    2. Margaret Davies
    3. I am a new subscriber posting my surname interests. H.I.Th. IBBS, potter, had a daughter Mary Ellen for whom he made a commemorative loving cup presented to her on her 5th birthday in 1858. I am having trouble finding any info on the birthplace and wife of H.I.Th. IBBS and would be pleased if any of you could help. When Mary Ellen married my Great Grandfather Michael stephen O'BRIEN, fisherman, at the church of Our Lady, St. Nicholas and St. Ann in 1892 they, according to the 1881census for Liverpool Lancs, already had 2 children. Stephen and Mary Ellen , my grandmother. Mary Ellen IBBS father Thomas was at the wedding and is on their marriage certificate. I would be so pleased if you could help me to find out more about him and his connection to the pottery country. Margaret, Australia.

    3. Sue, The workhouse hospital referred to is probably what became the City General Hospital (not sure of the current name as there is now just the combined hospital). I believe that the old workhouse building was in use by the hospital until fairly recent times. The hospital is in Hartshill which is right next to Penkhull. 3. Thanks for the feedback on this. Interestingly, they prompted some memories from my father: After the one first team match for which he was paid 2/6d g-granddad Tom was told by his employer that he couldn't have two paid jobs and so had to choose between being a professional footballer and being a flour merchant. He chose the security of flour and the rest is obscurity! No known connection with Norman Wainwright but gg-grandfather had at least six sons and I've only accounted for two of them post 1901 so may yet unearth something. There certainly seems to be a sporting gene in the line (although it didn't reach me!) Cheers Pat

    3. Thanks Terry, Yes, that certainly sounds like the same Jacob. I haven't done any searching on that line yet (I'm still pursuing elusive Wainwrights) so if you've got there first I'd love to know what you've found. 1. [Pots] Methodist/Nonconformist Churches
    2. I don't know about other denominations but the Methodist Chapels used to be grouped in a Circuit which was at least two chapels. Sometimes the records appear to have comprised the circuit rather than individual Chapels, so this may explain why Longton and Fenton were together, being adjacent. Perhaps there is a Minister who can give an expert opinion? Arnold Bennett talked about "The Five Towns" but there are and were really Six; Longton, Fenton, Stoke, Hanley, Burslem, and Tunstall. I find it confusing having signposts to the City Centre pointing to Hanley! I suppose thats progress, it always was the best for shopping, and is even better now with the redevelopment on the old Shelton bar site
