    3. Jack Written that way is not as confusing - I looked through the Vital Records Index, and baulked at the number of John and Samuel Leighs in the Records. I wish you successful hunting. One day everything will fall into place - I am sure!! Regards Helen New Zealand -----Original Message----- From: Jack Leigh [mailto:jack.leigh@shaw.ca] Sent: Tuesday, November 04, 2003 9:01 AM To: ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Pots] Re: Rev Samuel LEIGH In reply to Ann SIMCOCK, my "possible" PARR relationship is given later in this message. In reply to Helen Verrall regarding the generations in my earlier message, Rev Samuel LEIGH (1785-1852) was possibly a brother of my grandfather's great grandfather, therefore my 3 x gt grandfather. I phrased it that way, confusing though it might be on a quick reading, because it was my grandfather's firm belief, stated in family notes he left, and letters he wrote to cousins in the 1950s. Unfortunately he didn't say where he received the information -- I can only assume through family sources long gone. To add to the confusion, every male LEIGH direct ancestor of mine is either a John (usually with a brother Samuel) or a Samuel (usually with a brother John) so writing about them can be very confusing to others. Here's my LEIGH descent as far as I have it. All except my Dad and I were born in the Potteries or near to them. John Laurence ....me (born Vancouver, BC, Canada) John Laurence (1906-1996) ....my dad (in Canada from 1907) John (1879-1966) ....my grandad (Rev. John LEIGH, in Canada from 1907) Samuel (1843-1899) ....my 1 x gt grandad (a potter & farmer in Armitage) Samuel (1814-1863) ....my 2 x gt grandad (a potter in Hanley) John (1792-1867) ....my 3 x gt grandad (a potter's printer in Burslem to 1830, Villeroy & Boch in Wallerfangen, Saarland, from 1830 unknown ....my 4 x gt grandad I've been trying to find my unknown 4 x gt grandad for about 25 years. If I take my grandfather's belief at face value, he will be Matthew LEIGH, the father of Rev. Samuel. Matthew married Hannah UNWIN in Biddulph 1775 March 6. My grandfather left a lot of family information and I have been independently able to confirm all of it except the story about Rev. Samuel. Since the direct approach through my 3 x gt grandad John didn't work in finding his parents (there are too many John LEIGH's born about the same time - 1792 - in the same area), I decided to try the indirect approach by researching Rev. Samuel. This way I hoped both to prove my grandfather's belief and to find my 4 x gt grandfather. But no luck. With the help of other family members in Australia and England, I have extensively researched Rev. Samuel's genealogy without proving that 3 x gt grandad John was a brother of Rev. Samuel. I have the names of Rev. Samuel's parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, etc. including most baptisms, marriages, and some deaths (baptisms are in Milton in the parish of Norton in the Moors, and Biddulph). I have read all the books which refer to Rev. Samuel, innumerable encyclopedia entries, and written to the authors of some of the academic research regarding Rev. Samuel. I have researched wills, parish registers, census entries, monumental inscriptions, etc. I have the PCC will of Rev Samuel himself (it mentions only his 2nd wife, Elizabeth KAYE). I also have the PCC will of Rev Samuel's solicitor brother Ralph of Hanley. Ralph's will is a genealogical delight because he names more than 20 relatives including his wife, Mary THORNICROFT, various stepchildren (of Ralph) including William THORNICROFT, ironmonger, and deceased John THORNICROFT, and John's under-age daughters Mary Ann and Matilda; sister Hannah, wife of Joshua PARR, and their son Matthew Leigh PARR; deceased sister Mary, first wife of Enoch KEELING of Etruria; Mary and Enoch's children Sarah KEELING and Esther BIRCH, wife of Joseph BIRCH of Hanley; sister Ann wife of John WILLET, farmer of Milton; brother Joseph, innkeeper of Hanley (The Dog and Partridge), and brother Samuel (Rev. Samuel). But no brother John. However, there is still a perhaps remote possibility, or maybe he was a cousin, not a brother? ............ 3. Jack I'm curious as to generations here - you say Rev. Leigh ( 1785 - 1852 was possibly a brother of your Gt Grandfather. I am not challenging this only querying the generation, as my 3Xgt Grandfather was born in 1799 , - my Gt Grandparents were born bet 1846 and 1853. This is info. you may have - have found the following in the Encyclopaedia of new Zealand Pub. Reed 1961 Samuel Leigh born Milton near Hanley 1st Sept 1785 died Reading Berkshire 2nd May 1852. Married 1. Catherine CLEWES born Staffordshire marriage at 14 DEC 1820 Hanley, Stafford, England ( a childhood friend, she died in Australia. 