    3. Thank you Louise - I will keep collecting all these references until I get the right one - I wonder what he was in prison for? It would be great if it was Bigamy, as this is when he was found out! (His first wife turned up eatrly 1902, complete with 5 children!) 1. Mystery man: John Thomas MINSHULL
    2. Marilyn Moffat
    3. I have been trying to find out about a man who married my great great aunt Annie ROBERTS at West Bromwich in April 1899. He is listed as: John Thomas MINSHULL, age 41, bricklayer, son of Joseph MINSHULL Steerer. Now a steerer is usually a canal boatman and I have revisited the 1881 census to see if this marriage certificate info makes any more sense. I find the following: John Thomas MINSHULL born about 1843 with a wife and 6 children, born Wolstanton, living 1 TramWay Stoke on Trent occupation Mechanical Engineer. There is also a Joseph Minshull age 60 on a boat "Dreadnought" at Wolstanton. This is currently speculation, but they look as though they may fit into my pattern and are worth investigating Does anyone know anything about this family? My problem is that "JT" comes from nowhere marries in 1899 and disappears by 1902. According to his descendents he married "our" Annie illegally and they were forced to annul the marriage. He is also reported to have died in 1902 after the annulment. I am working with JT's grandaughter to try and find out more about her family, as she started out knowing only hearsay on this. Marilyn

    3. I have an indirect link to Methodist GOLDSTRAWs near Leek and Potteries. A Martha Goldstraw was a witness at my great-grandparents wedding in1888 in Endon (between Leek and Stoke). Their names were Isaac EARDLEY and Martha HEATH. I have some information on www.higginsons.org.uk for my family, but not the Goldstraws. And the name of Thomas GOLDSTRAW crops up in some copies of Methodist books of the 19th century, including (IIRC) the copy someone lent me of "Methodism in my Native Village" by Thomas Willshaw. (www.rewlach.org.uk/books) This covers the village of Cheddleton, 3 miles south of Leek, where my gt. g'mother (Martha Heath) grew up. No Goldstraws, but some description of the village. Nor are there any Goldstraws in Dyson's centenary book, "Wesleyan Methodism in the Leek Circuit", though this is useful for general accounts of Early Methodism. Of course, this is all long after the dates you want, but adds a bit of interest to the family name left in England. My gggrandfather came to Hobart, Australia, from Liverpool in 1830, a free immigrant, on the "Juno". We do not have the names of his parents. His grandchildren said that he was born in "Leeds, Staffordshire" which I have assumed to be "Leek, Staffordshire" as there are many Goldstraws in Leek and none in Leeds! He was supposed to be the second youngest son of a family of pottery glazers (well off) consisting of 10 sons and 2 daughters. One brother was Paul who went to America. George was a Methodist and named his sons, born in Tasmania, George, Isaac, John and Samuel and he was supposed to be 28 when he left England, giving a birthdate of around 1799-1801. 2. Hi Lilian I am interested in any HODSONs in Stone area, mainly because if I discount 95% of them, the remaining 5% may be mine! I have nearly a hundred HODSONs listed mostly from the early 1800s, particular interest in John HODSON (Gx3) marrying Elizabeth FINNEY 9 Sep 1832 at Fulford. The FINNEYs a bit more vague, again interested in any FINNEYs in Stone 1840s or Trentham / Caverswall area 1760 John FINNEY (Gx5) marrying Jane HASSELL. My tree can be seen on Rootsweb of Gencircles. (Bit out of date though). Hope either of us can help either of us! Peter Wayman in Biddulph. MOULSON (Stone 1850 > Salop), WEAVAL/WEAWALL (Stone 1780), HODSON (Stone 1780), HASSALL (Stone 1780)

Emma BENNETT - their son was George b.1851. We think he married twice, m2. Hannah Bourne 1886. I'd be delighted to share more info with you or other listers. BW Andy.
