Thanks listers for the many replies. I knew I could rely on help from you. It bears out what I had already thought, but didn't realise that Registry office marriages went back so far. (1844 was the date I was interested in.) Thanks again to all. Regards Jean.

Hi Listers, Here is a query someone may be able to answer. What does a "Civil marriage" mean as listed on the staffordshirebmd website marriages? Is it the same as church marriages? TIA. Kind regards Jean.

Jane has looked in 2001, 2002 and 2003 but cannot find any trace of Samuel, or any Filders, so I guess he must have moved on by 1851. As he was married in Stoke in 1855 he might have been there. His future wife was in High Street, Hanley in 1851. Keith Do you have Gordon Beavington's 1851 CD's ?? or the BMSGH ?? Unfortunately I don't have all of STS only 2000 and 2001 from BMSGH. If you have Gordon's set email at gordonb@mycensuses.com, and explain your problem. Perhaps someone else on the list has Series 2002 and could check for Kidsgrove for you. It should be part of Tunstall Parish, but there is often no rhyme or reason when Census Districts were plotted. I have check Whites 1834 Gazeteer of STS and Wwhite places it as a village within Tunstall Parish!! hth Helen Lower Hutt -----Original Message----- From: Keith Hackney [mailto:keith.hackney@xtra.co.nz] Sent: Wednesday, February 04, 2004 4:58 PM To: ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Pots] Kidsgrove Hi Helen, Jane, Many thanks for the references for Kidsgrove, but I am beginning to think that I have been short-changed with my 107/2002 cd. Tunstall has 8 contents sheets with 532 images, Wolstanton has 2 contents sheets, 75 images, and not a mention of Kidsgrove in any. They seem only to cover the named townships! The other major parishes covered in 2002 are Wedgwood and Chell! Hi I'm trying to trace further details of a Sophia Smith Mansell. The information I have so far is that she was born in Newtown, Stafford in 1852. She married a Benjamin James Precious in Sheffield in Aug 1870 and had a number of children, one of whom was my grandmother, Ethel Precious. According to her marriage certificate she was 19 when she got married and her father was an Edward Mansell. I've checked the 1851 Census but no Mansell's are listed. I've tried to trace Sophia's baptism but there is no record on the IGI. Parish registers for Castle Church, St Mary (which I believe was known as New Town in the 1850s), Alstonefield, St Peter, Baswich, Holy Trinity, Bushbury, St Mary and Kinver, St Peter have been checked but with no success. I believe there were other 'New Towns' - Lichfield St Michael, Penkridge, Rowley Regis and West Bromwich. I would appreciate if anyone has any access to these records if they could check for a record of Sophia's birth/baptism or indeed if any! one has any other information on her or her father Edward. One other small clue is that a Jane Mansell was a witness at their wedding, but I'm not sure what the relationship was. Yours hopefully Pamela Tibbs
Hello everyone, Just posting my interests. Any snippets of news would be very welcome. BAILEY; the only lead I have is that in 1915 this family lived in Ricardo St, Dresden, Stoke-on-Trent and that they at some time they gave an home to a young boy. ONIONS; here again the only lead I have is that during the 1950's a Mrs Onions and her daughter lived in Buccleuch Rd, Normacot, Stoke-on-Trent. Regards to all, Geoff.
Hi List, I've just received the obituary notice from Trenton Historical Society for my 3x great uncle James OLIVER who emigrated from the Potteries to Trenton NJ in 1880. I have 3 copies of notices: "He was a prominent member of Jefferson Circle No.7, B. of A." the others use "... B. of W." and "... B. of U." Can anyone tell me what this means? James's father was also James, b.1815 Hanley, bp. 1819, m. Sarah Henshall 1840 - anyone linked? BW Andy.
