Hi Jeffery The county of Salop is actually Shropshire. This is a county on the border of Wales and England. Hopes this helps. Jackie J -----Original Message----- From: Jeffery K. Garth, I had a similar problem. I found my ancestor in Endon and his parents in Cheddleton. Endon is a chapelry of Leek. It appears that our ancestors might give the general area of their birth as Leek but were baptised in a chapelry of Leek. I used the publication "Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service, Guide to Sources, No.1- Parish Registers and Bishops' Transcripts" to locate the chapelrys.. If you want a list of chapelrys of Leek please let me know. Hope this helps. The Hughes Collection website has gone live: http://www.thehughescollection.co.uk/index.html All 2,000 odd photos are online. There is a search engine that takes a broad description of the content, try typing "bicycle" or "football". Double click on an image and not only do you get a larger image, but you can either supply or request information. A few hundred of the iamges have a clients name on them. Try typing "GILES", or try your own Bromsgrovian name. Good Hunting Mike Yegwart Bromsgrove Branch Chairman BMSGH
Garth A lot of men joined up in the army in those days to get away from something - having fathered a child whose mother they did not wish to marry, some sort of crime, etc. and gave a false place of birth, age, name, etc. My ggg grandfather did all these three things on his army record. Happily for me, he told the truth about his age and birthplace to the 1851 Census enumerator and I was able to track him down eventually. I am searching for the birth of Joseph Holtham c 1766 in Leek. His Staffordshire Militia records say he was born there but I can't find any reference in St Edwards Parish registers. I would love to know who his parents were. Can anyone make any suggestions as to where to look next? He married his first wife Catherine Gibson in 1803 but I don't connect with any children until 1812. Could he have been away with the Militia and his wife was left at home. In total he had 14 children from his two marriages. The second wife was Margaret Hawley.
Sorry about the email, it should have read George Birks, widow, potter, married 26 July 1828, Stoke Upon Trent, to Ann Turner, spinster is anyone looking for this family? Jackie!
Jackie - you must know more ! Such as what year(s) are we talking about ? 1700s, 1800s or 1900s ? What, if any, census' do you have him / her in ? Where did his marriage take place and when ? When the marriage took place was Ann Turner a spinster or a widow ? So you can see you do have a lot more info. Birks and Turner are extremely common names -especially in the Fenton/Longton area . I have an interest in BIRKS, and there is a Geo who married an Ann 1871 RG10 - 2877 110 Stafford Street (Shakespear Inn) George Birks Head Marrie 56 Inn keeper Derby Ann (wife) 53 Ilkeston William 19 Ilkeston Charles 15 Ilkeston Albert 12 Longton Sarah A 11 Longton Sarah Jane Carnall GD 2 Longton Steve -----Original Message----- From: JcqlnKlly@aol.com [mailto:JcqlnKlly@aol.com] Sent: 08 April 2005 14:02 To: ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Pots] Birks Hi! This is my first post to the list. I am hoping to make a connection to anyone researching the Mellor and Mollart families of the Wolstanton area of Staffordshire. The families lived in Packmoor, Mow Cop, Brieryhurst, Biddulph areas. We have been told that the Mellor family owned farm lands in Wolstanton, which would become the town of Packmoor. If anyone is connected or knows anything about the Mellor/Mollart families I would be very appreciative of any help with this family. Ruth Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Hello To all, Can anyone please help me? I am trying to locate the parents of Ralph Goodfellow born about 1822 in or around Wolstanton. In 1842 he married Athaliah Holland and they had at least one son Joseph. I have traced amny Goodfellows in the area but cannot trace this Ralph. All information I have of him come from V.R. listing for the marriage of Joseph and IGI entry for Josephs birth.
