I am searching for any descendants of the Marriage of a Lewis Heath, born in Wolstanton in c 1837,and a Mary Conway, born in Flint Flintshire,in c 1848.Their Marriage took place in 1865-1868,I don't know where,as the Marriaage is not featured on Staffordshire BMD. Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham.
Hi Ruth, Pleased to have been of assistance!! Best wishes with your further research, Keith
Keith, Once again, thank you so much. I had not gotten as far as the Marriage Indexes yet, but these look very very good. I followed the Biddulph sisters and found them in the 1871 census and sure enough the mother is Mary and the father was William Biddulph.....I also found a reference in the Civil registration of Ashton Under Lyme 1859 marriage of Mary Beech and William Biddulph....I think that clears up who she was. I also followed them back to the 1861 and found Mary and William Biddulph....no children yet. I think I had the marriages mixed up...thinking he married the Sarah first, then the Biddulph....when it appears it was the other way round. His first wife Emma dies 1873......he must marry Mary(Beech) Biddulph(widow) in 1874 ( didn't look for her death yet), but he obviously marries Sarah in 1878.....I can't figure out if one of these names is Sarah's maiden name or both are married names.... I took the daughter Jane Pitwell and tried a census search...I found Jane Pitwell age 6 (which would fit the 16 year old Jane of 1881)....anyway would you believe that young Jane is listed as granddaughter......the family is Edward and Jane Hawkins of Buckinghamshire....the grandparents are 72 and 71...this could indicate that Hawkins was Sarah's maiden name......oh the complications. Once again, thank you so much for your assistance.....it has definitely helped me prove that this is the family I am looking for. Hello, I recently noticed that there seems to be a marriage index for STAFFORDSHIRE! Would this include pre 1837 years? Thanks John Eaton socon
Hi Keith, The 1881 - reference is RG11 3535 page 10 Biddulph St Lawrence #41 on the page....Onions...Blk Bull Railway Hotel. the daughters are 17,15,14.. all very close in age to the other two. In 1871 ( I think the same family....RG10 2845 page 32 family # 154 he is listed as Edwin Onions...wife Emma, son Samuel ( my direct connection), daughter Mary. In 1891 I found them on RG12 2158 Folio 43, page 23 family #132 Edwin is listed as Beerhouse keeper...he is a widower...my Samuel is now back and he and his family are living with Edwin. What is so confusing about this...is I'm not sure I have the right family in 1881, but everything else fits. In the BMD register I found and Emma Onions who died in 1873 and a Sarah Onions who dies 1891. So it could be possible. Thanks for all your help. ----- Original Message ----- From: Keith Hackney<mailto:keith.hackney@xtra.co.nz> To: ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 14, 2005 9:52 PM Subject: Re: [Pots] Brindley Ford and Biddulph - Onions Surname Hi again Ruth, Jane Pitwell is definitely Sarah's daughter as they came from the same place. Hi, I'm new to this list and wondered if anyone had access to the 1891 census and would be prepared to do a look-up for me? I'm trying to find William and Jane Smith. In 1881 they were 24 and 21 years respectively and lived at 51, Newcastle St, Burslem. William was a butcher and was born in Hanley, Jane was born in Burslem. I cannot find them on the 1901 and thought the 1891 might give me a clue! Jane was the sister of my great grandmother and it was only last week that I found out Jane's married name, so I'm keen to trace her. (Pity she married a Smith!) Any help very gratefully received, thanks in advance. Debbie

Thanks Keith for the quick response......This sure looks good...what does not make sense to me is the other step-daughters named Biddulph. I followed one of the daughters to the 1871 census and her father was a William Biddulph and the wife was Mary.......all from Biddulph.............now he is married to a Sarah..and it does seem that Jane Pitwell must be yet another step-daughter. I wonder if he married once again for the 3rd time to this Sarah. I have tracked this Edwin and his first wife was Emma???...they had a child Edwin and Mary...so this Mary listed here is definitely his daughter. I note that the census acutally lists the wife as the Beer Seller....I wonder could she have actually owned the Hotel and have been the step-parent to the Biddulph girls. Oh....this is so confusing..... Thanks for this info......much appreciated. ----- Original Message ----- From: Keith Hackney<mailto:keith.hackney@xtra.co.nz> To: ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 14, 2005 9:30 PM Subject: Re: [Pots] Brindley Ford and Biddulph - Onions Surname Amy, Might this be your Onions family?? I have recently found out that my ancestor...named Onions was the owner or proprietor of .....The Black Bull Railway Hotel in Biddulph and also apparently owned or operated the Brindley Ford Beer House. Can any tell me anything about these places? Or where might I find out something about them? The 1881 census showing the Blk Bull Hotel list "Onions" as the head...but a note which says....head of family sleeping at his other house in Brindley Ford"...listed on the census are 3 stepdaughters whose last name is "Biddulph" I would love to be able to put the correct first name to this Onions ancestor and find out about his Biddulph step children etc. Any suggetions or help would be appreciated. Hi Barbara, I too have Nixons and variations in my tree, in fact two lines which came together and married in Rushton Spencer in about 1707. One line was from Macclesfield, (1660), the other from Rushton Spencer, (1500). They ended up in Tunstall and Chell. Regards, Keith
He made Marble look alikes in pottery. This didn’t just mean "busts" - it could have been anything in imitation marble. Children didn’t have marbles as such - and they wouldn’t have been made of glass in the potteries - in the 1950s kilnmen used to take waste clay and roll it into balls and put them in the kilns to make "alleys" for their kids. I had loads of these and only when we became "rich" did I get "glass alleys".
