    1. William Hackney: Lookup required please.
    2. Keith Hackney
    3. Hi Listers, I am hoping that someone could kindly do a lookup for me in the 1861 census, and possibly 1851. My gg grandfateher was William Hackney, and he is my brick wall. His wife and family appear in the 1861, and 1871 censuses, but William is only at home in 1871 at 26 Oxford Street, Hanley, just after their 5th child was born. In 1861 his wife and first two children were at Audley Street, Tunstall. He could well be lodging somewhere in 1861, and maybe with parents or lodging in 1851. He and Mary Ann Webb were married in the Chapel of St Paul, Burslem, on 6 December 1852, he full age, she 19. Their place of residence shown as Long Port. William's father was William, labourer, deceased. William jnr was a blacksmith, and was throughout his life. In the 1871 census blacksmith William claims to be 38, born in Astbury. He died on 5th December 1878, at Union Street, Burslem, away from home, and was buried on 6th at St John's Church, Burslem. Thank you for reading this, it has been posted on Pots, STS, and CHS lists, as all might apply. Thank you also for any help. Keith

    3. Longport is close to Middleport and Newport; they are sub districts of Burslem, the mother-town of the potteries. St Paul's church used to stand at the top of Newport St. Burslem. ----- Original Message ----- From: "john richardson" <jjminfiek@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 22, 2005 8:16 AM Subject: Re: [Pots] William Hackney: Lookup required please. > Hello, > > Astbury is in Cheshire! 3. All - Longport is very much a place - both old and current. I take it most of the people talking on this subject are not British and therefore don’t know the Potteries environment. I strongly suggest the use of www.streetmap.co.uk for the look up of names. Try inputting LONGPORT as a GB place and you are presented with two options Longport - City of Stoke on Trent Longport Station - Stoke on Trent Click either as they are the same place. Zoom in and you will find that Longport is to the west of Burslem and close to St Paul's church, which is in Middleport. If you follow the canal from Longport Northwards you will eventually come to Astbury. The interchange of people between Staffordshire and Cheshire has always happened and continues to this day.