15 May 1831) 2. Elizabeth Kaye ( Widow) August 1842. There was no issue from either Marriage - but he adopted and brought up 2 of his wife's nieces ( doesn't say which wife) NB As he was brought up in the Congregational Church - converting to Wesleyan Methodist before training for Ministry - He will not appear in Crockfords Directory ( first pub 1868) as they are only of current postings and of C of E Anglican and Episcopalian Clergy. Though married in C of E Church - he and his siblings were more likely to have been Baptised in a Non - conformist Church! 3. Steve we went to Gladstone this summer, two adults plus two nine year olds and a six year old. We had a lovely day, the boys threw pots and painted gnomes, Wayne and I were hours reading up on all the historical stuff, and it was a very interesting and entertaining day. We really got a feel for the lives and conditions of the workers, our ancestors. did you see the steam engine on Fred Dibners programme this summer? at least, I think it was the one at Gladstone anyway. 3. Alan - if you were in Longton cemetery you were only a hundred yards from Edensor cemetery - There are about 6 standing stones and several more laid down. Some are in excellent condition Edensor like most other churches became full by 1900 and only folks who had plots booked would be buried there. If you came out of the main entrance of Longton cemetery you face St Greg's School, in Spring Gardens Road. Turn Left and 100 yds you can go left down Goms Mill or turn right into Edensor Road . But before you do look at the kiddies pre school on your right - that is a very old building, and the one behind is even more interesting with its own "yard". Anyway turn right and Edensor church would have been on your left - go in through the gate hole - no gates, and most of the stones are on the left though there are three further up . As you say Steve, very atmospheric when you look at the row of terraced cottages. Being in that neck of the woods, I had a look around Dresden churchyard and aslso Longton Cemetery. Would Edenser Church have had its own graveyard, or would Longton Cemetery have been used? I am asuming Edenser Church is long gone. Certainly a whole heep of my tree would have been BMD'd at Edenser Church. Also, could anyone tell me if Longton has a Local History Society? _________________________________________________________________ Get Hotmail on your mobile phone http://www.msn.co.uk/msnmobile ==== ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES Mailing List ==== The List for the Pottery Towns of the Ancient County of Staffordshire --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [Pots] Crockfords lookup Rev. John LEIGH
    2. Jack Leigh
    3. Anne, I would like to take you up on your kind offer as given in the Potteries mailing list. My grandfather, Rev. Canon John LEIGH of the Anglican Church of Canada, was alive in the years you mention and I would appreciate a look-up of the entries for him. My LEIGH family came from the Potteries. Since there may be more than one John LEIGH in the lists, here's some background. In 1927, he would be in St John's Central Park, Burnaby, BC, Canada, having left St Paul's, Kamloops, BC, Canada, a year earlier. Prior to that he was variously at Englehart and area, North Cobalt, Cobalt, and Port Arthur (all in Ontario), and Maple Ridge BC. By 1957/58, he was retired in North Vancouver, BC, Canada. While you should probably send the lookups to me off-list, I'm sending this request on-list on the small chance that someone might be interested that I have my grandfather's personal listing of the baptisms and marriages he performed from 1909 through 1949, all entries usually with dates, places, parents, witnesses and godparents recorded. While the list isn't entirely complete, there are over 3,000 names. I would be pleased to search the list for anyone interested. ........ 1. [Pots] LEIGH/Rev. Samuel LEIGH family interests
    2. Jack Leigh
    3. Hello list. I'm prompted to send you my list of STS Potteries family interests. My grandfather was born in Armitage, STS, and my LEIGH family lived previously at Hanley, Burslem, Stoke, and perhaps Norton in the Moors and Biddulph. Proven STS Potteries family connections include KNOWLES, CLIFFORD, MOORCROFT, HALL, DISSINGTON, VALLANCE, PLIMLEY, HUGHES, PASS, SUTTON and COPELAND. Unproven but possible connections include KEELING, HOLDCROFT, CLEWES/CLOWES, WILLET, PARR, and THORNICROFT/THORNEYCROFT. My grandfather was certain that his gt grandfather was a brother of Rev. Samuel LEIGH, the first Wesleyan Methodist missionary to Australia and New Zealand. I have quite a lot of unpublished genealogical information about Rev. Samuel LEIGH which I would be pleased to share with anyone interested. But I haven't been able to prove a relationship between my family and Rev. Samuel LEIGH, thus the list of unproven connections above. .......
