My brick wall is cracking!! Today I found my CHADWICK family in 1871 Census in Shelton but one of the children listed is said to be born in Haywood STS? Anybody any ideas where it could be? I need to find this family in 1861 Census to knock the wall down. Shirley Web Page: http://www.geocities.com/saelwick/index.htm e-mail: elwick@one-name.org
Alan - How Recent did you go ? Did you see the old pot bank that had be burned down ? Those streets have been like that since the 1960s at least. Are you in Northwood with Keelings Road and The Holly Bush pub in Cardwell street ?? If you are then you need get yourself down to Hanley Library, Floor E and ask Margaret in the Archives for the OS map of Longton c1881 You should also ask her to show you the Gazetteer of 188x - you should be able to see who run what businesses in Greg Street The local Historians for Longton are Ellis Bevan and John Briggs - You might try writing to them - The archives may have an address forb either of them . I don’t know of a society for Longton Steve From up Anley Duck But living in Longton --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). I have recently been to have a look at the present day Gregory Street in Longton and must admit was a little disappointed to find that it is now a "new" street. When looking at the various trade directories for Gregory Street I was amazed at how many businesses and shops existed in the old Gregory Street. Would I be correct in thinking that the old Gregory Street was a much longer street than now exists? My interest with Gregory Street ..........I have two lines of my tree living there in the 1800s. One family have been traced in 1881 to the Farmers Inn (they are described as Beer Sellers and Miners). Does anyone have any info at all about the Farmers Inn? Also could someone please let me know if Longton has a local history/family history society? My families, it seems never travelled too far - all can be located in the Gregory Street area (Heathcote Rd, Ayshford Street) - my mothers side emigrated to Normacot at some point, and then over the next 50 years moved from Furness to Rothesay to Upper Normacot Road - basically hedge hopping!! Hi Thanks for the info. The marriage is registered in the June Qtr and as the census took place on the night of the 2/3 that year I expect they were after the census, well that what I was hoping for anyway. Can anyone help me find my 4th gr grandfather John MELLOR on the 1851 census? This is his household in 1841: CENSUS - 1841 Woodland Street, Tunstall, Staffs - 993/18 - folio 13 John Mellor - 45 - potter - b Staffs Sarah Mellor - 45 - b Staffs Enoch Mellor - 15 - potter - b Staffs Isaac Mellor - 9 - b Staffs His occupation might be listed as bailiff as thats how it appeared on his son Enoch's marriage certificate in 1845. He was listed as "of Mow Cop" in 1845, I don't know if this is near Tunstall, Staffs or not. Sarah must be his second wife as Enoch and Isaac's mother's name was Martha, unless the census taker somehow got it wrong on the 1841. Isaac may still be living with them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.- Cheryl _________________________________________________________________ Share holiday photos without swamping your Inbox.
