occupations. The "fireman" tended to the coal fires in the bottle kiln and it was quite a bit of responsibility on their shoulders, if the temperature was not kept exactly as it should the entire load of pottery could be ruined. I wouldn't have wanted that job! My family interests are as follows: BANKS in Tittensor, Stone, Eccleshall, Trentham, Stoke EMERY in Eccleshall WALTERS in Eccleshall WRIGHT in Tittensor, Eccleshall ALCOCK in Burslem BARKER in Burslem SEDDON/SEADON in Norton in Moors HARRIS in Burslem, Stone Had a lovely visit, wish I could have spent more time scouting out my ancestors whereabouts. Will have to return!! Jill in California

    3. Graham, Sue and Tony Not sure whether there was a Gas Works in Potteries - so this may not apply i.e. is a Red herring!! - but in 1861 Census Alfred VERRALL ( husband's line) was listed as a Fireman at the Gasworks - in Hove , Sussex. According to info. we have he both tendered fires and also was trained in extinguishing them, when necessary :-) Cheers Helen New Zealand -----Original Message----- From: Graham Pointon [mailto:graham_pointon@lineone.net] Sent: Sunday, October 26, 2003 11:08 PM To: ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: FW: [Pots] Davenport look up Sue, Just confirming what Tony says - I too have "firemen" in my line. 1. [Pots] LATHAM , COURTICE
    2. Donna Franklin
    3. Hello list, I am new to this list , but hoping I've finally found the right area for my LATHAM and (or) COURTICE ancestors. My earliest documented LATHAM was John Latham who married Mary Courtice in Bristol parish of St. Phillips & St. Jacobs. He was listed as a carpenter. My reason for believing he might have come from the areas this list associates, is this: Recently I have been contacted by another LATHAM researcher, who's ancestors came from the potteries areas, Burslem Stoke-On-Trent to be exact. Initially I thought , nah, that's not near Bristol or Devon( where another relative is currently unsuccessfully hunting) , but told her I'd keep in touch. Well I did a small bit of research on the potteries area and found an interesting tie to my family. The name WADE has been used repeatedly since immigration to america, always as a middle name. Usually associated with the first name Arthur. When I looked at Burslem Stoke-On-Trent, I was shocked to find out there is a potter with that exact surname, who lived during the same time period as my first known LATHAM ancestor, John, and his son Samuel. This would never have occurred to me exept for the mail I'd recieved regarding LATHAMs in the potteries. I also read, that the potteries area was the home of several confectioners. Another thing that sparked my interest , (my great great great grandfather, Samuel Courtice LATHAM was a successful confectioner in both NY and NJ as was his son, Samuel Wesley LATHAM). Now I'm hoping someone out there might have a clue to my ancestor's elusive family, possibly siblings of John, or Mary, or even reference somewhere to the names. thus far every lead outside of the potteries has come up cold. Thanks for reading , Donna Franklin -- {IRE,GERMANY/DENMARK,AK,SF/CA,NY,NJ}BRENNAN,HILSDORF,MCKENZIE {HOLLAND,NY,NJ}CADMUS,BAILEY,JOHNSON,VREELAND,(AND COUNTLESS OTHERS) {ENGLAND,NY,NJ}LATHAM,COURTICE(CURTICE?),SMITH,CHURCH, {SCOTLAND,NJ,CT}WAIT,BELL,CROW(CROWE?),VANBRUNT,FREEMAN(FRIEMAN?),BUCK {DELAWARE}FRANKLIN,COOPER,TYRE,TOOMEY

    1. [Pots] Jane Maria Abbots
    2. Good Evening Listers, I am trying to trace the ancestry of my gg-grandmother Jane Maria ABBOTS born c.1841. On the 1881 census it merely states she was born in "N Potteries, Stafford"; she does not appear on the 1891 census - her husband is stated as widowed. In 1881 she was living with her husband (Thomas Sparkes age 42, a jeweller) at Lees St, 35 Oxford Place, Birmingham. Her age is stated as being 40. It would appear that their eldest son was Frederick Sparkes aged 20, their youngest being 7 months old. Their son was my g-grandfather Thomas Herbert Sparkes who was born on the 9th August 1873 (I know his descendency). At this time the family were living in Radnor Street, Birmingham. Jane married Thomas SPARKES date? - I cannot find a ref on the IGI, BMD nor ancestry civil reg for their marriage. Without this, I cannot find out who her father was, so as to further research on her family. Does anybody connect to this woman? Best wishes Jennifer

    3. Thank you, Eileen. This is only the 2nd time I've had news of the family via the Potteries site. It's great to talk to other people who are interested in sharing and understand the frustrations of long-standing brick walls. Frederick and I are 1st cousins several times removed. Until your letter he has only been a name on a card. You've made him a bit more than just a skeleton - now he has a bit of skin and bone. 3. It has been very interesting watching/reading this site from the sidelinesfor quite a while. Now I want to join you all, so here are my family names - at least those that seem to belong in this area. It is interesting seeing replies from B.C. Canada, and somewhere else here in Australia. That really stretches the boundaries! VERNON, Daniel - married Elizabeht WILDIGG 3 Sept 1756 Audlem, Chesh. WILDBLOOD all pre 1730 in Staffs and Chesh WILDBLOOD all in Shrops. Wales and Yorks READ in Yorks West Riding pre 1720 COLLINGS/COLLINS in Yorks pre 1720 A particular problem at the moment is the marriage of Edward WILDBLOOD to Mary GREGSON. They had 5 sons apparently born in Burslem, Frederick C 1865, William E. abt 1869, Frank E. 1873, Alfred O. 1877, LEonard C. 1881 then 2 daughters, Maud 1883 and Dinah 1875. All those children and no marriage on St. Caths index? Would really appreciate a breakthrough on this one. If anyone needs a hand with Australian vital records I'm willing to give it a go via my local LDS family history library. TIA. S.G.Stubbs
